Suffering From Creators Block
Archive: 7 posts
Ever since I decided to temporarily move away from Windows 7: Vita Edition, I've been at a loss for creation. I have some projects I'm working on, but I can't seem to make much progress in anything really. So...any suggestions/requests would be awesome! Thanks! | 2013-10-24 05:06:00 Author: qwerty123456 Posts: 309 |
Entering a competition always helps me get motivated (even though I never make the deadline ). I haven't seen many lately, so I'm hoping there'll be a big flood of competitions when the LBP Hub comes out. | 2013-10-30 23:09:00 Author: Rogar Posts: 2284 |
I try to think of things I want to see/do that I don't see in the community. I ask myself, "What void is there to fill and do I want to fill it?" I also look around outside gaming to see what could be incorporated into a game, either thematically, visually or maybe in a puzzle capacity. | 2013-11-01 13:45:00 Author: DreadRandal Posts: 434 |
I usually recommend not trying to be innovative or do something noone hasnt done before. I think the first thing you should do is play other levels or games. I think part of being a good creator is being a good thief. Take ideas that work and make them your own. How may levels have we seen that paid homage to tons of games we have grew up with? These will lead to innovation, but the first thing you want is to just decide what type of experience you want to create. I think creators block happens more frequently when you either have too many ideas, or when you feel your ideas arent good or innovative enough. But they are! Creator block means you want to create something and that will is a great step forward. So my second suggestion would be to decide what type of experience you want to create. Action, platformer, rpg etc. Whatever you pick, has to be something you find interesting. If you are not having fun making it, you will likely not finish it. Whats your favorite game? Whats a game you always wanted to play? Use questions like these to help spark a creative nudge. | 2013-11-02 17:26:00 Author: Rpg Maker Posts: 877 |

Well now I know I probably don't need to play your levels, because apparently I already have on someone else's Earth. =B One of the biggest complaints in the community is wading through rehashed versions of the same thing to find something new. If all you want is to be like everyone else, I suppose that's fine. But that isn't me. I like doing my own thing. I don't mean make something truely alien, but certainly find a way to make your mark. Is it harder? Maybe. Personally though, I have never found the easy path to be the most rewarding. For example, I just played an unbelievably gorgeous looking community level yesterday that was boring to play, because 100% of the gameplay was straight out of official LBP2 levels that I'd already played countless times to ace the game. It was truly a shame. | 2013-11-02 19:53:00 Author: DreadRandal Posts: 434 |

It was truly a shame. Actually I dont have any published levels, and I would say my project is pretty anticipated for having a "new" gameplay and experience not seen in LBP yet. I would also say read the rest of my post. I never told TC to copy levels or rehash them. I said play levels and see what works. Use them as blueprints if you need to, but I also in the same sentence said make it your own. That does not promote copying in the manner you speak of. He has creators block, meaning he is having trouble finding innovative ideas. Just saying "be innovative" is not going to help much when you have creators block. The point is trying to find a way to think of innovative ideas, and I think playing other levels could help with that process and maybe spark an idea. Name one level that is unlike anything we have seen before in gaming. You cant. Every level in LBP originates from some idea already created in the gaming world. What makes it different how it was altered. And borrowing successful practices is a great start to overcome creators block and ultimately form your own ideas. | 2013-11-02 21:55:00 Author: Rpg Maker Posts: 877 |
Me too! I've been on a creator's block for upwards of a few years. Anyway, my suggestion would be to not force yourself, but what do I know. | 2013-11-02 22:05:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
