So I've just started to learn music theory, and I started practising using LBP2's music sequencer. But there's one thing that confuses me. I get when you press square, you can change the key. I can see the effect it has, as the keyboard moves up or down accordingly. But what effect does it have when I change the scale? What's going on when I change it from chromatic into major, or into petatonic? I can hear it, but I don't know why the notes now sound different.

You should be changing keys naturally by writing your music in the key it was meant for. To adjust your scales it is better to physically move and adjust the notes to match the scale. I haven't fiddled with changing keys in a while, but the only useful thing I can think of using them for is to go above or below the allowed range of notes, but I'm pretty sure the samples just stop playing at a certain point.
