emergency room stories.

Archive: 21 posts

Today I went to the doctor thinking I had a kidney infection, expecting a prescription of antibiotics. Imagine my surprise when he says, "I urge you to get to the emergency room, because the tests I think you need this late on a Friday can't be done here and you shouldn't put it off."

Well, poop...

So here I sit getting poked, prodded and asked a lot of questions that sort of look like one thing but may be another. I guess the attending physician is looking at my x-rays, because I've been left alone about a half hour now. The latest news is either "inflamed liver" or gallstones...

I guess this means if I need gallbladder surgery, I won't see work again until December some time.

So I was wondering if you guys could share your emergency room stories here to help pass the time.

Here, I can offer one,

I wasn't there for myself, haven't had that yet, but my mom wasn't doing too great. She was having a boatload of pain and since she already has a chronic pain condition, it was worse. It also made it harder to identify what was from the chronic pain and what was new. We ended up having to go to the ER and it took a while for them to sort things out. That time was mostly worry and communicating with extended family about how little we knew about what was going on at the time. Fortunately, it turned out to be a late case of appendicitis that they caught on time. I remember when I found out thinking how simple that was compared to all the stuff I was imagining it could be. So, surgery, a bit of a hospital stay, and it turned out ok in the end.

Well, there it is. Not much, and it didn't start with once upon a time, but it did have a happy ending.

Hope it turns our ok Randal.

Good news and bad news,

The good news is they don't think I need gall surgery, the bad news is my pain and pressure are because my left lung has a bunch of fluid in it so now I need a CT scan....

Double poop...

Haha, I have a story about why I'm never going to the hospital closest to my house anymore. I don't feel like describing my whole hospital journey since I was in the crap hospital for over a week and then I transferred to a Children's Hospital and stayed there for about three weeks, so I'll just tell the story about when I was in the emergency room of the crap hospital.

There's a bit to say about what lead up to me going to the hospital the first time, but I'll just skip that and say I ended up waking up one day feeling extremely ill, I had a massive headache, and any movement to my intestines area hurt like.. well, I bet worse than women's period pains. So, me and my dad made it to the hospital and once I was on a bed thing they gave me some magical shot that within a minute got rid of my massive headache. After a bit of a wait they decided to give me an IV. I've never had an IV in before that. This lady came over and warned me it would hurt and it wouldn't last very long and then picked the spot to put it in. My arms are the skinniest things ever, and she picked this spot on my right arm near my wrist where there's basically nothing but skin and bone with a smallish vein in between. Then she tried to put it in and I would have to say that she literally spent about two minutes digging around with the needle before deciding that it won't work there. That was the worst pain I have ever experienced with needles ever, and I've been prodded with needles hundreds of times over the past few years. Actually worse than all of the other times with needles times ten. It gave me serious trust issues with the second time they tried to put an IV in again.

Luckily, the second one went in without any issues. They picked the inside area of my elbow where there's lots of muscle and a great vein for an IV. Then not much happened until I got a room, and ended up staying there for a while.

So.. yeah.. that's that..

First off, hope you are ok!!

I do have an ER story to share that you might find funny. I went in to the ER complaining of chest pains, but thankfully just turned out to be horrible indigestion. Anyway... while I was lying on the bed awaiting test results and such, we decided to turn on the tv. The channel that came up was simply soothing music and pretty sunsets and the like. After about a minute of this, I looked over at April and said "What the hell kind of place did you bring me too!!!??" ...as I was reminded of the scene in Solyant Green where Sol checked himself into the Home, the place where you go to die all while watching pretty scenery and soothing music.

Ahh well, at least April knew what I meant and started laughing. We kept the whole place amused until we left.

I worked in medical records for a few years. I have a number of stories about ER/A+E, mostly from chatting with security.

The least morbid story that comes to mind is of an elderly patient who went missing from A+E, only to be found when a secretary's office reported that a gentlemen was "waving his thing" at them through the window.

The more morbid stories relate to how patients injure themselves or each other, attacks on staff, vandalism and theft.

Fortunately I've only been to A+E once, when I had one of my rare seizures. Being privy to the state of disarray likely present in most hospitals I wouldn't choose to go unless there really wasn't any other choice.

I hope you are okay <3 I'm sure the hospital staff are all trying to help you as best they can, and I hope you get well soon.
My only ER story is when, at age 7, I really wanted to try wine at the supermarket, so I stood on my wheeled pushchair to grab it and well... I snapped my chin in half >.>

They appear to be treating me as a pneumonia case, so that is very good news, since nobody has officially said what it is. They made a sonogram of my heart and the cardiologist hasn't been knocking at my door, which is good.

They stuck a needle in my back and took out some of the fluid around my lung, so now I am breathing a bit better.

I still haven't been eating solids even though they say I can. I guess it doesn't help that I actually like the flavor of chicken broth.

I have been x-rayed, cat-scanned, echo-sonogrammed(heart), sonogammed and poked (drained), x-rayed again, All amongst daily (sometimes more) blood draws, pee samples, inquearies to stool color, pumped up with two kinds of antibiotics, blood pressure taken at least fifty times, including every two minutes during the fluid drain.

it has been SOME weekend, I tell you.

though it sure beats the week I had.

You don't know the half of it. All weekend I was left to ponder that three types of ailment get my symptoms... malignant cancer, congestive heart failure or severe pneumonia. Meaning I had to have testing for all three, not really knowing which one I had.

Yesterday afternoon, I was overcome with relief when they confirmed it was pneumonia. I still need hospital help including infection removing surgery, but I will take those over two terminal illnesses any day.

Now today... If I can just get some rest...

All I got is when I had bone sticking through the top half of my mouth and I had to go under to get rid of it... It was like a tooth in the middle of my mouth. It was cool, though, I got Dairy Queen after. ... Yeah, I really don't got much.

Sorry about your bad news. Hope it goes well.

Pneumonia is awful, though much better than the other two!!! I had pneumonia a few years ago and took seemingly forever to get rid of. Tons of bed rest was all I could do along with the zillion meds prescribed to me.

Good luck and hope you get better asap!!!

Ah, well, I guess the best emergency room story was when I was coming back from school when I was a little toddler. About three hundred meters had passed from my one kilometer journey from school to home, when I suddenly felt this stinging pain in my stomach. I felt I needed to got to the emergency room. I tried to run to home, but the pain only got larger. I knew something bad was going to happen and I simply didn't have time to wait until home. I also didn't have a mobile back then, so I there was no way I was going to get a lift, nor was there anyone around! If it wasn't for the fact that majority of Finland is forest, I am sure I wouldn't have found a replacement for an emergency room as soon as I did! I am just glad it all ended well.2013-11-20 15:20:00
