Sackboy in wonderland

Archive: 18 posts

All in the golden afternoon

Full leisurely we glide ;
For both our oars, with little skill,

By little arms are plied,
While little hands make vain pretence

Our wanderings to guide.

Ah, cruel Three ! In such an hour,

Beneath such dreamy weather,
To beg a tale of breath too weak

To stir the tiniest feather !
Yet what can one poor voice avail

Against three tongues together ?

Imperious Prima flashes forth

Her edict " to begin it "-
In gentler tone Secunda hopes

"there will be nonsense in it ! "-
While tertia interrupts the tale

Not more than once a minute.

Anon, to sudden silence won,

In fancy they persue
The dream-child moving through a land

Of wonders wild and new ,
In friendly chat with bird or beast-

And half believe it true.

And ever, as the story drained

The wells of fancy dry,
And faintly strove that weary one

To put the subject by,
"The rest next time-" "It is next time !"

The happy voices cry.

Thus grew the tale of Wonderland :

Thus slowly, one by one,
Its quaint events were hammered out-

And now the tale is done,
And home we steer, a merry crew,

Beneath the setting sun.

Alice ! a childish story take,

and with a gentle hand
Lay it where Chilhood's dreams are twined

In Memory's mystic band,
Like pilgrim's withered wreath of flowers

Plucked in a far-off land.

-Lewis Carroll

hey guys I just wanted to share that... and Sackboy in Wonderland is finally complete...

I welcome any feedback, and will return the favor.

Im pretty sure I got them all, (played through like a hundred times) but if you see and spelling errors, let me know... (except the caterpillar, he's supposed to say exactically.) also there was a problem early on with the chase scene at the end... if you get to the end and nothing is chasing you let me know about that too, I think i fixed the problem... hasn't happened since i did, but just keep your eyes out for it... other than that, have fun, enjoy... theres a few pretty cool prizes on the level aswell.

Hey Mada,

I gave you level a spin, some very nice visuals and game play worked in from the classic story.

Pros:
+All the work put into the characters paid off, I'm far from an expert but each character brought back memories for me, good job.
+Eat me, very cool payoff . Worked perfect both times I tried it.
+Croquette, very original way to get a sackboy from A-B.

Cons:
-The Unbirthday Tea Party gave me a lot of problems, it's really hard to see the 'hot tea' and even when you know where its gonna be the two layers of different sized objects made it hard to navigate. Often I'd be trying to jump from cup to cup only to have my sackboy catch the edge of the cake, fall down and die. Used the continue and a couple lives on the retry.
-The race part was kinda a none event since I missed the first platform jump I just ran in the empty level without seeing another platform to jump up on. Give some more low levels for people to get back on the hopping fun part.
-I feel like I was missing something in the forest with the cat, I looked around at "stand on your head" but could not figure out if there was anything there.

Since you asked I think the Mad Hatter said 'waisting' instead of 'wasting' not sure if that was from the story or not.

Hope this helps,

Oh man, I absolutely LOVE Lewis Carrol and once I stop getting the Error 403 message when I try and go online I'll give this a play. I was thinking about putting up an Alice in Wonderland level of my own, but you (and some others I'm sure) have beaten me to the punch. I hope you did it justice! 2009-01-30 04:32:00

I did everything I could lol.. devoted a lot of time to it, tried to make all the characters as perfect as possible (especially by LBP standards) but yea I hope you like it. tell me what you think when you get it working...

Oh yea and for anyone who has trouble with the level... here.
Sackboy in wonderland walkthrough...

most of the level is pretty self explanitory, but incase you need help with anything, here's a walkthrough.
1. spawn, follow the rabbit down the rabbit hole.
2 grab the floaty skirt to fall slowly and probably pick up more score bubbles, or dont and get to the bottom faster.
3 drink the bottle, fall and open the door.
4 cross the river by swinging on flowers, can be tricky, especially if you fall the first try.
5 the flowers try to crush/kill you, the point bubles are in safe zones... some of these move faster than others. last one is fastest.
6 climb the two mushrooms and jump over to the caterpillars mushroom. listen to he jibba jabba. to get the caterpillar object jump up just to the left of the hookah, land on his tale, jump up to his hands on the right, get on top of the second one from the bottom, when his smoking hand is is down jump across and grab his arm, wait till his arm goes back up to stand on his left arm.. grab the arm again let it pull you to the top jump over his head land on the peice of grass... grab a floating vowel to get to the other part of the grass... jump to the bundle of flowers to get to top of grass staulk.. grab object.
7 eat the mushroom to grow back to regular size
8 run past Tweedle Dee/dumb, and through the forest untill you get to mad hatter.
9 to get the mad hatter jump on the tall tea cup in the back layer, jump on the left side of the cake, jump to the bundle of flowers, grab object
10 there are many ways to make it across the table... there are 4 tea pots, the second 1 will never hurt you. watch close to make sure the pot isnt spewing gas before you jump infront of it. the best way I found to get across is to jump on the cake and the second the gas clears the 3rd teapot, jump on the candles burn your butt and bounce to right infront of the 3rd teapot, then stay still untill the 4th and 3rd finish there smoke again, second the 3rd one stops, jump over and your home free.
11 run some more through more forest, talk to the cheshire cat. you will eventually find the shortcut to the Queen of Hearts.
12 grab the sticker and help the card paint the roses red.
13 wait for the queen to swing her bird, the second she does run under it and collect the bubbles.
14 be ready to grab the ball (Hedgehog?) the second it is emitted.
15 fly across the poisonous gas. the second you land, run...
16 simple platforming run and jump all the way to the left.
17 step on scoreboard.. recieve cheshire cat, white rabbit, and if you didnt die tweedle dee/dumb. If you went out of the way and got the caterpillar and the hatter, you will also recieve the queen of hearts.
18 rate super high, and click on on "heart this"
19 have a great day.

Okay, I just played your level and here are my thoughts...

Pros:

Excellent design work, especially the characters. Loved the Calico Cat and The Queen.
I liked your attention to the details of Carroll's story. Can tell you're a fan.
The shrinking scene was ingenious. Very well done. (as if Sackboy needed to get any smaller)

Cons:

Just as an experiment, I tried going left at the beginning (despite it being obvious that I'm meant to go right and down the rabbit hole). When I did, I was able to reach the edge and drop off, which landed me on a wood block that I was also able to jump off of. This landed me on the outside of the giant bottle/table/chair scene with no choice but to retry. Not a real big deal, but you might want to place something to prevent getting that far.
I flew right by the floaty material in the rabbit hole without even noticing it the first few times I played. Then on a whim I decided to move around a bit more on my free fall and noticed it in there. Not sure what to suggest here though that might make it more obvious.
The first time I got to the mushroom, I jumped a bit to the right and fell off the platform, leaving me at the base of the piston looking up. Now, I tried climbing the caterpillar, but just couldn't seem to manage it. This time there was no choice but to restart altogether. Am I meant to be able to climb the caterpillar if this happens? I could see a sponge and winch up to the right.
Some of the checkpoints were either hard to find or hard to get to (Sackboy was being propelled to quickly). Sorry I can't be more specific on this one, I'd have to replay it and take better notes.
There were a few places (the calico cat's forest comes to mind) where it seems we are walking for quite some time and the only reward is the text. I get that we want all the text, as it's important to the author's vision, but perhaps there could be some more activity (enemies, puzzles, jumping, swinging, I dunno). Just a thought.
Also you wanted to know if I didn't get chased at the end. The first two times, yes (and I didn't make it out alive), but the last time through nothing chased me - which of course made it real easy to finish the level.

These are all just suggestions. The only real bug that I ran into (other than the lack of pursuit at the end) was my mushroom predicament, and it may just be that I wasn't skilled enough to navigate the hard way up (?).

All in all, I'd say this is a great level. I had a lot of fun playing it. Visually stimulating, true to the source material, and well conceived and tested game play. Gave it 5 stars and a heart.

Good job.

I liked the look of the level a ton... Rather than give pros and cons, I will just go chronologically.

I thought the Caterpillar was really cool looking... The mushrooms getting up to him were a bit of pain that you could accidentally walk under them. And you might want to add some kind of direction to the mushroom more than "over there" and he says that he is exactly 3 inches in "hight" which should be spelled "height".

When you eat the mushroom, it goes up so fast that I shot off to the right, as I had to jump to get to the mushroom, so I kept going... You might want to put a little wall or something to the right to keep from shooting off.

The tea party area I liked the idea of, but I to be honest, I hated it. It was too hard to get over the tea cups and avoid the tea. It would be better to have the tea pots spawn a little slower, and have the rabbit not sway so much... He blocks your view of the first teapot a lot.

The whole level looked super cool though... You did an awesome job!

Great Level, just a few issues. I didn't get chased at what looked like the chase scene from 'Skulldozer'. Weird.

The very start I went right and could drop off, and there was some very ugly dark matter lurking there too. Close off that bit and delete the dark matter showing.

The tea party was awkward and I'd suggest revamping that to make it more enjoyable, and more obvious where the gas is.

The good points are the character designs, very very good. The whole story here stays true to the book, good to see

Also the touch of genius that really made the level for me was the 'Drink me' bit, VERY well executed. It got a heart from me, just sort out those bugs and it'll be a great level.

Thanks for the great feedback you guys. Hmm never really even thought of going off to the left, thanks for bringing that to my attention.

ok planned fixxes:

make it impossable to go to left at the start.

Check spelling on caterpillar

slow the speed on the growing mushroom

Figure out a revampt to the tea party that will make it more about fun, and less about random unseen death

add more gameplay elements (jumps and swings maybe to secret bubbles?)) to the cheshires cat's forest.

change the label on the drink me bottle (so it says drink me instead of chug)

I believe i should have enough room on my thermometer to fix these problem.

Thanks for getting back to me dobi and V0rtex.

and Im going to play your level in just a bit Kobrakai

Okay, Madafaku i just played your level and here are my thoughts.

Pros:

-Awesome idea, i like the originality of level (or so in my perspective, there may be other Wonderland levels)

-Good use of a PS Eye, using it only for the cards and faces. Or atleast that what it looks like...if you didnt use a PS Eye then thats awesome!

-Fun concepts, the golf club was a cool idea for transport. Also painting the roses red, people rarely include sticker switches.

-The opening door effect is cool

-Fixed the chase scene!!!

Cons:

-whne you eat the mushroom to get bigger, the platform doesnt return back down. I was moving slightly when i "ate" the mushroom. The platform left without me and never returned. I had to restart the level which ticked me off.

Overall i thought this was a cute, fun level. Even though i did not have the honor of actually finishing it.

4/5 Stars. -1 because of the chase scene.

Also i looked at your teleporters...they're sweet!

-Also with the chase scene, the spawn point was destroyed so my level ended there.
Yes... I knew there was something else!

I had this problem too - it was why I did not survive the chase scene when it actually happened.

hmm Ill look into this problem, havent seen it myself but Ill try to replicate it and find whats wrong.. also noticed a problem with multiplayer, where its impossable to get across the pit of gas on the coqet ball, only thing I can think of to fix this is add a 2X switch that will emmit a bridge or somthing, not sure will try to work on this more when I finish my current project.

oh yea, and the the checkpoint should activate when you eat the mushroom, so you shouldnt have to restart, just kill yourself if you dont make it to the top. Ill try to make the checkpoint more apparent.2009-02-14 18:38:00

I liked this level a lot! Hearted it and commented!

Lots of creative stuff, characters with a lot of details. The Small/big thing is very interesting and fun xD Loved the dialogue of the characters too hehe

In the end, i got chased by the card boss. This part was really hard haha, but i think it worked well heheh
Didn't have much problem in the tea part. (another creative thing in my opinion)

The only thing i think it can be improved, its after the caterpillar part, were you get pushed by a sponge and see a Dark Matter block. But isn't great deal hehe

A really great level!

Hey Mada - thanks for your input on Electronomicon DELTA!

I greatly enjoyed your level - I'm a big fan of Lewis Carroll! Your characters were nicely crafted and you presented the story well.

Just a few minor niggles that should be easy enough to iron out.

Firstly, any seasoned platform gamer goes in the opposite direction of what is intended - just to see if there are any secrets or prizes. The secret of your level is that you fall off the edge if you turn left at the start! Lol, place an invisible wall of anti-matter so that people can't get back there.

I had a bit of trouble with the party table too! It's very nice in terms of visuals, but it is very tough to spot the dangers.

The only other issue is the chase at the end - it works if you're expecting it, but if not you kind of get left behind.

Overall though a nice concept, I'll happily keep testing it as you make changes - just shoot me a PM when you've altered something and I'll give it a look.
