What Are You Learning This School Year?

Archive: 15 posts

I know, I know, school, ew. I hope I'm not the only one who is interested in how other people from different countries learn & what they learn. I don't know why but I was so intrigued when by friend who lived in the Uk started talking about their school system. I was so baffled when he said that most kids enter college at the age of 16. Well let me get things started.
I live in the United Sates, more specifically in Illinois. Our public school system consists of 12 years in school & college, which is optional.
The first 6 years are your elementary school years, the next two years (7th 7 8th) are your middle school years, & the remaining 4 years (9th-12th) are your high school years. In high school, there is specific name title for each of your year. 9th being your freshman year, 10th being your sophomore year, 11th being your junior year, & 12th being your senior year. At the start of your freshman year you have to pick between either being in a P.E. class or JROTC. If you take P.E. you have to swim your first year. JROTC is sorta like a military program except it doesn't send you to the military. My friend explained it as a way to improve your leadership skills.
The classes I'm taking at the moment are: English 1, Computer Science, Biology, P.E., Spanish Beginners, World Studies, & Algebra 2.
What I'm learning in each class:
English: we're reading the poem "5th grade autobiography" & analyzing it to our life. i think the unit we are starting is about how object from our past affect us.
Computer Science: we're learning about html codes & how to create a website.
Biology: The Cell Structure.
P.E.: Lol, idk, that's my sleeping period
Spanish: Latin dances & music, we are suppose to pick a type of dance & dance in front of the class on Monday. >->
World Studies: Causes of WW1
Algebra 2: http://0.tqn.com/d/create/1/0/i/9/9/-/Quadratic.formula.jpg

So, what are you currently learning? If you're not in school then what were your hopes/dreams after school? (Not after school, but when you finished school) xD

Well, I'm in college, and this semester I learned I do not want to be a teacher. Ew.

And otherwise... I learned...

How to...

...

...

I got no punchline.

I still find the notion of you having a non-disney princess girlfriend that hard a pill to swallow.

Anyway, on topic:

I'm from the UK (Scotland to be precise) and 16 year olds that go to college... Well... College in Britain isnt what it is in America- College is the equivalent of Community college. I am 15, I am still in High school (11th year of education if that helps (Just known as 4th Year here xD ) ) And next year I will be staying on to do my Highers (A- levels)- without my highers (A-Levels) A lot of the University courses I would be interested in I wouldn't be able to do. I want to do medicine so next year I would have to achieve 5 A's at A-Level in that year.

Anyway what am I learning in school right now? Nothing xD We are doing revision throughout all of our subjects as we have Preliminary Exams- ie Practice exams for the ones we will do next year that will determine whether I can do Higher (A-Level) or repeat National 5 (... I guess you could say its the level before A-Level) in that subject.

The Subjects I am studying this year all at National 5 Level (Before A-Level) are, Maths, English, German, Geography, Computing Science, Biology, Physics and Chemistry.

In Maths we have used the Quadratic formula, I much prefer it to factorising as factorising can be very tedious- so we have gone over Quadratic functions, parabolas and such, doing 2D and 3D Vectors and Circle equations, Triangles, trig graphs, line equations- as well as statistical analysis such as Standard Deviation. Anything below that level is pretty much easy... In fact I find all those things in maths easy xD

English... We have read, "To Kill a Mocking Bird", and "Of Mice and Men" and have been told to read some books of our own choice in great detail so we have a variety of choice for the exam- the Critical Essay part (Which you choose what you want to write about from the options they give you- Majority of the time it ends up being a huge Book analysis, or poetry or Tv Show... Or *Shudder* Shakespeare). We have also looked at Edwin Morgan Poems and analysed them to great detail.

German... Es ist sehr schlect, ich finde es schwierig.

Geography we have been learning about Farming, in developing and developed countries, Tourism in those areas, looking at ordinance map surveying, looked at far too many map work in my eyes (Infact today I had my prelim for Geography and I only finished with 5 Minutes to spare- but that wasnt even enough to check through my answers- I just checked I answered all the questions xD Far too much to write ) We have looked at Physical features such as Coastal landscapes- weather system, Glacial upland and lowland features, land use conflicts- and soon we will be going to further detail with Rivers and Valleys and maybe limestone (FUN!) but sooner to the end of our last term before the exam we will look at Environmental Hazards so wont be too bad.

Computing our teachers are very bad at their job, not meaning to boast but I often help majority of the pupils in my class better than the teachers do. We have looked at programming (Mainly Microsoft Visual basic), looked at Information systems such as databases, looked at Computer architecture, hardware and software, looked at website creation using HTML, looked at trialing programs... and My favourite!! The Ergonomics of Computing in the workplace and legal laws and issues ._.

Biology we have looked at cells, including Genetic engineering, Stem cells, Bio remedation, uses of cell with in the body, cell types, what makes up a cell, DNA, Protein Synthesis, Enzymes, Photosynthesis and Respiration- as well as Cancer. We have also covered Multicellular organisms, transport in plants and animals, different systems around the body, inheritance, reproduction, that sort of thing. We have just started life on Earth- thats adaptation and that sort of thing, putting it vaguely.

Physics my most confident subject- We have covered, Dynamics and space; Which includes, Newtons laws of Motion, forces, gravity, velocity and speed equations, speed/time graphs, terminal velocity, resistance, stars, spectroscopy, red shift, star systems, exo-planets and space exploration, Vector and Scalar quantities,Satellites and thats it in that Unit. In Unit 2 (Wave Parameters and Radiation) covers, Sound waves, properties of a Wave, frequency, wavelength, Electro Magnetic spectrum, Light (Reflection, diffraction), Uses of the EM Spectrum, radioactive particles (Alpha, Beta and Gamma), radioactive Activity and half life of sources. We have touched on Unit 3 which is mainly electronics but very little and wont go back to it until next February.

Chemistry we have covered Atomic structure, Rates of reaction, the periodic table, Mass = GFMxNumber of Moles and Number of Moles=ConcentrationXVolume and proportion equations, isotopes, ions, bonding, Acids and bases, Hydrocarbons and fuels, Alcohols, carboxylic acids, and enthalpy equations, consumer products using Hydrocarbons and carbohydrates... and thats it I think xD we still have more radioactive chemistry to to (My favourite!!).

So thats my school year summed up for you xD If you are interested in what Scottish Education is like go to the SQA website and look at National 5 Subjects- click on them, and find the Syllabus (Tells you what we will cover) and look at specimen Paper (What the final exam will be modelled around) http://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/41276.html

You get classes on all of that?? U.S education system blows..or at least where I live it does
All of the teachers were the sit-in-the-back-of-the-class-and-text kind and there were no computer classes past the "This is how you open office/word, this is how you set the text to one side, blahblahblah things you learned when you were 5 blahblahblah"
and all of the computers were from the 90's using old versions of windows because the school couldn't afford anything newer (even though it was late 2000's)

And I thought our computing classes are bad xD Here we do use the computers a lot and that seems to be the problem- because people arent taking in the theory- the thing we need for the exam. When we got given our revision notes for the year- that covers everything that we will cover in the year, people got so confused it was unreal- it doesnt help that we got them 2 weeks before a prelim and were told to memorise it. Computing can be a skive here, but if you do you just wont pass the exam in all honesty, I always get the practical stuff on the computers done very quickly so the teacher has to get me some theory to do so I am actually learning something useful. And the computers... Our ones are probably newer than that, but the set up in our classroom is like a sweatshop for nerds... Well it's what it feel like xD

Nice thread, it's good know what's happening across the Atlantic (and across the English channel). I had no idea about those P.E and JROTC thingies in the US, that sounds pretty crazy!

Things are slightly different in France. The school system works as follows:

→ Elementary school from 6 to 11 years old.
→ Secondary/middle school from 11 to 14.
→ High school from 14 to 17.

Unlike in North America (where classes start from grade 1 up to grade 12), the numbers go backwards in France. So, the first middle school year is called Sixi?me ("Sixth"), and then you've got Cinqui?me ("Fifth"), Quatri?me ("Fourth"), and Troisi?me ("Third"). Then first high school year is called Seconde, and then comes Premi?re, and the final year is called Terminale.

In my final year of high school, I had classes of:

→ Math (Sequences, complex numbers, functions, vectors, integral, etc.)
→ Physics and chemistry (Waves, spectrum, dynamics, mechanics, forces, molecular geometry, organic chemistry, etc. All this was terrible).
→ Biology (Genetics, evolution, immune system, plants, neurons, nervous system, etc.)
→ French (essays about different themes: reasoning, poetry, novels, plays)
→ English [2nd language] (essays about different notions: Myhths and Heroes, Progress, Forms of Power, Locations and Exchanges)
→ Spanish or Italian or German [3rd language].
→ Philosophy (too complicated to explain!)
→ History & Geography (European Union, WW1, WW2, Vietnam War, Cold War, etc).
→ and Sport (athletics, "bodybuilding", rock climbing, basketball).

Now I'm 18 and I'm in Economic College (but I also take law and math classes). It's pretty awesome! The college/university looks great, my teachers are badass, and there's about 40% of foreign students in the city. It's pretty cool to get to talk to American, British, Canadian, Australian, Chinese, Korean, or Russian people.

I'm from Ohio, so my schooling follows the general American system of education. Currently I'm a senior in high-school, (Grade 12) and will be starting college next year. Being a higher level student, my courses consist primarily of first year college material? theses classes are our "AP" classes.
My classes this year are:
AP Physics B - a broad overview of physics topics and one of the hardest courses you can take around here.
AP English Language and Composition - rhetoric, argumentative strategy, etc.
AP Psychology - Memory, psychotics perspectives, learning, etc.
AP United States Government - basically covers every aspect of how the US government works.
Honors Precalculus - An absolutely terrible class that should not even exist because it's just a review. Even bigger waste of my time when I already know mathematics through calculus 1.
Speech and Debate - just a fun class in which students give speeches on various topics.

And there's my schedule. Some would say it's difficult but it's really not that bad. I'm looking to study chemical engineering in college, and that is going to be a whole lot tougher.
