Who all is getting a PS4 at launch?

Archive: 77 posts

I'm getting a PS4 at launch and am wondering who all is also getting one. My friends and I are all jumping ship from the 360. I'm looking forward to playing BF4, Killzone, and Warframe.

note: decided to post this as a separate thread as it's not for PS4 general discussion. and it's not a humongous thread.

There's a small chance that I'm going to get it at launch. I'll probably wait for Christmas.2013-11-07 03:25:00

I don't think I'll get one right away. I'll probably wait 6-9 months after launch and then I'll see what I can get.2013-11-07 03:37:00

LOL!! I never would have guessed!

I guess I will get one, but I might wait till whatever Mm and others are working on comes out first. That would be "mah bundle" of choice.

It's nice to know it won't be as expensive as the PS3, the people in the Sony boardroom must've been saying "they'll just dig like $1,000 out of the couch and buy one, no problem at all." I think I'll go and get one early December.2013-11-07 12:15:00

I imagine they want to avoid the early years of the PS3 in any way possible Seems like they've done everything right so far, so we'll see

Not a big shooter fan, but I still appreciate some of the stylistic decisions with KZ: Shadow Fall. Knack doesn't hold any appeal to me and neither do any of the multiplatform games this fall. Maybe after Infamous: Second Son and (hopefully) The Last Guardian or MM/Naughty Dog's games release, I'll pick one up.2013-11-07 14:54:00

I think I will wait for a long while maybe til Christmas 2014 except I will get the jackpot of the lottery or there will be a lbp4 (I call it lbp4 because its fitting better to PS4!^^)!^^

Many greetings, Jürgen^^

Getting mine at Christmas. I'm keeping my Xbox 360 and PS3 but my play station is almost on its last legs so I see it as replacing that.

My xbox account will be kept on a silver account but available if a game comes out for it (single-player and only on Xbox of course )

The Xbox One has a strong lineup but none of the games are very appealing to me. Sucks too because I still have a good 6 months left of XBL Gold.

Mine runs out in January which also helps the decision of getting a new console, that and PS+ just seems like a better service.

I will just wait for LBP3 unless it gets poor reviews, then I will wait for the new Mm game. I'm not quite sure which will come first. Probably Mm's game. From what I've seen, it looks like a creation sandbox.

I will have the Vita and LBPHub to tide me over in the meantime.

I've had PS+ on and off over the years and it is leagues ahead of XBL. You get free AND discounted stuff. You pay on Xbox to get things that you get with a basic PSN account.

That can backfire if too many people do it and seriously damage the system, we've all seen the lacking third party support and shrinking retail presence of certain recent systems.

Confession: I wouldn't mind if this gen flopped. I think that all system and game developers need a serious slap to the face, something like the ET game all over again. I'm seriously considering quitting gaming as a hobby, but let's wait and see.

That has to do with your government's ridiculous tariffs on foreign made products. Microsoft had to build their own factories there in order to bypass the rule, I really don't think it's worth ****ing the entire gaming industry for :/

Normally I'd agree with you, but I've had PS+ for a while now. Considering that I'm practically getting AAA games for ~€1 each due to PS+, I really do not care that it's mandatory for online play now.

I don't think I'm gonna get the PS4 straight away though. Probably gonna wait a couple of months until I have a decent stack of games to play on it. The good news is that my active PS+ subscription will give me PS4 games even if I don't have a PS4

I still feel that console gaming is heading the direction of mainstream music and movie industries: Manufactured games being monetized in every aspect with DLC, microtransactions, subscriptions, and even product placement. Or maybe I'm just getting old and boring.

What I am afraid of is that once everyone is settled in PS+, they will slowly begin to cut some features until just the online is left. But at least they got to compete with Xbox Live, so hopefully they won't do that.

If they want to keep their customers they will have to keep their deals. There's a reason so many people are moving to the PS4 from the 360.

Competition could force them to keep the instant game collection going. This year we've seen Microsoft launch games with gold 2 games a month free with the sub initially to December but now an ongoing thing.2013-11-08 17:02:00

Thanks to the SingStar icon/wallpaper (yes, we still have that in the EU) I'm reminded every time I turn the console on of all the **** ups Sony made the last 7 years. Why would anyone want another round of the same thing?

You think no one should want a PS4 because they have a Singstar App? I am confused.

Yep, there's a fullscreen advert for SingStar every time the console is powered on. The SingStar icon (which is huge) is always present under the game tab of the XMB no matter what you do. It was removed in an update for NA regions, but we still have it in the EU. It's really, really obnoxious.

Do you remember when the XMB wasn't cluttered up with ****, like when there wasn't PlayStation Store icons under practically every tab like there is now?

I thought that it only appeared on startup if you didn't have a game in the tray (because it was at the top of the downloadable games list and it just defaults to that)

Either way, that is a really, REALLY stupid reason to wish death on a console. :/

It's not the sole reason. I wrote that it reminds me of all the **** ups over the last 7 years. Cluttering up the XMB is one of them.

The worst offenses were removing so many features post-launch, when PSN was down for a month, and the revelation that their customer data wasn't hashed.

The PS4 will be the same, only you have to pay a monthly fee for the disservice.

Honestly I'm waiting for the day where most console gaming dies off... At least the current main consoles. And for it all go to mainly PC and handheld gaming. I was only a fairly loyal Sega console fan in the past. And after that failed, I personally don't get very attached to single company's consoles anymore. I'll just buy whatever system has games that I like. And It would be better in my opinion if it was all in one spot. one system. that can keep being upgraded, which = PC. *mew2013-11-09 22:17:00

This. I can't enjoy being restricted to whatever the developers wants inside their consoles. Excuse if I sound elitist, but one of the greatest upsides of PC gaming is that I can build and customize my experience how I want. Consoles on the other hand, are getting more closed every time.

I like the Playstation especially since the PS1 was my first home gaming console (Gameboy was first one overall) but recently I've gotten more into PC gaming. I've played games on my PC for a long time and recently I've only just started playing online with it and putting my steam account to use. Further down the line most of my gaming might be on the PC.

Heck maybe it would be a good thing if some console developers got out of the market or went bankrupt. It would give the market a much needed reshuffle and might make developers think twice about DRM policies and might improve their services.

I do get jealous of all the mods etc in games such as Skyrim and Fallout, and also all the great looking indie titles available on PC such as Gone Home and Stanley Parable (to name a couple of recent examples), but console gaming is much more convenient for me. Games are easily patched, you don't have to faff around with updating your graphics card and all that nonsense, plus a lot of PC games require you to use a mouse and keyboard. Of course you can use a controller for some game but LETTURZ AND NUMB3RS IZ FER TYPING NOT PLAYING OMG.

In all fairness, Knack wasn't even a priority as its lead designer, Cerny, was concentrating on building the ps4 itself and was very clear that the game was simply a fun side project. To be honest, I'm not even sure why Knack is judged so harshly considering its target demographic is small children... if it was for an adult audience I would understand but the reviews seem to forget that. Coincidentally I remember playing much worse children's games when I was young that today are praised as classics.

As for The Last Guardian... It is getting to a Half life 3 state of hype and, paradoxically, is far more influential by not actually existing as it will likely never surpass people's expectations.

That's fine. Knack has some interesting ideas surrounding it, and other games from SCE Japan have come along and look nice too, like Puppeteer for example. I just find it a bit sad that The Last Guardian is being pushed aside, and in my own opinion, for a game that doesn't deserve as much time and effort put into it, but that's just my opinion.

People say that most launch games should be seen as merely glorified tech demos, which isn't far off for a lot of them, and it is fair to say that a lot of games for kids don't always need the best plot, but I guess my nostalgia-tinted glasses are kicking in when I remember visiting my neighbor's house when I was much younger to watch as they were able to play as an anthropomorphic thieving raccoon who learned different stealthy tricks that traced back to his family's origins as he took down large crime bosses in pursuit for a metallic, time-travelling hawk that killed his parents. Not that I would have soaked in all the details as clearly back then as I do now, but still, there were still some fun games aimed at children that packed a bit more oomph in terms of premise in comparison to what Knack has to offer.

But again, that's just my opinion of it.

First games I played was the classic Sonic & Mario games.
(Sonic is still my favorite series obviously)
And basically those games didn't have any real story at all. Think FF7 was the first game I played that had real deep story to it. Didn't play SlyCooper games till this year, I played all of them in a row. That was a good time, Great games. But I don't think all games need a deep story to be a good game. but for games that do focus around a story, I do wish they would try much harder. Doesn't matter what age a game is targeted forward. If it focus around a story then It's never a excuse to not bother writing a fun well made story. Regardless what age target the game is made for. No one should be excluded from enjoying a good story. *mew

Mouse and keyboard is better for most games. Try playing ArmA on a console... There aren't enough buttons.

Only time I don't use a mouse on PC games is for racing games, I have my Fanatec CSR for that...

So, reviews for launch games haven't been amazing so far. Indie games seem to be getting the better reviews, though Killzone does still look good. Resogun getting the best reviews, but I'm not keen on that genre. So I'm not even slightly tempted to get it near launch.

I agree with you to an extent; some games feel "great" with a keyboard, and others feel great with a controller.

Shooters? Controllers. Skyrim? Keyboard. Minecraft? Keyboard. Anything else is usually a controller.

Anyways, PS4 launch is 15 hours away from me right now Getting very excited!

Plus, keyboards tend not to be wireless so you can't throw them across the room when you get ****ed off. *woof

Yeah but it's fine if you get used to it. Most people have been playing with controllers all their lives, try a keyboard for a game once or twice and realise they aren't as good, and decide that therefore the controller is worse, rather than it being something to do with the fact that they are not used to it.

I mean, ArmA has like 9 different lean positions, and that would never work on a console effectively, yet it is simple on PC - and very important in ArmA. I enjoy using a controller, and it's much easier to use when you're with mates and all that, but kb&m is, in my opinion, a lot better in pretty much every way for gaming on your own/at a desk...

Nice, which games did you end up buying?

Killzone: Shadow Fall and Battlefield 4. Two of the most graphically impressive game's I've ever played and this generation has barely even started out.

I also downloaded Warframe, DC Universe Online, and Blacklight: Retribution since they are free to play. Resogun is too, I plan on downloading it soon.

The controller is amazing. I started out this last gen playing the PS3, but moved over to Xbox to be with my friends. I didn't think the 360 controller could be topped, but the Dualshock 4 is leagues ahead. The touchpad is really awesome too, I can see it having great potential in the future if utilised properly.

The XMB (UI) is crazy awesome too. I don't think you can change to a custom theme (yet), but I like the default blue. You can hit the PS button in the middle of a game, go to the PS Store, open up a party chat, whatever and you don't have to exit your game.

Most games have huge file sizes, but I usually only have to wait like 30 seconds to start playing.

Load times are insane, usually non-existent. It takes like 10 seconds to select "Killzone: Shadow Fall" to get to the game's main menu.

The share button is really great. The PS4 is constantly recording so you can share a video clip that is the past 15 minutes of what you've done, you can share a screenshot to twitter or facebook, and you can stream using Twitch or uStream, which I have already tried, and it's wonderful.

This probably isn't the place to ask this, but is it possible to save the recording to your hard drive or some other place to store it without publishing it for others to watch?

I think so, haven't tried it yet.

Free games on XBOX? I mean, seriously. Read what is said: "access to free games." This probably means a two-day access to a certain game once in a month.2013-11-16 18:11:00

Most of the Xbox One's features just seams pointless and dumb. A lot of it is Kinect 2.0 related. OMG GUESS WHAT! THE KINECT CAN TELL YOU YOUR HEART RATE!! OMG THAT'S SO REVOLUTIONARY!! THAT'S GOING TO CHANGE GAMING FOR THE BETTEREFBUGBRESJBKBTJSRBVLTRd...... I really don't get why Microsoft added that.. It seems completely pointless..

So another feature that the Xbone does with Kinect is automatically sign you in to your console or a friend's console just by seeing your face(if you've already signed into that console). That can be useful, but I bet friends will just hold up a pic of their friend's face to hack their account.

Also, don't get me started on voice control. You can do a lot with it, even a lot more than PS4, but really, who uses it? I never use voice control on any device I have because I'll sound like an idiot talking to nothing.

Let's see, this new Snap feature seems cool. Only if I could do that on my PS4.. OH WAIT, I CAN. My HDTV has an option to show two screens side by side like this Snap feature on the Xbone. I bet if you have a flat-screen HDTV that it can do it as well.. But, when would anybody ever need to show two screens on a TV at once? To watch a video of how to pass that level while you attempt it? Just using your phone is easy enough. To watch television while playing games? That would be nice if I could put my full attention in two places. Wait, that's so that other people can watch TV while I play games? I'll just get out a Vita and remote play this game so I'm not hogging your screen.

Point is, a lot of Xbox One features just seem pointless to me. But same goes for PS4, though not as many. Both consoles have their ways for doing things. I might end up getting an Xbox One too after a while.

This may seem like a stupid question to ask, but for those that own Shadow Fall, is L1 used for aiming?2013-11-17 04:31:00

nope, the L2 and R2 buttons are for aiming and shooting now since they got redesigned. L1 is now used for summoning the OWL.2013-11-17 04:36:00

Well, at least it's something similar to L1. Thanks.2013-11-17 19:26:00

The answer is over one million people.

Sales of Sony’s latest gaming console, the PlayStation 4, surpassed one million in just 24 hours. That’s really impressive, considering that it’s only out in one region – the United States and Canada – and that’s “sold through” to consumers, rather than just shipped to stores.
The hype surrounding the launch had been huge, although the fact that Sony had been telling people to pre-order to not miss out might have had something to do with the phenomenal day one sales.
As the PS4 becomes available in Europe from the 29th of November, Sony should expect even more day one sales – perhaps another million if everything goes smoothly – and following on from that, they’ll have a boost in sales when the next shipments arrive.
Also worth noting is that the PS4 will have two further launches, in Asian territories in December and then Japan in February. This huge install base is fantastic, as it means guaranteed support from third party publishers.
All eyes on Microsoft’s worldwide Xbox One launch on Friday, then.

Pffffffffffffft. I hope they're not pressure sensitive controls, since I always prefer L1/R1 for aiming/shooting.

Battlefield 4 and Killzone: Shadow Fall have options to let you use "classic" controls (R1 shoot, L1 aim). I REALLY dislike classic controls, lol2013-11-19 01:42:00

I actually find myself preferring the shoulder buttons rather than the top ones for gunfights since Max Payne 3/ GTA V. The fire button actually feels like a trigger, and in GTA V, if you keep your finger just over the trigger you will aim the weapon but not fire. It's the little things. :&apos

I can use L2/R2 for GTA, strangely. But I've never used them for FPS games (not like I play a lot of FPS games anywho, but Killzone IS one of them). I'd have to see how it feels.

I still want to see a controller with button feedback. Like a trigger that pushes back after every shot, or a brake button that vibrates when the ABS kicks in.

I'm really hyped to see what this new title will be! It sounds like something amazing whatever it is, but it only serves to remind me that I still need to get my own PS4 quickly!

It should be noted that we know for a fact Michael Angeli, one of the chief guys behind BattleStar, one of the greatest shows ever, has been working with Sony Santa Monica for 2 and a half years on a new IP. So it's very likely this is that.

There is a lack of open world sci fi games, in futuristic cities. I basically want a futuristic GTA game with flying cars!

I doubt it's THAT kind of Open World...

Anyway, I found out I can register PS+ games online, so I have Resogun and Contrast for whenever I pick one up. Probably more by the time I can get one.

Usually I'm pretty quick at getting Sony consoles. I always end up with a first-gen model anyway. Which is a good thing because I don't like any of the "slim" playstation designs. I don't plan to get a PS4 any time soon but of course I will at some point, and hopefully not an ugly v2 version.2013-11-21 20:24:00
