Voice Acting (What Should I Do?)

Archive: 4 posts

EDIT: Alright, I guess I'll try and use my own voice. Don't say I didn't warn you, though!
If anyone has any more tips, you can still post them here.

I'm planning on making another small animation. It's about two guys, Jens and Tim, who aspire to become great ninjas when they sign up for a job at Ninjobs Inc. while at a local coffee shop. :hero:

My problem is getting the two lead characters' voices right; I have a choice between Speakonia (I think that's what it's called) and just my own voice.

Speakonia generates pretty robotic sounding voices that you can edit, like the built-in voices on PCs. I know this sounds pretty stupid to use, because the last thing people expect to be good at voice acting is a machine, but that's not the point right now. I just thought it'd sound pretty funny; to me, it just has this abnormal effect that makes a sentence that much funnier, depending on the subject. It's not completely flat and boring.

Or I could voice them myself. Honestly, I'm no Tara Strong, Grey DeLisle, or Pat Warburton, but I try. I'm not the most vocal guy, but really, with what I plan to make, I shouldn't take it too seriously. I do this for fun, after all.
Also, this is JUST for the two lead characters right now, so it's not going to be everybody.
Here's part of the script:

*Jens and Tim enter a cafe on a cold Autmn morning. They approach the counter, and the clerk asks them what they would like.*

Tim: Uh, yeah, can I get a freakin cheeseburger, please?
Clerk: What?
T: A cheeseburger, you stupid.
C: Sir, this is a cafe.
T: What?
*Tim walks out of the cafe and looks at the sign, reading "CAFE". He walks back in.*
T: I'm taking my business elsewhere.
*Tim slaps a cup full of coffee on the counter, spilling it.*
Jens: Tim, wait.
T: What?
J: We should become professional ninjas.
*Shot of a sign up sheet for Ninjobs Inc.*
T: Cool.
*They both sign their names, Tim's being huge and taking up all of the other spaces.*
J: Were we loitering?
T: lol yeah

It might go through some revisions as I work, but I'm pretty much done with it, It's a short video.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Ok, so I'm not voice actor but maybe I can still offer some advice.

Don't use computer generated voices, use your own voice, the computer generated voice may sound funny occasionally but that's because it will sound odd the entire time which isn't really a good thing. Unless you specifically want an odd robotic sounding voice, though even then I would suggested adding effects over your natural voice, or learn to speak like a robot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCVlwdz37nc)

The reason I say this is because using software to do the voices for you isn't going help you improve your skills. So you probably won't sound as good as you might like too, but that's ok, because the fact that you did it at all means you'll be better next time. Just make sure you're recording somewhere that you're comfortable enough to not hold back and use lots of energy and enthusiasm.

You'll feel much prouder knowing you did it yourself Good luck with it, and make sure to let us know when it's done!

Yeah I'd too suggest not using a robot voice, because doing it yourself (purposely terribly) is always funny. And everyone with a voice can be a voice actor, maybe just not as good as Mr. Warburton.2013-09-17 06:14:00

As Ironface and SR20DETDOG said, it just isn't advisable to use a robotic voice. It just falls flat, and honestly it seems lazy.

You can get away with amateur voice acting though, since... well, since you are an amateur. No one's going to expect an Annie or Emmy-worthy performance. If you deliver it in a tongue-in-cheek tone, it'll still be funny. If the jokes themselves are good, of course.

Look at Egoraptor's first videos. His voice acting back then was nothing special (neither were his animations, for that matter). He got a whole lot better since then.
