Keyboard with touch controls?

Archive: 12 posts

Hey there everyone

So I was thinking of releasing a keyboard the community could use to easily add words to their levels. I have an idea of how to use touch tweakers and emitters to bring in letters but there's a couple of things I can't quite figure out:

-I want people to be able to make custom fonts and use them with the keyboard
-I want to be able to press "enter" to go to the next line

Wanna help me? Add me on psn @ShadowArcticWolf

Peace

EDIT:

Just a little status update. I got all of the keys to work! (They don't emit letters yet though) I also attempted to use a method in which you hold down the "shift" key and tap a letter, you know to change the case (There's a caps lock key as well, it works). Multi-touch with this doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions

Not sure about the shift key problem, but i would suggest using wireless tags and sensors so that people could create their own fonts. For example you load a microchip into the keyboard, with an emitter for each individual letter, number or symbol in the font and the emitters are triggered by wireless tags on the keys. This way one keyboard will work with any font microchip, as long as it was made in the template that fits your keyboard2013-09-27 19:41:00

Hey there

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll be sure to try using tags to add fonts.

Hey Everyone

Below are some screenshots of the keyboard. All of the coloured keys are currently working. You can see that the color scheme is changable. There is still work to be done, though. The user cannot easily select the font they have put into the keyboard (they would need to tamper with the logic, which is not ideal). I do have an idea of how to do it, though. Please excuse the horrible placeholder font shown. It will be there until I take the time to create a nice-looking font. If you have any suggestions about the design/logic, fell free to leave them.

ah sweet man, this is gonna push me to finish some of the incomplete fonts i have hanging around on my moon atm. hopefully i should have one or two done which you can publish with your finished keyboard.

also if you need help with the interchangeable fonts idea i might be able to lend a hand to your logic if you like.

Hehe, I've seen much worse fonts than that... on my moon . Seems pretty cool though as I really wanted a vita version of this. Also it seems to make a lot more sense with touchscreen!

Looks great! I thought about doing a keyboard myself, but I guess this will spare me the work Maybe I can also provide you two fonts if you need or want them.2014-01-03 16:40:00

Thank for all the support guys

BTW I based the design off of alienware keyboards

EDIT:

Hey Everyone

I need a suggestion. Right now, only the cursor itself moves to create the letters, as all of the emitters are in a microchip on it. This method has a disadvantage, though. Typing more than two or three words will cause the cursor to move off-screen, and therefore make it harder to check for spelling errors. To remedy this, I thought of making the entire keyboard move, not just the cursor. They're both easy to accomplish, but I wanted to know what you guys thought. I also need help with backspace. I want users to be able to erase the last 1-3 letters they typed. Any suggestions?

i think moving the keyboard should be fine. the only difficulty in that case would be if you wanted to add an enter button which made a new line, because you would have to measure the distance from the first character and then move backwards... but whatever.

i would like to help you with the backspace problem though, if you explain a little more about how the letters are actually emitted it might be easier to help though. without knowing how your logic is set up i dont know if i can be much help.

Each of the emitters are activated with a tag sensor. Each tag is activated when the corresponding key is pressed. There are are also a few basic logic gates somewhere along the lines to detect whether the shift or caps lock keys are active or not. All of the emitters are in a microchip which is on the cursor, not the keyboard. If you'd really like I guess I could show a screenshot of the logic, but this is pretty much how it's set up.2014-01-11 20:34:00

cool.
i was thinking each letter has a tag and a destruction tag on it, both of which are triggered when you press the backspace button,
when it is pressed a tag on the cursor turns on which is detected on the letter and triggers the destructor, and also tells the cursor that the letter has been destroyed and the cursor should move backwards one space. this way you can only move the cursor backwards as far as the first letter.

ill try and make a diagram or something cos it's late and i am finding it hard to explain myself clearly haha

I'm going to preface this by saying I'm feeling nauseous and exhausted, so my grammar won't be the best

There I was, putting up some finishing touches when my vita crashed and my lbpv save file corrupted. Guess that'll teach me to regularly back up. Anyway a couple of other projects I have didn't get too badly damaged since my goodies back remained intact, but since the keyboard was stored in a level, it's gone forever now...
So it's time to start anew. If you like the old design or have you're own idea (in terms of looks) I'd like to hear your opinion.
The point is, this project will take longer than expected, and a couple of other projects, mainly the zelda remake, so I'm sorry for that. To make up for this, I'll make the keyboard even better than it was originally planned to be.

Have suggestions? Send them my way!
