"Boss" mechanics

Archive: 4 posts

Hello,

I'm slowly working on a project, but I'm still in the "proof of concept" phase. I hope that (1) it's possible, and (2) someone will be able to answer.

What I'm going for is a "boss" that moves around (not on a path) and periodically utilizes a few "moves." I've made the boss and initially was going to use a look-at motor and boosters, but realized boosters don't seem to work with non-dynamic items, so I've converted the object into a kart. Figure a dynamic object would go flying when hit by a weapon, which is not what I want to happen so I haven't attempted that. Now I'm having trouble getting the first move to work right, a charge attack. It doesn't work as a self weaponizing weapon from an emitter on the boss (and having logic for this on the kart makes a huge hit box around the kart). I was thinking next I would try to activate boosters on the boss, but I'm not hopeful it would work (besides, putting dangerous tweakers on the kart kills itself as soon as it spawns). I'm thinking my next idea would be to use the kart loadout tool to give it to the kart to use, but my concern is that I want a few moves for it to do - can you use logic to randomly activate different loadouts? Does the game allow that?

Related to the last idea, I was wanting one of the moves to cause the boss to leap in the air and activate a weapon once hitting the ground. I figure I'd need to time it right to activate simultaneously, rather than on actual impact. My main concern with this is can you make a kart launch in the air on command as a weapon?

HI StJimmtsAddiction.
I was actual thinking along the lines of your first idea.
What if you makme your boss an object instead of a Kart. Then maybe you could use the booster idea. However, place a booster on the top of the boss. Have it to give just enough thrust to keep it on the ground. Also, if you place a low thrust booster on each side with central effect, it may act to dampen any erraric movement and keep it rooted. Just an idea as havent tried it.

Not a bad idea. My concern is making it dynamic which, regardless of the mass, gravity, friction or other dampers you try to put on them they act extremely eratic when struck. Another thing that needs to be addressed. Laidbackcat posted a copy able level of a boss as a tutorial, and uses a bunch of pistons linked for random movements. Not something I've ever seen before but seems to be effective.

Thanks for the response!
