Ranch Dressing

Archive: 44 posts

Is it true that people outside the USA don't really know what ranch dressing is? It's a staple food here in the US. It goes with a lot of meals and it is VERY popular here.

I have heard of it, mainly due to over exposure to US culture - TV/film etc. Don't know what it is though. Is it kinda like mayonnaise?

It's the same with a lot of US food that we don't get over here. Only fairly recently (well... over a year ago) I tried my first Twinkie. My God it was so sweet and sickly! I can't believe anyone could eat more than 1 at a time!

I'm not sure. I just typed in "what is ra..." into several European Google sites (in their languages) and "what is ranch dressing" was the top search for a majority of them. Didn't really work for the Asian sites, though. Another case closed through the contribution of masterful detective work.

I've seen ranch outside of America, though.
It is kinda like mayonnaise, I guess. You just pour it all over your vegetables so they're not as disgusting. "Ranch dressing is a type of condiment made of some combination of buttermilk, salt, garlic, onion, herbs (commonly chives, parsley, and dill), and spices (commonly black pepper, paprika, and ground mustard seed), mixed into a sauce" according to the internet. Goes nicely with salads.

Is pretty good.

Is it a bit like Salad Cream? (Don't know if you get that in the States)

Here in Texas it's pretty much the law. Ranch on just about everything or either on the side to dip everything into.2013-11-11 12:54:00

I've never heard of it before, but I guess it tastes pretty much like French dressing? (or rather vinaigrette).

http://www.mygermanmarket.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/370x288/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/k/n/knorr_salatkr_nung_dressing_french_235ml.jpg

I guess each country has its own salad dressing (Ranch dressing, French dressing, Italian dressing,...). But it seems like Ranch dressing is also used on pizzas, French fries, hamburgers, chicken, etc. so it's probably much more popular than any other salad dressing.

Here our French dressing is red and kinda tangy. What the heck is that stuff? lol

I am not a big fan of Ranch Dressing, neither the clothes (up above) or the stuff in the bottle. It is ok with dipping raw vegetables in I suppose, but still not a huge fan of it.

You mean Ranch Dressing is only in the land of FREEDOM?!

FREEDOM!

Of course, I don't really like Ranch Dressing, it's pretty disgusting...

But I'm allowed to think that.

It is nothing like a vinaigrette. I am kind of off ranch lately (lately being a decade).

As for being good with Buffalo wings, I prefer bleu cheese. Actually, that is a better description of ranch. Its like bleu cheese dressing without the bleu cheese and add in some other spices.

While I eat it with fresh veggies in a veggie platter, for salads I prefer classic Italian, Caesar, or Greek.

Not really... they usually have hotter spicy sauce added to them rather than just a BBQ sauce. Some places that specialize in them you can get about any sauce you want, but generally it is a hot sauce of sorts.

It isn't exactly substituting barbecue sauce with tobasco or Franks red hot, but that is what it reminds me of. Generally the creamy dressing is meant to douse the heat of the orange coating on the wings. Dairy is a good (possibly the only) way to counter the capsaicin that "burns" your tongue.2013-11-11 16:39:00

I have never ranch-dressed in my life. The reason for this is that the climate here is too cold for cowboy-hats and stylish leather boots 90% of the year, so buying a specific outfit you can't wear under something else for that 10% really isn't worth it.2013-11-11 21:01:00

As an American in the UK I can report that I have not seen it anywhere on menus or at the grocery store. I've taken to buying Hidden Valley Ranch packets and bringing them here from the states to get my Ranch fix.2013-11-12 09:46:00

Isn't there some sort of sauce on a Big Mac? Is that ranch dressing?

Yes there is a sauce, but that is more like thousand island, but I think without the pickle relish in it. So no, that isn't ranch dressing.

*dies* agh! Wisconsin cheese is NOT from cans. But yes, I must admit British and French cheese is pretty amazing. Red Leicester, Emmental and Gruyere are some of my new favorites.

Babybel cheese is pretty awesome too! Plus you can make pretty cool stuff with its wax packaging:

Wow, I always thought ranch dressing was possibly the most mundane thing in the world... until this thread. Apparently, anything can become a full-on discussion.

Ranch dressing is good on salads, and is good for dipping chicken wings or celery.

The reason they haven't heard about it oversees? Maybe they have more farms than ranches.... has anyone looked up the existence of European "farm dressing"?

Or maybe they haven't heard of it... because they have better food than we do.

Ranch Dressing... I never got into the whole taste that it had. I sew my brother pour half a gallon of it just to eat with their pizza or carrots, but I've never really liked it! Call me weird, but I eat most of my food without any condiments, with the exception of mustard, ketchup, and mayonnaise on a few select items!
As for salads and stuff, I'll eat those raw and just well-cleaned. I can't even stand to have lime or salt on them. nope! Not bbq sauce, not tartar sauce, not vinaigrette, not sauerkraut, not any kind or salad dressing!

Tartar sauce is a widely used sauce with fish.

It's also a curse word on Spongebob, yes.

T'is indeed. Especially great with battered fish.

How many of you Yanks have tried good ol' English fish and chips? Perhaps with mushy peas? Or even with steak & kidney pudding instead of fish? Mmmmmmmmmmm.

Cupcakes are fine..... Twinkies are something else though! Thick cream in the middle, syrup-drenched cake..... I was running up the walls after all that sugar.

OMG!! Of course! Some of my favs have been from small pubs and eateries where the cooks came from your neck of the woods. I like mine with tarter sauce and also some malt vinegar. YUM!!

I'm guessing you're talking about pub/restaurant fish 'n chips? What about take-away fish 'n chips? Personally I wouldn't have tatare sauce with that. Just mushy peas and gravy (or curry sauce).

Do you know what I've always had a strange hankering for, due to watching US TV/film? A burger, with fries, in a basket layered with paper towels, something that you'd see in a typical American Diner. Also, some proper US-style pancakes, with blueberries, and syrup.

Not many take away places or food trucks where I frequent and none that I know of that do fish and chips. Most food trucks are downtown. The best fish and chips I've had have been pubs and restaurants. In fact, the best was this place called The Duke of Devon Pub in Sheboygan, Wisconsin up the road from where Morgana used to live. Lol

I think you mean parchment paper or wax paper that is in those baskets. We love that stuff so much we happened to find those baskets and bought quite a few so we could make our own. Lol

We also love making pancakes with fruit in them. My fav is raspberries. My fav syrup is boysenberry which is more a California berry and what I had as a kid back in San Francisco. I have to buy it by the 6 pack from Smuckers as they don't sell it around here in Indiana where I live.
