The World's End

Archive: 3 posts

Edgar Wright's, Simon Pegg's and Nick Frost's latest installment to the "Cornetto trilogy" (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and now, the World's End) is arguably one of the best movies of this year so far. Certainly in my top ten of the year and easily the best comedy of the year, though there has been little competition. The actors are all amazing, Simon Pegg giving his second best performance ever (after Shaun from Shaun of the Dead) and Nick Frost giving us yet another character, that would fail and be annoying if it was handled by any less capable actor.

The story is also very deep. No doubt is it fun, but it's also much more than would first meet the eye. As most of you have probably seen the trailer already, I am sure you know what is going to be in the movie, but for the record there's much more to it than that. The sci-fi elements in the movie blend perfectly with the original story-arc and, in the style of the rest of the trilogy, the story builds up constantly, without giving filler. Everything is connected in the movie as well and even the minor details have an effect on something later on. None of the characters the main characters meet once they reach the place of main action is irrelevant and mostly everyone is seen more than once in the movie.

The humour is also boss as heck. I have not laughed more in any movie this year. While it may not be as funny as Hot Fuzz was or not as emotionally draining as the Shaun of the Dead, it's easily the most well-made movie Edgar Wright has ever directed (which is a lot, since Edgar Wright constantly produces gold with movies out of the trilogy as well, such as Sightseers, Attack the Block and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World). I find myself entitled to say that this movie is the second best this year and while it may not be a classic such as Shaun of the Dead was, it is, without a shadow of a doubt, a near-perfect movie.

The World's End gets, from me, 10/10.

Now, have you guys seen the movie? If so, what did you think of it and if not, then do you plan to?

Oh, yeah, my top 10 of the year so far, if anyone's interested:

10.) Man of Steel
9.) Gravity
8.) Monsters University
7.) Thor: The Dark World
6.) Prisoners
5.) Oz the Great and Powerful
4.) Iron Man 3
3.) Elysium
2.) The World's End
1.) Pacific Rim

What's with the blue text? All the movies in blue text are sci-fi, which is easily my favourite genre of entertainment. Movies yet to come that I am looking forward to are "Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor" (it's a TV movie and also screens in cinema) and "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug", which I hope follows the quality of its predecessor, because if it does, it will rank a high spot on my top 10 list. I am also very glad more and more unique and actually good movies are making a lot of money, such as "Pacific Rim" and "Thor: The Dark World", while poorly written, poorly directed movies such as "Star Trek Into Darkness" have barely made any more than what their budget was and soulless, borderline insulting cash-ins such as "Lone Ranger" have bombed majestically. It now seems that after the horrible, horrible Twilight Saga is over, people are actually beginning to care more about quality than what the actors look like.

I liked The World's End. Maybe more than SOTD and Hot Fuzz. It'd be nice to see the trilogy extended with some more films but I'm not sure if they'd be as good.

But yeah. Good film. Lots of beer, which is always a good thing.

As a fan of the first two, I, for the life of me, don't know why I've made no effort to see the last one. Maybe I'm not as committed as I thought.2013-11-22 14:03:00
