Help with emitters needed

Archive: 6 posts

I read in the manual that emitter can make object appear and... disappear if you want.

Ok, how the hell I can do it?

Maybe I misunderstood the manual, but it seem like it tells you can make the emitter work backwards (also the video tutorial said so, but never explained how to... or at least the italian version...).

I haven't that option in the emitter menu.

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance, this question really bothers me!

no basically an emmiter will just make somthing appear, you can set the objects "lifetime" so it will disappear when the time runs out. you can also set how often the object is emmited, make it have velocity (direction is the line between the emitter and the object, set how many can be emmited at once, and how many can be emmitted forever...

the emmitor wont however make an object disappear unless its somthing it emmited.. to do that i sugest making the object out of desolve material and have some kind of switch attached.

In order to make something disappear via an emitter you have to place the emitter on a moveable object (say the end of a piston), and make sure you set the lifetime to infinite, the max number emitted to infinite, and the max emitted at one time to one.
Now lets make something disappear shall we?
The best way I've found to do this is to attach a piece of cardboard to a piece of dark matter somewhere far off screen via a piston ( min dist: 1.0, time : 0.5) Next set up the switch that will be used to make the object disappear. This should run through a permanent switch (directional) that will then make the piston contract. Next up place the emitter onto the fully extended piston and set the spawn point for your item. This is where it can get a little tricky, place a mag switch onto the cardboard, one shot, and wire it to the emitter. Now place the matching key both on the dark matter and on a small block that is inside the radius of the switch and will not move with the piston.

Here's how it works
When the level first begins the object will spawn into the level and things behave like normal, however when the switch is triggered it contracts the piston until it "sees" the key on the dark matter, far away from where it started. The key tells the emitter to spawn in a new copy of the object and since we can only have one copy at a time the old one dissolves while a new one is spawned in somewhere out of the way.

You may be a little confused, so I might make a small demo level if you want.

Demo level on the way!

Edit:
Its done, you'll find it off the California coast, don't forget you can search by authors by using the "@" symbol at the beginning of a text search. So look for "@TraderSam" and you will find me and this demo level. It may turn into a full blown "How-To" level if I put some time into it.
