Small Aircraft

Archive: 11 posts

I've published a level named "Funky Flyers" (Search for @Mikey-Flies and then choose to find more by this author) in which are some small aircraft you can fly around in.

Up to 3 people can fly at once (each in their own lane) but until you get a handle on the controls it can be hard to stick together. I'm interested in feedback on these as I think these are a novel way to fly in LBP

The level itself is very basic and the scoreboard is at the far right of the level.

It's very fun to fly once you get the hang of the tilt, and I know how difficult it is to get flight to work how you want it to in this game. It's too bad that space is so limited or you could do alot to open up what can be done with this. A stunt course for these things would be awesome.

I like how there is no visible smoke or audible rocket sounds... nice job on balancing it so well.

The speed is really fun, but if you could somehow slow them down, there'd be alot of flexibility in implementing them into a level.

Also - for the 3rd one that's tough to exit because it's on the front plane, try making a docking area that has the 3 ships spawn in the same plane but on different ledges that each player can pick. Split everyone up and keep them in the camera zone, everyone gets their own and it's all on one plane.

The same plane is problematic once in the air (collisions). I put a note about the front plane because it is a pain to exit earlier You can land it next to the middle planes resting block (or another plane) and hop onto/into it to exit.

I'm trying to think of how to keep them slow. I can probably rebalance after changing most of the plane to pink floaty which *should* allow me to lower the thurst and still allow controlled flight.

The speed isn't a problem once you get the hang of keeping them in one area but it does take some practice

The lack of smoke/rocket sounds is because they are emitter powered which I've been using for various motive forces in several test contraptions on my moon

That's pretty neat... I once propelled a vehicle horizontally with rapid paintball collision from an emitter, but never implemented in a level. How did you pull this off?2009-01-30 10:17:00

I've made small aircraft before, but their paths have always been "scripted". In other words, a prop hanging from a dark-matter gantry, sometims tiltable and with weapons (like in Savage Skies). Either way, these are pretty cool. I really want to implement actual pilotable aircraft in one of my levels someday.2009-01-30 15:30:00

I liked the them, and they're very simple to master aswell which is great. Nice of you to give it out as a gift at the end - cheers 2009-01-30 17:55:00

Thanks for all the great comments

They fly by having a glass block smack the underside of the wing on the front. The top peach floaty is balanced by the mass of the plane, wheel, and sackboy. The front wheel is relatively heavy and offsets the thrust from the emitter (which means when not thrusting the aircraft has a tendancy to tip forward and when thrusting it sort of wobbles back-front-back as it sways. The entire mass of the aircraft is light enough that sackboys lean-force is enough to tip it forwards and backwards for directional control.

For interest glass was the perfect weight for what I wanted. I tried stone but it was too heavy and was tricky to tune. To get the right thrust it was a game of adjusting the size of the glass block, the speed of the glass block, and the distance of the placed block from the emitter (If you don't know the further away from an emitter an object is emitted the higher the speed it will be emitted with). The balance was achieved by adjusting the size of the top wing, the location and size of the wheel, the location and size of the player area, and the location of impact of the emitted glass blocks.

I started with a bunch of flying ideas on my moon and these evolved from an original 3 thickness wide plane with a moveable tail that was intended to provide altitude control. Many iterations later I had the tiny aircraft of which this is a slightly refined version.
