Header Submission Thread

Archive: 59 posts

Hey guys! We've got a new style for the site now and we want you to get involved! I've set up a basic PHP script for the new style that will rotate a set of headers that we specify. Basically, it will randomly pick a header to load each time you go to a new page, so you see a new image at the top of the style. We're interested in getting you guys involved, so here's a way for you to make headers for the new skin! We've got no limit (theoretically, anyway) to the number of headers we accept; I'd love to see a ton of these in the future.

Requirements

Make sure you've installed Adobe Photoshop(Free 30 Day Trial (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?loc=en&promoid=EBYEU&product=photoshop), Windows & Mac) or GIMP (Windows (http://www.gimp.org/downloads/), Mac (http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/)). Photoshop is preferred, but it is very resource-heavy and the full version is not free. GIMP is free, light, and can be installed on both major Operating Systems. GIMP lacks a few nice features that Photoshop has, but nothing absolutely necessary.
You must download one of the.psd files. Links are located in the application-specific instructions below.

Making a New Header

If you would like, we have an extensive directory (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/../screenshots_19471) of high-resolution (56k: you are warned) LittleBigPlanet screenshots. This directory will only be accessible to you while we are accepting submissions. You may insert these raw, or you may render your own cutouts and make a more stylized header. It's up to you, but remember: simplicity is key. Here's an example header (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/rotate/confusedcartman.png); it's not great by any means (I wish the croc fit) but it gives you an idea of what we're shooting for. All effects (the logo, gradients, etc) are provided in the .psd file. All you have to do is insert content.

Download and open the photoshop_header-base.psd (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/assets/photoshop/photoshop_header-base.psd) file.
Expand the "your content below this" folder. (image (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/assets/photoshop/your_content_below_this.png))
Copy and Paste or Insert your content into "your content below this". Position it to your liking. Make sure the layer itself is positioned above the "your content above this" layer. (image (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/assets/photoshop/your_content_correct_position.png))
You could stop here, or you could customize the logo type and location. I'll show you how to do so if you're interested.
Expand the "choose one logo" folder. (image (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/assets/photoshop/choose_one_logo.png))
If you want to use a predefined location, expand the "presets" folder. If you want to resize and reposition the logo to fit the image you are using, expand the "custom position" folder. (image (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/assets/photoshop/presets_or_custom.png))

The "presets" folder contains 4 pre-aligned logos. Just toggle the visibility of the one you want to use (be sure to toggle off the others so you don't have multiple logos on the screen). (image (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/assets/photoshop/presets_options.png))
The "custom position" folder contains one large, 2D version of the logo. Feel free to resize and move as needed. (image (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/assets/photoshop/custom_options.png))

Once you've decided you're happy with it, go File > Save As. Use your site username as the filename, and choose .png as the filetype. (image (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/assets/photoshop/saving.png))

Please note: if you make more than one header, name them [username], [username]1, [username]2, etc.

Download and open the gimp_header-base.psd (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/assets/gimp/gimp_header-base.psd) file.
Select the "your content above this" layer.
Make sure your content is saved on your hard drive, then go File > Open as Layer. Navigate to your content and open it up. (image (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/assets/gimp/your_content.png))

Make sure your content is positioned above the "your content above this" layer and below the "your content below this" layer. It should place itself there automatically if you selected the "your content above this" layer before opening. (image (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/assets/gimp/your_content_position.png))

Position and resize this new layer as you like.
Note: Any layer with (x) in it's name is crucial and should not be touched. Logo presets are a slight exception: you may toggle their visibility, but do not move or resize them in any way.
You could stop here, or you could customize the logo type and location. I'll show you how to do so if you're interested.
There are 4 "logo presets" and a large "custom logo". Toggle the visibility of the one you prefer and make sure all other logo layers are toggled off. (image (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/assets/gimp/toggle_visibility.png))

You are free to resize and move the "custom logo", but leave the presets alone if you decide to use them.

Once you've decided on a logo and you're happy with your header, go File > Save as. Expand the "Select FileType" section and select PNG. Use your site username as the filename. (image (http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/header/assets/gimp/select_file_type.png))

Please note: if you make more than one header, name them [username], [username]1, [username]2, etc.

Submission Guidelines

Just upload it to a website like ImageShack (http://www.imageshack.us)or Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/).

Please ensure the image does not get automatically resized. If the image is not 936x220px, you've done something wrong.

Post the image in this thread. Just find the link that ends in ".png" (expand Show Advanced Linking on ImageShack), paste it in a post on this thread, and wrap it in [img] tags.
As mentioned before, you may submit as many as you'd like. Just be sure to include your name in the filename so we know who created the header.
We are not adding every single submission. We will scan this thread and add the ones we like, but don't expect that we'll add everything.
Finally, there is no xp reward for participating. However, if we pick one of yours, it will be up for the world to see, so make a few!

The header is, yes. The skin is all-inclusive; it's a full-fledged makeover. It's still very familiar in terms of layout, but it's much sleeker. I've gotta stop myself now, though; I could talk about it for a long time.

Yes, he's been working on it for a long time now. I'm actually using it, so I can bughunt in case we've missed anything. We want to make sure this thing is 150% ready before we let it out.

In my opinion, very very much so. It's fluid as well, meaning it stretches based on your resolution. That's part of the reason for the gradient in the header image. You'll see what I mean when we let it out.

CC has given me a sneak peak of the new skin that is in the works. I must say it looks better than the previous "new skin" we had, and is kind of a mixture between the current (old) skin with a few subtle changes to make it look better. I won't say any more though. My lips are sealed CC, honest!

It's interesting though the whole variable header thing. You didn't mention this specifically, but I would think you would want only E rated images and have something to do with LBPCentral, right?

I assumed that would be obvious. Our site logo is included in the .psd file, so unless you really screw it up, we'll probably add it.

And, just a quick note: We will continue to support the current skin. You'll be able to switch back to it if you prefer it over the new one. We won't force you to use the new one if you really don't want to.

Do you have to make a header within a certain time-limit?

At the rate they are being submitted...no. We've only got one, and I'm not a fan of it, so make as many as you'd like.

I'll probably end up making a few more, but I've been working all day, so I'm taking a break. I'll whip up 5 or 10 tomorrow and add them to the circulation.

Wow, they are all really fantastic! I couldn't add cornonthecod's because the top white gradient does not match what was in the .psd. If you use what's supplied and resubmit, I'll be able to add it.

Paint Shop Pro wont work?
I can't say for sure. GIMP is free, light, and works across all platforms; plus, I'm fairly familiar with the interface. You're free to try it in Paint Shop Pro, but if it doesn't come out right, I won't be able to accept it.
