Anything impress you anymore?

Archive: 8 posts

I think this thread is appropriate, given how late we are in LBP2's lifespan.

Back in the early days, I was shocked and amazed at every bit of logic. I'm pretty sure we were all stumped out how complex everything, even the simplest thing, was. Look at some of the Mm picks of early 2011. Onmicron and Galactic Base Defense were the pinnacles of logic, LittleBigPrius was a stunning platformer, Back to the Future should have won an Oscar.

Now, with all the tools being mastered by just about everyone, those just seem tame. Logic I used be dazzled by I now have complete understanding of. Visuals I thought we the end-all-be-all back then are almost ugly now. As the bar was raised again and again levels once good became bad, and levels once great just became good. You could say we've become jaded, I think it's just we've become more familiar with the game.

That said, what still impresses you? After all these years, is there something released at least a year ago that still blows your mind to this day, that you simply can't figure out? For me, it's this level:

I still cannot figure out how he did the AI. It's enough to make checkers, but with a computer that's actually competent is a near-Herculean logical feat. Even if I, who can "see" the logic in nearly all the levels I play, had to make something like it I wouldn't even know where to start.

So, what still impresses you? What got put out that still blows your mind, back in the day, to this day?

He must be a darn good chess player lol I can understand the programming--and it would some great logic choice to make difficult AI. This level is very impressive still. One level I am still impressed with is Sealed Fate by Felkroth. In fact, LBP has been less fun since she left because I don't think anyone else made any memorable RPGs sense then( if you did find one let me know!).

Sealed Fate is the first "real" RPG in LBP2 and its fun. Logically I know how it was designed, but thats why its impressive. One of these days I will finish Sealed Fate--I really hope she comes back again though. Her Frozen Flame series was great as well.

Another level I was just shocked by was the batman animation movie that was MM picked( I forget the name). I think impressive levels now are really about using the tools we mastered and creating even more brilliant creations. In other words its now more about creating a better experience, than new technical advances. Of course, until LBP3 debuts.

I too was very impressed by this. After making my own Checkers level, the amount of logic that went into it was insane. And this was just for player vs player. I did include a complulsory capturing rule (I rule I've always played in draughts/checkers), which he didn't include if I recall, but the AI more than made up for that. Given that I was very much of a logic noob when I made my Checkers level, I think I did alright. It was laggy as hell, but it worked.

I'm impressed by creativity more than anything else. As long as the LBP community makes creative stuff, I'll continue to be impressed. Given how much great stuff has already been published, a truly creative level impresses me more than it would of two years ago.2013-12-09 18:45:00

This. As someone who has never created anything, I never "see" the logic in a level and I can't even tell a lot of the time how impressive the logic needs to be to produce a particular effect. So I end up being impressed quite simply by imagination, creativity, what you will. And it is still possible for levels to impress in that way. Mnniska's recent 24 hour create level (http://lbp.me/v/qpcjtf4) proves that beyond a doubt. I'm guessing the logic used to create it was nothing ground-breaking but the raw creativity in what he does with the logic just shines through. That level was clever, the gameplay design was fantastic and it was just sooo much fun to play!

Still can't wait for LBP3 though...

Logic doesn't really impress me anymore, because I know I could figure out how to do almost anything (it probably won't be the best way, but it'll work). What really impresses me is the artistic skill of some creators. I like when I play a level and it feels like I'm not playing LBP anymore. Some of the Japanese creators are incredible (Ajisagi, Rio_Lotta, etc).2013-12-09 19:50:00

I'm always impressed with levels that manage to feel original and fun, without the logic getting in the way. This is not easy, since many creators get so lost in the technical details that they lose the fun.

The mutant mudds levels are a great example. I think adel22 does this better than just about anybody. Or sneakysteves levels. Great stuff.

Sealed fate. The best level that will ever be made in LBP2 as far as I'm concerned. It is it's own RPG in every way - gameplay, looks, story. The absolute epitome of what a great level should be.

Avalore. Probably the second best level series after sealed fate, genius puzzles and gameplay and perhaps the best visuals of any levels ever made.

What depresses me is that my second MM pick, dungeon break is a good level, one I'm quite proud of-- but it's nowhere near these. Yet it has about 7,000 plays more than either.
