Ignition: Sovereign Falls

Here is the first race in a proposed trilogy concerning a fictional off-road event I created called the 'Ignition Festival', where 8 classes of vehicle battle it out across the toughest terrains and most challenging courses! Of course this is a blatant MotorStorm homage and as such I have worked really hard on trying to make each of the 8 vehicles feel distinctive and offer their own advantages and disadvantages for use. If it were possible I'd let you choose your own vehicle at start-up, but unfortunately it's not, so it's purely random* which one you'll start in.

* not that random though. If you choose 'play on my own' then you'll ALWAYS be in the Buggy. In order to sample a random vehicle each race you'll need to choose 'Play Online' instead. Don't ask me why but LBPK doesn't utilize a randomize function when you choose the first option, which is a bugger, to say the least!

A couple of tips for success:

- Not all the vehicles drive best taking the drifters approach. Certainly for the larger vehicles you'll have much more success by easing off the throttle to take the turns, this also helps keep up the top speed, which is crucial as this is a strength of theirs, to the detriment of the acceleration.

- The smaller vehicles (bikes especially) are very light, so if they get hit then they're much more likely to spin out or veer off course. All offset by superior handling and acceleration characteristics mind you.

- The alternate routes are designed to even the score between classes and provide more direct or trickier paths which can shave precious seconds when in certain suitable vehicles.

- There are NO weapons or boost pads, this is a race of skill and the idea is that you use the strengths of your vehicle to your full advantage. So trucks are good for bashing and crashing into others and generally being a bully whereas bikes and rally cars are quick and nimble enough to get out of trouble easily. The race is winnable with ANY of the 8 vehicles, you just have to learn how best to use them.

- There are 7 prize bubbles to collect on the track itself, and a further 3 as rewards for podium finishes. 3rd place net's you the Monster Truck, 2nd a civilian version of the Peugeot 205 GTi that the Rally Car is based on, and the winner get's a shiny new Dirt Bike. Loot the level and you'll end up with all 8 of the vehicle models used in the race for your own personal usage!

Anyway, enough yapping from me, please enjoy and leave feedback, it's always greatly appreciated. :-)

Awesome track, the detail on the vehicles is astounding. Even the environment is top notch, I love the river and the mountain in the background. I thought the rumble on the grating part of the bridges was a nice touch.

I played it twice online and got the dune buggy both times. It seems that the track is intended to be played without drifting, is that right? It took a couple laps of drifting to realize it wasn't working, and regular turning worked perfectly around the corners. Also, I just now (while typing this) realized that I didn't see any weapons; I suppose that's supposed to go along with the strict race atmosphere. Wouldn't it be cool if different vehicles had an inherent "weapon," that could be used on cooldown? Eh, maybe that's not in the spirit of the series, I'm just day dreaming here.

Anyways, fantastic job!

Hey thanks. Yeah, the 'randomness' of vehicle selection is infuriating to say the least, it certainly isn't foolproof but you're usually unlucky if the game dumps you in the same vehicle more than twice in a row. During the initial testing stage of the vehicles I did it with a friend online and after about 20+ consecutive races had managed to sample all 8 of the vehicles... I wish that the selections really were random, but I made sure that the buggy was the default vehicle as it's one of the easiest to drive and probably the vehicle model I'm most proud of to boot.

As for the handling and weapons... yeah, weapons were never intended, Motorstorm didn't have weapons and I didn't want this to either, I wanted the vehicles to feel like weapons themselves (the bigger ones anyway) but despite adding physics tweakers onto each of the karts the effects are not as I had hoped, limitations of the game I suppose. As for the drifting... well, the buggy, rally car, bike and ATV should all drift fine, although due to the increased size of the karts again the physics are a little ropey (due to the origin point of the kart chassis game physics I suppose), but the other four vehicles not so much which is fine, as a large Peterbilt style truck or a Humvee H1 isn't really renowned for their power-sliding abilities!

Anyway, thanks for your feedback, glad you enjoyed it!

Atheist, I have no idea how you made such intricate designs such as the motorbike's chain or even its front mudguard. Whenever I've tried making objects so small they've disappeared. I tried cropping them strands at a time, but there comes a point where they just vanish as if the game can't process something under a certain size. I guess you could make them larger, save the item, then reduce its size as a whole. Is that the way to do it?2013-08-31 13:10:00

I tried cropping them strands at a time, but there comes a point where they just vanish as if the game can't process something under a certain size. I guess you could make them larger, save the item, then reduce its size as a whole. Is that the way to do it?

The trick is just to make the whole vehicle large initially, then, once all the details are on, re-size it. Now, when you re-size a static object then you're usually limited how small you can make it, certainly not small enough to be an effective kart. But... they next trick is to simply capture the object, then go to your objects and place it again. You'll notice now that you can re-size it a lot smaller than before (to micro-machine size lol) so get it small enough that it can be a kart and place it down on your level.

Now, to avoid issues with hitboxes being larger than the actual model itself, make sure you only attach the rotate motors for your wheels (and any other pistons) once you've got it set to your wanted kart size and attach your kart chassis to a small piece of material (I use forcefield) and attach that to your kart model roughly in the centre of the model, then group it altogether.

You should now have a driveable custom kart with correct hitbox dimensions, but if you have an abnormally shaped kart (like my dirt bike or the Big Rig) then you may still get some odd collision issues. To fix this, simply add a 'kart size tweaker' gadget to the spawn point, and adjust it lower than 1.0. This will however mess up the default behind kart camera view, which can incidentally be changed within the global settings menu under 'Chase Cam Distance' (On this one it was set to 99%, the furthest back it can go). The bike and ATV had a kart size tweaker of 0.7, whereas the Big Rig was set to 0.5. I also had to create a custom game camera on the Big Rig spawnpoint as the default one was only letting the player see an extreme closeup of it's backside!

Ah, went off an tangent a bit there, sorry about that, but if you have any other questions please feel free to ask, more than happy to help.

Oh, and thanks for your nice review in-game, appreciated.

I finally played it....many times. With the monster truck, quad, buggy, rally car for the moment.
The feeling of the race is really good, some feeling of liberty in the nature like in the Motorstorm Serie. This point is very succesfull.
At first i was a bit disappointed because i think i expected too much of this track. I would have thought that there would be more different ways to take.( May be i didn't find out all of them but i think so)
But finally i runed the track many different times and it's great.
Now, i 'm gonna run it with the other vehicule and i'm waiting for the next track of the serie.
I really hope that it will be team Picked
Thanks for that track

Well I thoroughly enjoyed it ... Only just got LBPK via a new PS+ sub, no previous experience so I'm sure I don't fully appreciate all the technicalities but the kart designs in particular were amazing. Very generous of you to share them. Will keep an eye out for the next.2013-09-07 21:00:00

Thanks for making this track atheistsw, I said in my review that this level is a master piece in every respect. The kars are amazing and perfectly detailed, the scenery is wonderful and very realistic. You've done a great job my friend, there are not levels like this in lbpk, no more perfect kart or more detailed traks. 2013-09-09 16:27:00
