The Stanley Parable

Archive: 14 posts

Hey everyone,

So I just bought The Stanley Parable on Steam which had 100,000 copies sold in 3 days and is currently 20% off at $12.99. I saw a video of the err. . . I can't call this a game, is just. . . gah I can't explain it! I bought it after watching the video and there is a demo too since it is not really a game so-to-speak. It's a Half Life 2 mod remastered in HD and is still epic as ever, its mind blowing and will mess your mind up. I'm about to play it tonight/ tomorrow but I thought you guys should try this err. . . experience out.

Make sure to try out the demo, and please try to avoid as much spoilers as possible because this is heavily a big wow reaction and should be experienced with a new face.

I bought this recently. It is brilliant. Leave this thread and just go buy it on steam. It is my personal game of the year, (even over GTA V.) It is rare to find laugh out loud funniness in a game but this has hours worth of it.2013-10-21 08:06:00

(even over GTA V.)

Coming from the guy who said he doesn't like GTA.

Anyway, I'll go check out the demo.

I definitively need to check this one out. I like the Half-Lifey feeling it's got. 2013-10-24 11:33:00

Great game, now going for that very prestigious "Don't play the game for 5 years"-achievement.

Also a funny coincidence that there is a South Park christmas episode with STAN being pushed around by the narrator. Just saying.

I bought this when it came out. Very interesting game, although I think it's a shame that the "main" storyline was such a close replication of the original mod. The alternate endings were very nice, but it didn't take long to get through all of them. There were a couple of places where I felt more choices would have been good. Like the option to actually ignore the Adventure Line™ and explore a bit more, or for different outcomes based on rating the narrator's game concepts etc. But I guess the point of the limited options in those places is to show that the choices don't actually matter in a Bioshock Infinite kind of way. The narrator is a great character and reminds me a lot of things I've done in a lot of my many unreleased, unfinished LBP levels.

I hope we see a sequel at some point, something a bit longer like the transition from Portal to Portal 2 would be nice. But whatever, I'll probably buy it whatever it turns out to be.

Just played the demo. I want to buy the full version.

EDIT: I played the demo twice since this "game" definitely has replay value.

Also, if you've played the full game but haven't played the demo, it might be worth it to try out the demo too. I doubt any of it is in the full game.

EDIT 2: I've played the game now. And wow. It's great.

I came here to say this. Stay inside the broom closet for as long as you can.

This game is a must buy for anyone who's amused by meta-humor.

This was the first thing I did when I got there.

Narrator: 'OH, DID U GET THE BROOM CLOSET ENDING? THEB ROOM CLOSET ENDING WAS MY FAVRITE!1 XD'

Exactly the way it appears in the subtitles.

I have played this game. Now, saying that this game is good is leaving it a bit short. However, saying that it's the best game in late memory (as it would compete with Bioshock Infinite and Grand Theft Auto 5) is stretching it just a bit too far. I feel like the uniqueness of this game has made people ignore the fact that the game is far from perfect. It's sort of like Heavy Rain in that sense: the game was so before its time that it showed in the lack of actually making the gameplay fun. Sure, it's an entirely different case, but the logic is the same. Just because the game is unique doesn't mean that it's a good game.

That being said, this is a very good game (infinitely better than Heavy Rain for sure) and I suggest it to everyone who wants to try something new. I have found out that this game is nearly impossible to talk about gameplay-wise without completely spoiling it, so I am not going to talk any more about this. If I was going to criticize the game, it would probably be 7/10, or 8/10, if I was going to give it another extra point for being unique.

And as Monkey said above, the game is indeed very interesting.

I agree. I wouldn't call it the best game of the year.

Still it's a great fun game worth buying, but
I felt the game was too short. There's a lot of stuff that the narrator says, but you get this false sense that there's a lot of more endings than there really are. There's honestly not all that many choice areas with a lot of them more like "hey, you can go here for a little voice over before you get bored and walk away or restart", but there are a decent amount for the price of the game. Overall playtime is not all that long. It's easily possible to play all of it in a few hours. Then if you want to play the entire game you have to Google the other endings/choices in the game that you would've never known about. I eventually found a flowchart that had all of the endings on it, and it made me think, "What's that ending? I had no idea you could jump out of that window; it looks exactly like all of the others." and things like that.

If you're interested in the flowchart, here it is: http://shadohs.be/StanleyParable.pdf
