I'm Considering Going To Film School. Any Suggestions?

Archive: 16 posts

I just graduated high school back at the end of May and since have been sort of trying to decide what I want to do for the rest of my life. I've had too much going on the past few years of my life to decide before I graduated, but now my life is at a clean slate. I've considered video game development, programming and things along those lines, but they just didn't seem as appealing to me as film making. I'm not 100% sure about this, but it is at the top of my list of things I'd like to do, plus I'm not that much of a decisive person in the first place when it comes to things like this.

Anyway, I bought a camera with money I got for my birthday (I'm currently unemployed), and I've been having a blast with it. I bought the Nikon Coolpix L820, and I like playing with the high speed capability of it. I wish I could start making videos for YouTube, but I just can't really do that when I'm the only person available to run the camera and be the actor/actors. I like messing with not only the physical aspect of shooting videos, but also the computer editing side. I've mainly just been messing around with Adobe After Effects and a few other Adobe creative software tools, and it doesn't feel like it'd be a problem for me to learn if I would have to learn it.

So.. why am I posting this? Well, I really don't know where I'd go to school for this. I've looked at Full Sail University's Digital Cinematography online course, but Full Sail looks pretty expensive.

Does anybody have any suggestions for me about what schools I should consider?

Also, does anybody have any advice for me when it comes to film making in general?

What exactly are you planning to be? If you want to be a director, I don't think that would be a viable career path as I don't think there are lots of people who get to be directors. So if you're planning on being the guy who makes a multi million dollar movie, you may want to temper your expectations. My brother made a lot of movies in high school and now he seems to have realized being a director wasnt likely. Otherwise, Ive got nothing2013-09-10 13:20:00

You'll likely want to build a rig for the L820 to give it some more weight. See this video, it really makes a difference.

People who want to be the next Joss whedon often have to start right at the bottom of the chain and work their way up, even setting up the chairs for the company's meeting is enough to get started; from research I learnt that apart from contacts and a few basic skills, film school gets you very little. Just start making indie films and see where it gets you I guess, enter competitions, build a reel and start any work you can find in the industry. I was too scared to go into it from what I found out, but go for it if it's what you love ~2013-09-10 21:38:00

Yeah, I don't plan on being anything like a big shot movie director. I don't really want to be a director at all.

Actually, I don't think I really explained what I meant by wanting to get into film making. Basically, I just want to be a guy behind a camera who is just told what to film and nobody really knows who I am. Like that random guy 3/4ths of the way down a movie's credits for being the guy who operated the camera in scene 8 which nobody notices. Something like that just as something to do for a job that is something I wouldn't hate doing.

Film school is always a good idea, but often (generally, in any profession) people want real world experience (which can most assuredly help in getting a camera operating job.) Lots of people might tell you that a one person behind the camera crew is impossible but it's far from that, one person can do everything bar all the acting (unless it's a one person show, too) as people are all too ready to accept limitations, it can take a bit of time to prepare a shot and finalise the film/series, but if you have an idea, you can find a way to produce it. If you like or want to make a film or something, work with what you have and persevere, anyone can make a masterpiece if they have the time. And with editing, After Effects and Final Cut should be all anyone needs really. I sure am inspiring.2013-09-12 12:24:00

I went to film school for 6 months, and it wasn't for me. I went to Columbia College Hollywood and it was too expensive and the make you take these basic classes for super expensive prices. The people there wouldn't work with me because of my ideas and I only made 2 friends that moved away because it didn't work out for them either. This a business that you need to get know everyone...and I mean EVERYONE. The more people you know the more likely it will be that you get a job.

Since you want to be a director, that is something you need to have lots of money to do or create a movie so spectacular that every production company will want you to direct their movie. This is a very hard business to get into and will require lots of money. Think very carefully before applying to a college. Make sure you want this and don't give up on your dreams!

Okay, so I don't want to be a director. I do NOT want to be a director. I'm just starting to realize how dumb going to a school would be. I would love to go to a school like Full Sail if I came from a rich family who wouldn't care what they spent money on. It sounds like too much money for something that could be learned for free.

I'm just going to learn about video editing in After Effects on my own time for a while to see what I can do and if it's worth me trying to get a job doing it.

Lots of companies are always looking for good video editors. The main editor programs that are in use in the industry right now are AVID and Final Cut Pro. AVID is very advanced and hard to learn, so stick with the easier editors first before moving up. That is exactly what I did before the school. Final Cut Pro is user friendly, but it still is a bit costy. This program is only for Mac however.

After Effects is more for animation and graphics. Is this your aim?

I really don't know. I'm just sort of looking to see if I really like doing it.

My roomate is studying media production and he has the easiest homeworks... WATCH MOVIES then he has to write like 5 pages revies on em

seems like a fun course and you get the experience and knowledge of working with studio equipment (which is a good start point to get a job, given that you look for small volunteer work on school or around town before you graduate), although the real deal is on being director and getting to that requires, well talent!

Honestly my dream job would probably be to work for people like Rooster Teeth. Even if it's just editing videos for them. It's something I like doing.2013-10-04 06:24:00
