New level idea?

Archive: 8 posts

So I had have this idea for a while but I want to finish my current project and fully develop this before I begin.

Ok so, Im thinking that you will start at the lbp museum. Veering away from the tour group. You find yourself at one of the locked away treasures of this museum. The copying machine.
You think to yourself.. Its just an old copying machine, what harm can it do? Being the curious little sackthing you are... You turn it on.

Then, im thinking about making it go all crazy and sucking you in and throwing another one of you out the other side! This is all i really have for story ideas except little bits and pieces such as maybe you meet a mad scientist and he tells you that he can send you back in time and everything will be the same as usual! But maybe something goes wrong and he sends you back to different time periods... I dont really know yet but I think i could do some cool gameplay with one person controlling two sackbots... Thats all for now, Thanks for reading! Goodbye ^^

Sounds interesting, from a narrative perspective, but it seems you haven't figured out how to implement new and exciting game-play with it.
My humble advice is this: Exposition doesn't matter all that much and people barely pay attention to it anyway. If you want a good place to start when coming up with a good level idea, start with game-play, since that's what your main audience is there for.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! I have recently discarded this idea because I found out that two well known people are making the same idea... I think im just going to come up with a good idea then build a story around it... Thanks again 2013-09-21 19:21:00

That's generally the best way of doing it. Anyone can come up with a good story, but good game play is hard to come by, and focusing too much on presentation will limit your options quite a lot in LBP (thermo skyrocketing). Best of luck!

I approve of the story, but it would be too much like a single player ibb abd obb, with obb being an AI.2013-09-22 02:55:00

Hi Tyler SD.
It sounded like a really good idea my friend, maybe you can develop it a bit to be different, if you feel it infringes on other peoples ideas. A lot of respect to you for acknowlaging thier levels, but elaborate on the idea so its suitably unique.
Way I see it, lbp2 is made for people to be creative with thier ideas. Because so many levels have been made, its near impossible to make a level that in some way doesnt have elements similar to anothers ideas.
The key to making a good level is that idea that keeps recurring in your mind- thats what makes a strong level buddy.
in other words-
If you just sit down at lbp2 and say ,"ok, now i'll make a level about a rabbit." it will be a level that after the first day you'll lose interest in.
However, if the idea is strong enough, and you've been thinking about it a while, it will be something that you will have the interest to stick at.
Personally, i really like your idea.
My point is- If you have a level idea you feel is similar, but the idea is really strong- and with respect to others- make your level. They may never complete thier idea, but you might if its strong enough. Your level may have similar ideas in places, but your not copying, so its not the same level...and your level will be your idea. You shouldn't give up on your idea if you really want to make it mate
Just my opinion gang.

Hi TylerSD,

I totally agree with Sean! I've started to create a music-level and I had the idea to combine it with an underwater jump and run scenery (you know wreck, corals, fishes, canons lying in the sand and treasure chest etc. and hidden switches to activate the music sequencers) When the scenery has been done I accidentally played the music gallery of kevin-4244 (http://lbp.me/v/qnd-bbb) only to see that he had created a scenery which has been almost identical to my own concept!^^ Btw a fantastic music level! So I decided to cancel my idea because everybody would have thought that I would have copied his idea!^^ Some of my friends said that I should continue my level because the music would be more important than the scenery, but it didn't feel the same way as before!^^ But after thinking about it for a long time I had a new idea and I'm believing that this is even better than the first idea!^^ (still an underwater music gallery level but with a totally new gameplay concept!^^)
I'm telling you this just to say that sometimes when you are forced to see things from a different angle there can grow new ideas which sometimes can even be better then your first ideas!^^

Many greetings, Jürgen^^
