RPG Suggestions

Archive: 11 posts

I've just recently gotten into the RPG genre, and have been wanting to find more games to play in that genre. I recently beat Tales of Xillia (great game btw), but now I can't find any other ones. What are some of the best RPG games to play? the only systems that I don't have are any Xbox systems and a Gamecube, and I am fine with any sub genre except tactical/strategy RPGs.2013-08-24 00:33:00

Tales of Graces. Battle system is a million times better than Xillia.

When it comes out, you'll NEED to get Tales of Symphonia Collection. Symphonia is, by far, my favorite game OF LL TIME. Along with Tales of the Abyss. Which you could get for PS2 or 3DS.

Otherwise, get the Kingdom Hearts Collection next month.

Otherwise, Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy 10 are all awesome. Also, Xenogears. Though honestly, I don't really understand that game myself. It just throws a bunch of stuff at you, you don't really get it, then you're blown away by the end :/

Yeah, I personally don't feel the game has aged well. It's heavily influenced by Gnostic religious dogma, though it also happens to be clock full of assorted Judeo-Christian references, many of which aren't really relevant to the story at all (a personal pet peeve of mine). The game also suffers because the dev team all but blew their budget by the time the second disc rolls around.

As for my own recommendations, since I'm operating under the assumption that you have ready access to PSN I'd suggest you try out the first Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Breath of Fire IV all of which you can get off it.

Parasite Eve is arguably one of the most unique RPGs made by Squaresoft though to be fair it's actually based on, and technically a sequel to a Japanese horror novel. Compared to most jrpgs that take place in a fantasy world with sword n' sorcery turn-based gameplay, PE takes place in modern day (well, 1998 ) New York with customizable firearms and a hybrid real-time/turn-based combat system. The game also features one of the most beloved female protagonists in videogames in the form of Aya Brea, a non-fanservicy heroine who does possess a degree of human frailty without coming off as weak but at the same time is highly competent though not overly so (incidently, I cannot recommend the latest PE game, 3rd Birthday because it pretty much completely undoes all of that). It's main flaws are that the game is kind of short (though it does have a New Game+ feature with bonus dungeon) and while biology plays a heavy role in the game's story, it's largely nonsense.

Final Fantasy Tactics is in the running for my favorite FF title; as the name suggests it's more a tactical/strategy game than straight rpg and completely unlike the other FFs outside that later FFT spinoffs. It features highly intricate and tactically diverse gameplay that allows for the utilization of any number of playstyles as well as an incredibly complex plot full of political intrigue, manipulation and tragedy and the soundtrack is also absolutely fantastic. The main flaws with the game are its steep learning curve, uneven localization, and the fact that there are many ways, particularly late in the game, to completely destroy any semblance of difficulty.

Breath of Fire IV is obviously the fourth installment of the Breath of Fire franchise, and many would argue it being the best and you don't have to worry about having not played the first three at all. It's another turn-based RPG what was made late in the PS1's lifecycle though it features many innovations other rpgs wouldn't pick up until the next generation such as member swapping and combination attacks as well as including some of the BoF franchise's signature gameplay features such as fishing, apprenticeship, and the trademark dragon transformations. The plot is also quite good, seamlessly alternating between being whimsical, disturbing and gutwrenching with a distinct dual-narrative structure. The main flaws, I think are that while it was more innovative than many rpgs of the time, it falls a bit short on some of the more basic bells and whistles you'd take for granted at the time (such as an overworld to traverse and diversity in equipment loadouts).

Dragon Age: Origins is a good one for story. It can be a tactical RPG somewhat on the higher difficulties but on normal or easy you can play it with being strategic or tactical. Definitely one I would say you should at least look up.

Then there's my two favorite action RPGs which are Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. Now these RPGs are probably not going to be something you want to try out right away since how they are known for their difficult learning curves but the environments and story can be incredible once you get the hang of it. Plus the combat is pretty great and the boss fights are fun.

Just my advice.

Mother 3, Xenoblade if you can afford a copy or emulate.

But seriously, Mother 3. Do it.

I remember seeing Mother 3 at a game store in LA bundled with a Game Boy Micro. There was also a copy of Earthbound there for like $250. Mother 3 would be awesome to play, but the only issue is I don't really like emulation.2013-08-27 01:27:00

Nintendo never localized, and hasn't sent a C&D to the fan translation... which was finished years ago.

You're good.

Also, if you're into ARPG's, Monster Hunter or Ys are both good. Dark/Demon Souls too, if you aren't shy of a challenge.

Well, I know Mother 3 wasn't localized here. I think someone got it from Japan and traded it to the store. Idk. Also, I have MH3U (great game), and Ys looks cool. I might check out the new one coming out for Vita.2013-08-27 03:31:00
