Making a very Deus Ex Human Revolution inspired level

Archive: 48 posts

I played that game a few months ago and was just amazed. I also just adored the setting, so I decided I would make a level inspired by it.

So it's going to be a straight up platformer though. No shooting elements will be involved unless I think of something that would be really cool. There will be some form of stealth in the form of dodging security cameras and whatnot. I'm not planning on adding some kind of cloaking system. I'll save that for another level.

Here are some screens of the work in progress.

http://ia.api.vita.lbp.me/img/ft/99ac3002bcf6435c24290bf5c2dc9708b5cdb88d.jpg

I tried to base that part a lot off of Adam Jensen's apartment.

I also copied this door lol

Even though it may not be super close to looking like Dues Ex HR, i'm definitely getting my inspiration of the design from it.

I also already re-composed a few pieces from Dues Ex. These ones

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6WjSPp4gA4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAljZX-9HMI

These are the ones i'm going to get to composing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mClbxsB3nI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tAqA-ky2K0&feature=player_detailpage#t=36 (That one i'll probably spruce up a bit so the really quiet melody around 45 seconds is more prominent)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eiShGVUzqo

Every song will have it's own spot to play at. Well at least 4-6 depending on how long I make it, but that all depends on the slowdown that takes it's toll on my level. I'm planning for it to have 2 parts though.

So any Deus Ex HR fans have an ideas for me? I'd love to hear them. I have a good amount of ideas already but I'd be happy to hear suggestions =)

Thanks. Oh did I say pure platformer? More like a platformer/puzzler.

Here is an update on my progress.

Well since I am taking inspiration from Deus Ex... I needed lots and lots of vents. So I made a system where you can tap on the vents to open them and walk through them.

http://ib.api.vita.lbp.me/img/ft/4eba333e7a7757365f0a89ff14b123db187c1d94.jpg

Also, I remade the logo that you can find on the Deus Ex security cameras.

http://images.wikia.com/deusex/en/images/2/2a/Camera-hr.jpg

Lastly, I tried to remake the desktop you find on pretty much all of the Deus Ex HR computer terminals.

Not exactly it but ehh... Doesn't need to look exactly like it.

EDIT

Made some updates to the lighting. I think I like this look better but I'm not sure.

The screenies look amazing, I just hope the level won't lag like your previous one. It would ruin the gameplay. 2013-09-22 11:22:00

Yes I am EXTREMELY conscious of that. I don't even like playing my previous level myself because of that problem =[. I'm so paranoid of that right now. I rarely had to worry about that in LBP2. In my previous level, everything was optimized to the MAX. 95% of everything was disconnected, emitters only worked if you were in vicinity, etc... Although I had to go back and do that afterwards (yes it was even worse). I've been building that way with this level the entire time and i'm glad to say it runs very smoothly so far. At the hint of slowdown though, I'll consider just putting a level link. This level benefits from not having nearly as much detail on screen as my last one (environments are smaller in general, cameras aren't zoomed out nearly as much) so I'm in much better shape now than I was then.2013-09-22 16:08:00

Yea I know that feeling. Everything you do to keep the visuals top-notch, with lots of detail, just the thermo and lag stands in your way. I'm totally obsessed with lag and there's no way I could publish a level that has laggy sections. I also like making stuff with complicated design. I'm planning to split my level in two or even three parts since there is a lot of motion. It's pretty hard to keep a level lag free. I just want to wish you good luck on your project, I hope that you manage to achieve your goal.

Oh, and the funny thing is, it's not even the thermo that's the problem. In part one of my previous level, hardly a 3rd of the thermo is filled up... So don't even know... =|

Did it have scenery? Uh... I'm not sure I understand that question, lol.

My charger broke about 2 weeks ago (And I JUST got that one) so the level has been put on hold. I'm getting a new charger over the weekend though so it'll be worked on soon.

I usually don't care for stories in LBP levels. This level kinda has a story, but it's not forced. There are TV's and radios that you can turn on that all say something about "Synergy Industries" (I used that name because that's the name of his dream company that he wants to run lol). If you turn on the TV at the beginning it says something like "Synergy Industries is working on a top secret experiment" and I tried to make it look like a news headline. The rest of the TV's/Radios throughout the level just elaborate on it further. I do that just to kind of build up the location, and then I will make it so you actually infiltrate it at the last 3/5ths of the level.

I got a new charger yesterday and I am now nearly done with part one of the level (Which pretty much just serves as a tutorial with fairly simple obstacles using my gimmick). Now I just have to spruce up the last couple rooms a bit and add an elevator that will serve as a level transition.

I need some beta testers. It's late, i'm tired, so i'm just going to paste this post I put up on a different website. Sorry i'm not exactly talking directly to you guys at the moment lol

I would like some beta testers I'm only done with part 1 of the level (which pretty much just serves as the tutorial to introduce the fairly simple mechanics I have set in place) but I would really like some feedback here. Anything to help. It's fine if you can't think of anything super constructive; I just mostly need to know if you get stuck or confused on any part, whether it is for the slightest time or not so I can try to adjust accordingly. I have a lot of my RL friends play it and they always seem to get stuck at the most simple things (Or the parts I think are simple). That could be because they don't have the LBP instinct though.

Anyway, any kind of feedback is appreciated. Seriously, it could be the pettiest thing. What is petty for you may be a problem for others and I would like people to at least get past the tutorial =]

Here is the Beta Portal http://vita.lbp.me/v/fgwzm (Queue this level to get access to the level that needs to be tested)

And here you can see screenshots of the level that (hopefully) you will be testing http://vita.lbp.me/v/f7t1-

Oh and the pictures make the level look wayy darker than it really is, but if you do find it to be too dark than please tell.

Edit: Last thing. Id also like to know if you experience any noticeable slowdown Thanks

Can't enter the level link((( It writes: this level is not available in offline. I restarted level many times, but this is not solve the problem. Does anyone know how to deal with this glitch? This bug I see very often(((

Maybe you need to add the level key to your "Beta Portal"? (That way I can go to the Beta level from your planet)

I'm making good progress on part 2. I'm not going to spoil as many screenshots as I did in part 1, but I'd still like to share some.

http://i2.api.vita.lbp.me/img/ft/ca2649a20727302972f4078a390caa29d8e6b0e9.jpg

http://i7.api.vita.lbp.me/img/ft/b4735f6b340d80a4acc1030714e3445a5951b99f.jpg

The amount I have done of part 2 now is around the same length of part 1 (for those who've tested it.) Planning on making it 2X as long as it is now.

EDIT: Actually, just to test the length so far, I placed the song from part 1 in what I have of part 2. In part 1, I can speedrun to the end in a couple seconds after the song loops once. In part two, by the time I speedrun through the content i've made so far, the song has almost looped twice. So there's that.

I've also gotten these two songs recreated.

I just have 2 more sections to go for this one, and for these two, I actually know exactly what i'm going to make as opposed to wingin' it like I do with 90% of the obstacles I make

It's about 2.25 times longer than part 1 at it's current state.

Only one more platforming section to go, and then the ending sequence.

Oh crap... I just remembered that I need to save all of the sections and do the emitter trick to stop slowdown. There is only noticible slowdown at two parts though, and minor slowdown at another (Nothing is as bad as it was in my Cybershock level thankfully). The rest plays fine, but still. I want it to play as smoothly as possible at all times. I made the sections in anticipation of this so it shouldn't be too hard to do.

And here's an updated screenshot of the area in the pic I posted above.

http://i0.api.vita.lbp.me/img/ft/e60b164d250ee151eeb4710c56dcb81c80c84a26.jpg

Just a little more detail. Again, I don't want to spoil too much. I mean, I don't know if anyone really cares that much anyway but just in case.

Well actually, I think I may need to get people to test all of my parts. Maybe only a few members here though... I just want to know if anyone found anything too confusing, or too dark.... It's going to be a big project and I don't want little stuff that could easily be fixed/altered ruin it for people.

Done with part two. Now I have to make a minigame that involves listening skills for a school project that's due on Monday. After that, I get right back to this!

Here are a couple more screenshots.

I just recently realized how big this project is actually going to be. It will probably be as long as a whole section in story mode... Except maybe without the minigames. It's going to have 5 parts.

Oh hey man! I'd be glad to help with anything that you need at all. I'm actually what I'd consider a logic master, which would be... T"he ability to imagine anything, and make it work the way you want." So if you need beta testing I'm in. Always love playing other people's levels. Just out of curiosity do you have LBP2? Part two is available to beta test for anyone who goes through the "Beta Portal (http://vita.lbp.me/v/fgwzm)." I'll end up putting all of the parts up so people here (and whoever else happens to come across the Beta Portal) can test it before I actually release it fully. I don't know if you would rather wait until it's all done and play it all at once though, but it's fine either way.

Really quick feedback!

I absolutely love the visual style! While some areas are too bright
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3688/11144631576_8d78588a6f.jpg
and some too dark (no pic), the overall style is pretty great. I do think that some animations are missing (like turrets should flash when killing you or do something.

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3722/11144662044_2ebd5ca46c.jpg
I was stuck forever on this area because I couldn't see the stair entrance.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5538/11144777693_d560c9052f.jpg
I was slightly annoyed that I had to go drag the bouncing thing back after I just ran from over there. I know it's small but I definitely sighed.

That's perfectly fine =). As long as I get a few people to give me some feedback then i'm good.

Really quick feedback!

Thanks for the feedback! Can you try to tell me which area you thought was too dark?

I can't really add any of those animations or anything else extra at all because this level is literally on the verge of being noticeably slower. I can try to add some way to get up there and hit that button without needing that bounce pad though. It does seem like a little superfluous the way it is now....

Oh and i'll try to make the beginning more clear as well. I actually have that part altered on the level save that I have on my moon. Actually I have a couple of things altered. I just didn't bother to update the beta versions with the changes/bug fixes.

I think it was that hologram material on the wall making that scene too bright, so I lowered it down a bit. I altered the part you were talking about so you don't have to drag the bounce pad over there to hit the button, and I also made it much easier to see the stairs.

In the meantime, here's another image of part 3.

All I have to do is add an ending sequence that transitions to part 4 and I'll be done with part 3! Well there are still some bugs I have to work around though...

Last image from part 3

http://i5.api.vita.lbp.me/img/ft/c75e61043e38ba72654ca303e251b6d995808052.jpg

EDIT:

Part 3 is done and ready to test! I also finally updated part 1 with the bug fixes. For some reason though, it feels like it runs even slower than before now =|. I'll probably end up doing a lot to fix that eventually. With part 3, I didn't even have to use the emitter exploit to help with the performance. The level runs well without without it =D. I'm thinking it's because I relied more on decorations than cutting plain surfaces into separate parts to look less empty. So apparently, decorations don't do as much to the performance as adding extra sections. So I may go back to part 1 and even some sections of part 2 to combine some sections and add decorations and see if that actually helps the performance.

Part 2 is mostly fine, but if it doesn't work for part 1, then I have a lot of work to do on that. I'm actually thinking of making this longer. I actually have a bunch of fresh ideas in my head, and I work WAY faster when I know exactly what i'm going to do next. I introduced 2 new gameplay mechanics in part 3 that will help give the rest of the level more variety. I even have a few other ideas for new mechanics to introduce in part 4 too, but hopefully that will be the end of me introducing completely new things so I can just start expanding on those more. I have so many ideas in my head now.

The only reason I feel like I wouldn't want to spread this out too long is because I don't want this game to become completely irrelevant before I release this. Who knows though? I may be done with this quicker than I think I will at this rate, but i'm sure another drought will come.

Well I've made a TON of progress since the site went down.

Part 4 (which introduces laser refraction puzzles) is now complete!

http://i2.api.vita.lbp.me/img/ft/0c233b6d8b470701e8a79fb435b0c67905cf3b96.jpg

And yes..... Part 5 is also complete!

http://ia.api.vita.lbp.me/img/ft/a6aeecb1a9d298013429c5d9bd8b58446d6b6d11.jpg

http://id.api.vita.lbp.me/img/ft/02defa8c075df3cb982dcb4abc43d3e5b3129f37.jpg

I wanted part 5 to end with you going into the building, but I already had a section built beforehand that will go right before you actually go in. That part is so big that it actually slows down the rest of the level considerably. So i'll just put it in it's own separate part. Then it'll move on to part 7! (which I already started)

So yes. Parts 4 and 5 are up, ready to test. To access them, go here http://vita.lbp.me/v/fgwzm

EDIT

Part 6 is done and ready to go too. It only includes the transition between the outside, to the inside of the building. There's one big section there so I couldn't really put it into a level with anything else.

Those screenshots look stunning!

I would love to beta test these levels, but by the time I get a stable WIFI connection the final level will probably be out. Speaking of which, how many parts are planned? Is there any ETA on the final release? I'm really looking forward to seeing the completed project.

Great work so far

Great work so far

Thanks man. There will probably be 8 parts. After i'm done with the 8 parts, I'll still have to make the section select level. just a few weeks ago I thought I wouldn't be done until like March, but considering I got 2 parts done within 2 weeks, I doubt it should take me more than a month, month and a half TOPS. Unless I go on a super drought, then I should be good on time. I feel like I've improved so much since I first started this project. It took me so long to do everything in the early days because I always worried about the design and making sure everything looked good. Now, I just let let my mind and my popit throw up on the canvas and I already know things will come out looking good somehow... Lol. I'm just talking about aesthetics here.

Gameplay wise, in parts 1 and 2 I had no idea what I was going to do 80% of the time. Ever since about halfway through part 3, I've had so many ideas. The level creating process goes by so much faster when I know exactly what I want to do. While I was working on part 4, I knew what I wanted to do, it's just that I'd always kind of procrastinate on it because I think it'll be too much work or too hard to do. When I do finally get to creating it, it normally goes by smoothly. So part 5 was done in under a week just because I stopped holding off on things like that. I know exactly what I wanted to do, and I just did. I didn't waste time thinking about how hard it'd be, and it went way faster because of that.

Part 6 only has one really big section, so that was a breeze. I already have the whole schematic for every puzzle and platforming section that I want to have for part 7 in my head. I'm not sure what will be in part 8 though.... All I know is that it will end there...

Okay I have no idea why I felt the need to say all of this, but yeah. I'd give it maybe a month, or month and a half.

Sometime next month i'm hoping will be the latest date.

I've kind of slowed down a bit since I built my new PC. I've been working more on graphic design stuff. Actually my new years resolution was to make at least 1 new design every week. Oh yeah, I also got got Hotline Miami a few days ago and beat it yesterday. So that was taking up some LBP time.

Hey, I tested the first and second parts of your levels. Really great stuff! I did come across some slight breaks, though. I took screenshots of them for you to make them easier to find.

The first break was one of the little wheeled bouncy pads. The wheel broke off. It definitely didn't stop me from completing the level, but I just thought I'd let you know so you can fix it.

The second part was a hole in the floor. It's at the end of the second level. If you stay in the same layer as the plant thing and keep going right, you'll fall right through. This also didn't stop me from completing the level, as it's small hole that's not on the main path, but still. Check around the general area of where my arrow is pointing.

Can't wait to try the rest!

@rod Thanks for the play! I didn't know about the hole so i'll fix that. The wheel bouncepad thing is already fixed on the version that's on my moon.

@everyonewhocares Yeah i've realized that there are a lot of little things throughout my series so far that will get people stick or confuse them when I don't mean to. Things like people not knowing that they are in the mid layer so they can jump to the front, or not being able to see where to go or what platforms are safe (mainly the part 2 plasma square parts)... My friend just told me he was stuck on a relatively simple puzzle for 5 minutes just because he didn't know to use the touchpad to move the blue material. I guess I could see how that'd stump some people since that's like the only time I ever use the touch material in the series so far.... So next time I play, I have to go pack and fix all that stuff....

Oh, and some of the puzzles on part 3 I think may stump people too hard... Maybe i'm just underestimating the average LBP player, but I have a feeling that most people will quit on one of those puzzles... I'll probably have to go back and make so if they are stuck on it for a certain amount of time, i'll either let them skip it, or i'll give them an option to get a hint or something...
