Tear Away At Me!! [TearawayCompetitionUS]

Archive: 24 posts

This was a 3 week project I'd worked on for the Tearaway Competition. It's a very unique game and strays far, far away from all the other competitors by a mile. It features 7 different enemies, more will included in future updates. A saving system that allows you to come back at another time and continue where you left off. Saves your points, your hundreds of upgraded stats, waves and just about everything using a 20 letter input code, which you can acquire when you submit your score. Enemies get stronger in strenght and in health with each increasing waves, more will also spawn. You have 2 unique abilities to use to help you fend off the relentless waves, 2 more will be added later. Play up to 999 waves each lasting 1.5 minutes. Addicting gameplay. You have allies assisting you, upgrade them so they can help you better. Enjoy.

Eh, you Spotlight Crew are so predictable. It's an insult to me when you guys ignore me at every chance you get. Don't lie to me saying you queued my game, when you didn't. You didn't even bothered to play my level, let alone, ever post it as a Spotlight game. You guys have always treated me unfairly, as if I was the black sheep. I know Hyperdude played it, but Biorogue, you said you queued it twice on two seperate occasions, but not a single playthrough from you. Why is that, oh right.... LBPC hates LoVeRiCe and anything that has to do with him. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves. Pathetic excuse for a crew if you ask me.2013-10-02 18:33:00

Hey there,

I have only been in the Crew for a short time, but I can guarantee that we do not hate anyone on LBPCentral. We love to treat everyone with equality and respect - I know I try to - and if something fishy appears, there is probably a reason/misunderstanding behind it.

Regard bio queueing your level, I can tell you he has been VERY busy lately with other things and that we still have two weeks until the next spotlight debuts. I'm sure it is in his queue - as well in the queue of other spotlighters- and I can personally tell you that your level is very awesome and I really loved it!

You are not a black sheep or anything like that, you are a talented community member and your feedback on anything is greatly appreciated.

Take care,

This isn't really a fair statement.
Two of the crew played yesterday and bio hasn't been on in 6 days.
There may be circumstances that have prevented him from playing yet.
LBPC doesn't hate you to my knowledge.

Played my level/game or not, you guys have always and will be bias towards my game. No one has ever made a game like mine on LBP, not only is it unique, but it has a large amount of dept. Yet it's ignored and over-looked by your basic everyday platformers. Now why is that.... maybe because the whole Spotlight Crew loves nothing but platformers or friend-made games. There's always been that pattern and no matter how good my games are, it gets overshadowed by 2 day made platform projects. I'd like to see any one of you do half what I can do, bring your best creators. Cuz you guys are nothing but bias sacks.

EDIT:

You may be new Hyperdude, which is probably why you don't know the history between LBPC and me. I've exposed them many times of them playing favoritism for the Spotlight years ago, with facts and evidence. They have always ignored me since then on. They ignored Headman-1000, a multi-MmPicked creator and me before we started getting MmPicks. But the very second we got one, they started picking our games, when we had already good games before our pink ribbon time. I've been credited in countless MmPicks, cuz I'm not only over-looked by everyone else, but by you guys, Spotlight Crew as well. And yes, LBPC does hate me, they have banned me from every contest they have held I tried to participate because I was too good for the competitors.

Just to confirm, Hyper is not the only member of the crew to have played your level so far. In fact I think both fireblitz95 and I have played it as well. I have actually played your level twice (and hearted it) and was intending to return with my codes to see how that aspect of the game worked out. Your level was posted after the cut off point for Episode 121 (midnight last Wednesday) and so it is in the list of levels to be played for Episode 122 which will come out on 13th October, all things being equal. There's plenty of time yet for the crew to play and vote on it.

EDIT: Sorry my post crossed with yours. I can say categorically that you have not been banned from any contest on LBPC that I know of and I am a member of the contest crew as well as the spotlight crew.

With all due respect, loverice, I appreciate you are expressing your concerns but I have to disagree.

I have had the opportunity to play and judge levels on LBP2, LBPK and LBPV and I can guarantee to you that everything we have spotlighted so far were not all platformers or made by our friends. We treat each level with equal respect and leave our verdicts on what we think of the level. If the crew member has any concerns with a community member (as far as I know I never seen anything like that) that won't reflect judgement on the level being played and the verdict decided upon.

EDIT: I completely agree with you, lass!

Loverice-
Please let this thread stay about your level and the merits of it. Please don't turn this off topic or into an argument thread as it will have to be locked. We want you to have every opportunity to have your work displayed.

Hmmmm, I was banned from the 6 games contest where you can create, music, puzzle, shooter and I forget the rest. Made a Tower Defense game, but stopped because of ban and later because of Yellow Light of Death, R.I.P. my PS3 old fat edition. Banned from the "Time Travel" theme contest. Was making a Shmup game that allows players to shift the flow of time. Halted porgressed because I was banned and harassed by the LBPC mods.

On Topic, It's an insult to me when my game gets overshadowed by basic platformers, that takes very little to no skill at all to make, while I make very innovative game consisting of original and highly advance logic-works. But to be fair, if your statements are correct about me being late on the count for the Spotlight 121, then that's my bad, and if that being the case, then I am truly sorry. But still I feel that LBPC hates me for my history with the site.

You're level was late on the count of 121 and is in the list of levels to play for 122. It's ok, it was a misunderstanding and these things happen.

Regarding the LBPC Mods and being banned from contests, I think lass is right when she said you were never banned from any contest and you should definitely enter the contests from now on since your entries will be enjoyable to play.

Just to set the record straight, the first contest you mention sounds like it was the LittleBigLand contest (called 4-in-1 or something similar. Anyway, it was not an LBPC contest). You were never banned from LBPC10 - the time travel one. The mods made it clear that despite your differences with them, you were not actually barred from entering the contest. However, I'm not sure going over these details helps in any way tbh.

I can though assure you that your level is being considered for Episode 122 and I can see that you would be upset if you hadn't realised where our cut-off point falls. As Hyper says, it sounds like it was a misunderstanding.

you're pretty predictable yourself, you know that? Why don't you wait until AFTER the episode comes out to start your whining, name calling and general unwarranted complaining? You posted your level on Thursday, Sept 26. Levels that are posted between Sept. 26 and Oct. 9, will be eligible for Episode 122 which, barring any unforeseen circumstances, should be published on Oct. 13. So you have no clue as to whether or not your level will be featured at all. Because once again, as is your nature, you have completely jumped the proverbial gun. I said I queued your level and that's exactly what I did. Take a look at my recent activity hero. How long since I've played LBP? Go on, go look. Six days. I haven't played in six days! What is the queue used for? I know! It's used so that you can play levels at a later date, when it is CONVENIENT for you. Here lately, it has not been CONVENIENT for me. I have a wife, kids and two jobs. Between work, various practices/games, FFA, 4-H, various Booster Club meetings, livestock to manage, etc, etc, etc, after all that, my play time is limited. So I'd appreciate it very much, if you wouldn't come on here and call me a LIAR and that we are "pathetic." Have a nice **** day.

EDIT: I see my fellow crew mates posted before I could. I'm glad they're a little nicer than I am.

That's completely irrelevant. There's no criteria for judging levels based on perceived skill in making them. Just because you're biased towards that type of level doesn't mean the Spotlight crew need be.

But still I feel that LBPC hates me for my history with the site

I think you grossly overestimate the amount of thought anyone from this site actually allocates to you.

I was banned and harassed by the LBPC mods.

You, and only you, got yourself banned on PSN for sending myself and jwwphotos a stream of obscenities, which I warned you not to do for exactly that reason. Instead of rationally discussing your situation here with one of us, you took the cowardly route and lashed out over PSN, and paid the price.

It's no ones fault but your own.

My advice to you: grow up, act like an adult and stop blaming everyone else but yourself for your behavior. We don't need any more drama queens around here.

Ok.. that is enough.

In case you forgot, this is the level showcase. It is for showcasing this level by loverice. Any other conversations not concerning feedback to this level, take it elsewhere.
..and have a nice day.

Looks like a really cool level btw. You really should add some photos to show it off a bit more.

Well this was interesting. Like JW said, you should add some photos to help promote your level. I took the extra step of going to LBP.me to look at what pictures were out there and found enough there to entice me to check this out. It’s now in my queue, but I want to post a disclaimer that I’m not sure when I’ll get to it due to real life obligations.

I also want to state that I respectively disagree that build time, logic, level type, etc. make any level/game better than another. I will agree that I also see a lot of levels that don’t interest me, but with 7 million or whatever it is published, that’s to be expected. In the end it all comes down to personal taste and my personal wow/respect factor is all mine for the most part. Lastly, from what I know of the Spotlight Crew they are awesome folk and do a commendable job trying to keep up with all the levels here. I honestly have no idea how they do it, but my hats are off to them.

I played this level several days ago and came away with quite a few pleasant surprises. It was evident right away from the menu that this creator had some skills. I really though the level updates option on the menu was a great idea. I’m sure someone has done this before, but I loved it and need to figure out how to incorporate this myself going forward. The various upgrades and presentation of such were great and the option to come back and play where you left off was genius and it seems to be something I’m seeing a little more of these days. It would be nice if there was a way to access my photos in the level and see the screenshot of the code I saved. Maybe if the code wasn’t so extensive it would be easier to recall? Either way, I applaud you for implementing such a feature. Now for the gameplay… I think you nailed the characters, and the retro gameplay idea. However, everything went wrong for me with the speed/pace of the level in combination with the screen viewing area. I think if there was a way to condense this down into a view where you could see the whole thing on one screen that would help tremendously. Worst case, removing the horizontal scroll would be of great benefit to the player. As far as the speed/pace goes, I thought the enemies took far too long to spawn and then when they did, my shooter was not very responsive (yes I know there are upgrades). I just felt like it often didn’t shoot exactly where I said shoot. Maybe less upgrades on more firepower/enemies to start? I’ve only played one other Tearaway level, so I can’t speak too much for the contest quality as a whole, but I thought this has to be a pretty solid entry for sure. Nice work on the menu, character design and logic here. I would be happy to play this again and provide more detailed feedback if you wanted. I kind of feel bad trying to leave feedback, when it’s been several days since I last played it. I know I’m missing at least one more thing I really wanted to comment on… Good luck.2013-10-09 23:10:00

Feedback is always appreciated. The photo idea was self-debated, I disabled the option to use the pop-it because I didn't want players popping themselves, but I will update it after the contest and allow it so you can pull out the photo and paste it by the code input screen. But it takes only 30 seconds to write the code down on a piece of paper. Takes just under a minute to input the codes as well. The game is not fully balanced because I did planned on adding more enemies, allies and specials. But I assure you, the further you get into the game, the more fun and crazy it gets. I made the screen and gameplay area that big for good reasons. If it was smaller, people wouldn't have to roam the map to kill enemies, they would just simply place it in one spot and camp, which would make for a monotous game. Upgrading your mail spread goes a long way. Harder to aim at first, but once you get 3 spread shots or more, the game gets a lot more easier to maintain.2013-10-11 19:31:00

Sorry i have been unable to test this yet but i have to redownload all the patches to the game before i can start playing and its just time consuming. I really want to test this one out along with about 15 other levels in my queue but my corrupted profile is preventing me doing so.

I have sort of ignored LBP2 lately and vocus on LBPVita but will definately play this level when i have all the patches installed and i am able. Hopefully this time the corruption of my profile will be cleansed.

I played this earlier and get the feeling there's way more to it than I'm seeing. I just didn't understand it. Pressing the left right back buttons didn't seem to do anything, and I couldn't seem to get past the first level.

Maybe some instructions would help. If I'm missing something I apologize.... My son and I sat there working with it for a while and couldn't figure it out. I scrolled back and forth shooting at the enemy but couldn't seem to hold them back for very long. After a bit, some of the enemies would reach the bottom and kill me. I never made it far enough to get points to buy upgrades.

This may be the first time I've been dumbfounded by a level....

Because of the game's first initial start up, which was slow pace to allow players to understand the game, I had to update the game for a more faster pace. It now starts at Wave 11 and I've given both the power strength and firerate of your main weapon to level 20. So hopefully that will help out. In order to survive a wave, you have to keep your eye out for enemies. You notice the "!!!" sign along the border of the screen, this sign indicates the location of an enemy. The back shoulder buttons, L2 and R2 are used for your Special Abilities, which are The Mighty Finger and The Breathe. Which practically represents the Player's finger and Player's breathe when he blows into the Vita. The finger is strong, but has limited range, which it can only pop up in the middle of the map. The wind on the other hand, does no damage to enemies, but help push them back, good for when huge groups of enemies are close to your baseline. In order to use these, you'll have to wait for them to cooldown. They have a bar at the bottom-left of the screen. Once it's full, it'll wiggle around representing that it's ready for usage. You can buy upgrades for the cooldown, making them charge up much faster. It's a very deep game, you just have to give it enough time to enjoy and appreciate the game.2013-10-28 10:37:00

Cool! I'll check it out again tonight. It definitely looks like my kind of game. It's too bad peoples attention span is too short. It would have been nice to have that "learn" time.

EDIT:

OK, I played this last night for quite a while. Once I understood what I was doing, this became one of the most addicting levels I've ever played. And that isn't hyperbole - I sat mesmerized playing this for about 2 solid hours, with my son sitting next to me equally focused. Each time I gained more points, he wanted to see what effect buying more power-ups would have.

Each time I increased my abilities, the game became more fun. But, with each new wave the enemies became stronger and faster, so managing resources also factored in. VERY cool!

This level is pretty deceptive. It appears as a simple shooter, but has quite a bit of depth.

There were a few things I should mention that confused me at first that could be worked on, however. Now that I look back on it, these were the main reasons I initially couldn't figure out the game:

1. You provided the controls for the finger and the breath, however I had no idea what triggered them. After playing for a bit I realized there were 2 meter bars at the bottom that, when powered up completely, enabled these abilities. When I first tried to use these and nothing happened, I gave up. One thing that could help here is if you try the buttons, using a "failed" sound and having that meter change color. This would tell the player that what they were trying to do won't work because the meter isn't full.

2. In the purchase screen, I had no idea the actual points accumulated in the game were the points I was using to purchase things. This is because the points in the game (being displayed in a bubble in the upper left) are completely different than the digits used to display the power-up values. I didn't make the connection, so when I was originally trying to play I looked around the screen and couldn't tell what I could purchase. Eventually I figured this out, but I would expect a value at the bottom to say "Current Points". I know this is a big deal to add, so I would at least recommend some text saying "Purchase power-ups using your current score."

3. Manual firing - turning off auto firing and instead using the X button didn't feel right. It had a squishy feel to it since it simply enables a delayed fire. Having it fire as soon as you press the X button would have given the player more precision.

Great stuff, though - I plan on going back to this many times.
