To tease or not to tease... that is the question

Archive: 7 posts

Do you think it's a good idea to post media of levels in progress shortly prior to the level's release, in order to advertise/hype its debut?

The advantage of teasers is potentially more exposure by the time your level is released. People have had a chance to see what you're working on and will decide if they want to check it out.

The potential drawback is that you're spoiling the fun by showing too much, or that if the level is not playable yet, that people will forget about it and will stop rechecking the thread for updates when it's actually released.

What do you think?

I think advertising is good, specially for projects that are long to finish. If you hook people on the premise and feed them some eye candy every once in a while, I think most will keep an interest in the project and jump at the chance to beta test or even play the thing once it's been released.

It also allows you to get some early feedback before anyone has had a chance to play the level, so you can quickly know if something is wrong and have a chance to fix it early on.

I think it can be a useful tool for sure. I certainly wouldn't want to see too many spoilers, but a few screen shots of something great that you've made or a beautiful looking level where photo's just don't do it justice could go a long way in keeping people's level of interest high.

As long as you don't do what they do in the film industry by showing all the best bits of your product in your ad, I think you would do well to advertise.

Well, I always talk about my levels in development in my blog and now in project threads as well.

But I do it for a different reason though, that being accountability rather than advertising.

When you are working on a hyper complex level with lots of fiddly bits, especially if you face major setbacks every now and then, it can be hard to keep going. I use my blogs and project threads to remind me to keep at it. People are interested in what I am doing, and I would not want to let people down on things that I just toss aside lightly.

It's a different reason to advertising though, but I guess the methods are very similar.

I think its a good idea, at least if it sounds/looks like a good level . Of course you should post the preview in the projects section and then when its done make another thread in the showcase, this will make people who see the showcase think: Oh this is the cool level i read about before, and then they'll instantly go to test it. If you just update the old thread when its done it will probably generate less plays and feedback.
And it wouldn't really spoil the experience, its not like that we anxiously have been waiting for you to complete the level. Especially when we don't know anything about it. Most of us already post screenshots and info about the level when we showcase it, telling us about the level before you publish it is just like having a showcase with a lot of more views and posts.
