Promotion of young creators???

Archive: 8 posts

Hi community,

Recently I've played a level series of a 14 years old young creator, which has a fantastic
story, thrilling, varied gameplay, great music, only the decoration in the first two parts
could have been improved a little bit! The first two parts have got 30 plays each and parts
3 and 4 have about 10 plays each!^^ The creator has done all right, he even published a
version with subtitles in his native language and a version with English subtitles for each
part !^^
I'm often playing levels of newcomers to our forums, knowing that these are their first steps!
They often are not perfect and have some mistakes, but they are creative nevertheless just
first steps!^^
But what are we doing to encourage such first steps??? I have the impression that everybody
is only searching for high-polish products similar to the film industry where special
effects are often counting more than the story!^^
This is frustrating for the beginners! And frustration is decreasing motivation!^^ I'm
afraid that in the future there will be only few creators left if we fail to give our young
creators the attention that they also deserve!^^

What could we do?
F.e. We could organize some contests for beginners only (first level contests) or we could
do contests for different age groups! What about a spotlight-pick for newcomers? The forums
have some QPQ or F4F rules what about changing the rules in the way that one of the two
F4F/QPQ should be a newcomer level! And the forums could install a live-tutorial team, which
could prove a level and show the creator ingame how they could improve it!
I think there could be many ways to promote young creators, we should not hesitate!
Every sports club is investing in promoting of young members! With good reason!

Many greetings, Jürgen

I think this is a great idea! However, I don't exactly agree with what you said about the frustration thing. I was completely unknown a year ago, but I took whatever plays I had and was grateful for what I got. And being 14 myself, I feel like you aren't necessarily giving the young creators enough credit- but then again you are going to such a length as to change that, so kudos. Anyway, I support this idea, but I also feel like a young creator who thought his level was amazing would get his/her creation slapped into the "beginners" category. So I think if LBPC were to pursue this, we'd really have to think it out a bit further.2013-11-08 06:41:00

Hi Matthaniel,

you're totally right, if lbpc would decide to pursue these ideas then we would have to think it out further!^^ And I didn't want to offend young creators by choosing a category name like "beginners". I know that its also no matter of life age, how skilled a creator is! I've met 12yo creators who have been more skilled than I will ever be!^^ And when I started playing two years ago in the age of 49, I've been an absolute beginner too!

Many greetings, Jürgen^^

To survive in an anonymous community, the best thing to do is to completely ignore the age of everyone. This way, you can get to know them better and if you like the levels they publish, then that's it. Youth doesn't always mean inexperience, not in LBP, not in anything.

This is how I see these matters. If you think that some people should get extra credit because of their age, then that's your point of view. However, I see such actions as... ageism? Yep, ageism is apparently a word.

No promotion should go to any creator because of their age, but because of the quality they produce.

Hahaha, omg! thats really a word!^^ You could be right!^^ Maybe that this could be ageism!^^ I don't think that some people should get extra credit because of their age, I'm thinking that unexperienced creators should also get a fair chance to get noticed and supported by the community!^^

Many greetings, Jürgen^^

I don't look at age. I myself am older, not quite as old as Jürgen, but I'm no spring chicken. One of the creators I've met who has gameplay design skills as good as some of the best out there was only 12 when I met him. He was otherwise a bit immature and impatient, but his levels are fun to play.

Sort of like Sheldon Cooper, book smart but socially inept in a "Spock" sort of way.

I wouldn't count this as ageism I see it more as you wanting to help the future of LBP stay motivated. You did say first time level contests which could mean someone as young as 13 and as old as 100 could enter.

For me the "young creators " you're refering to are the new creators of this game and not necessarily one around my age.

Yeah, Shooter, I think that is what I wanted to say, the new creators of the game regardless of whether young or old!^^ Thanks a lot!^^ 2013-11-08 17:07:00
