Rebl Reviews - High quality reviews, and FAST

Archive: 19 posts

EDIT: Sorry that I forgot about this page for a few months, I went off to college and not a single thought passed through my head about it until now. I will be doing regular reviews again for the summer, as fast as I can get to them. I already have a backlog of reviews that I am going to get started on right away. Sorry it took so long.

Hello everyone at LBPC,

I present to you:

Rebl Reviews
I am going to start reviewing levels regularly, and I aim to do it in a timely manner while being as detailed as possible. I will review ANY level you post here, but be warned, if you are looking for a "10/10 MM Pick!" you are NOT going to find that here. Nothing will ever earn a 10 on my scale because I believe that the beauty of LBP is that it is always improving. I also pledge to not focus on only positives or negatives, to improve your level making skills you need to know both what you did well and what you can improve from another perspective.

Grading Scale
Here is how I will grade the levels so that there are no surprises.
All categories will be weighted equally, at 2 points each. Here are the catagories:

Gameplay/Camera Angles
The core of any level is it's gameplay. After all, it is why we are playing a game. This obviously does not apply to movies or cutscenes. I am mainly looking for originality and functionality here, although other factors apply.

If the level is a cutscene or movie, the camera angles are what will be graded here.

Graphics
Although not essential, graphics quality can really improve your level. This is of course, all up to opinion but I will be mainly looking to see if they are appropriate to your level theme. As always, other factors may apply.

Music
Since everyone is not a master at using the music sequencer, I am mainly looking to see if the music is appropriate for the level theme here. Be warned, I am a musician so I might grade this pretty harsh.

Story
Since not all levels require a story, you might just get full points on this category if your gameplay and graphics are strong enough to carry your level. Expect to lose points here if the level felt like it needed a story to help push it along.

Other Factors
This last category is for anything that might affect your score that I find that was not mentioned above. More details will be given in each individual review.

Dur, that was too formal. Yo, wassup mah homie u shud play mah levels dawg!

Thanks for your enthusiasm, I will edit this post later today with your reviews

Sackdroid - Intro by Kalawishis

Camera Angles
The camera angles in this level are very interesting at times. The backgrounds are highly animated and make the cutscene much more interesting. You are really given an authentic presentation of the world this level is set in. At times the camera play is average at best, but overall the angles of the camera provide an enjoyable experience. I was particularly impressed during the top down sections.

Graphics
The graphics in this level are very good. I was reminded of the graphical style of the story levels at certain points. Sure, there have been levels out there with better graphics but everything in this level worked with the theme and nothing really stood out of place for me.

Music
A combination of custom and cinematic music was used here. All of the music fits with the theme, and I was particularly impressed with the custom music. That being said, a point will be lost here because the voice acting was drowned out by the music at times.

Story
The story in this level is all original and is top notch in LBP2. The story is set up well enough to give you a very accurate representation of the world this level takes place in. I have one complaint here, however. Most of the backstory can be obtained only from reading the description. It may not be a big deal for most players but there are some who will not know exactly what is going on at first if they didn't read the description.

Other Factors
The voice acting is going to play a major role here. At first, I was not very impressed with the voice acting performance. Lines were read slowly, and in weird accents that did not seem relevant to the characters being portrayed. Lines were occasionally stuttered, and the voice acting overall was not of fantastic quality. However, as the movie progressed, I found myself warming up to the characters a lot more.

Final Verdict
7/10

This is a very high quality intro. The only areas it comes up short in are the voice acting, occasional music balancing issues, and too much of the backstory being stored in the description. I give it my seal of approval and I encourage everyone to play it to form their own opinions.

Sackdroid Part 1 by Kalawishis
This one is extremely late, as I went to college and forgot about this page entirely, but here it is.
Gameplay
There are solid gameplay ideas presented in this level. In particular flipping from side to opposite side of the base was highly original. That said, this system was a little clunky and took me some time to get used to. Overall a great display of original content and side activities as well.

Graphics
The graphics in this level are on par with the presentation of the intro. So far, this is one of the first environments in a LBP adventure game that has felt truly alive, and the aesthetic here goes a long way in helping. I could go further, but no spoilers.

Music
Nothing overly out of place with the music, about what you would expect. Fine work

Story
Top notch story, just as before. Not much else to mention here without spoiling anything. See my above review of the intro for more information about my complaints as they carry over here.
Other Factors
The voice acting, once again, is what will count here. Not many levels have voice acting but the ones that do deserve some grading on it. By this point, I have warmed up to the characters presented in the level so the voice acting isn't as much of a concern for me now.

Final Verdict
8/10

This is a very high quality level. Since I got used to some of the concepts discussed in the review of the intro, they do not count against this level as much as before. This said, some of the gameplay mechanics needed some work, and that is the major thing that hinders this from a higher score. I encourage anyone and everyone to get their hands on this as it is a prime example of storytelling in this game.

That one will be coming soon, there is a massive amount of content in your level and I want to cover it thoroughly. I will update this post when I have a detailed enough review for you.

Oh, hey. You know, you don't have to be too thorough.

Hi there!

I just recently published my first level, Super Connect 4, It is 2-player only and it features a fully functional Connect 4 gameboard with a twist. You can activate several game changing power ups while you are playing and it opens up a whole new world of Connect 4 strategies! I would love to get some complete well-rounded feedback!

If you get the time I would greatly appreciate it!

I am sorry to say I do not. I don't own a vita, as much as I would love to. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Lost The Series - Stranger in a Strange Land by greensmurfy

Gameplay
The first mechanic you are introduced to once you start up this level is the ability to grab fruit to gain points. This is nothing out of the ordinary as they basically serve as reskinned point bubbles. Next thing you will probably notice is that you are getting asked a trivia question in a platformer. One example of a question is what color the numbers were in the previous area. Pretty unorthodox for a level like this, and I personally feel this takes away from the immersion that could have been built with the gorgeous environments that have been created in this level.
There are some positives about the gameplay despite what I mentioned above. Sometimes you are able to choose your experience and completely alter a gameplay section by choosing which enemies or obstacles you will face. This is a cool idea. There are also hidden areas to find so keep an eye out.

A trivia example:
http://i9.lbp.me/img/fs/a69e07233b35b5a74fb104f39c77031d1f44066a.jpg
Another thing to mention is the info about the actual show LOST scattered about the place. There are spoilers contained somewhat abruptly in these with no mention until you area already reading the spoiler so beware.

Graphics
Graphics are what you would expect from a top notch platformer. Excellent lighting effects are showcased here too. The forest is gorgeous to look at and I applaud your art style here.

Some strange things happen with this however where I suspect you started to run out of space on the thermometer. The graphics just get gradually more and more bare bones until you end up with the graphics of the van sequence that I will post below. ... just why? The rest of the level was so beautiful.

Music
A solid job on the custom music here. I am not sure if some of the tracks were designed specifically for this level or not since most of them work but some seem just slightly out of place. The intro track in particular is done well but I have a feeling some of the tracks weren't composed with the idea of this level in mind, but all of the music is solid and commendable. That said you won't see anything revolutionary in the music, it is all about what you would expect for this setting.
... that is until a gameplay section with a van with Michael Jackson music. The rest of it is solid though so I will commend that.

The pre made music that ships with the game, however, is another story. Right off the bat in the opening game sequence two tracks are used in a row that seem awkwardly out of place. Notably you will be running around a well designed forest level to MGS4 alert mode music that is completely out of place. Commissioning the same people who made the custom music to make music to fill in these sections would help out a lot.

Over all the music is just all over the place and a mixed bag.

Story
Not much to speak of here. You aren't given any story motivation to do what you are doing. Unless you watch the show LOST it might make more sense to you. It is probably because I didn't play them in sequence, but ep. 4 of this series doesn't have much to add to the story.
Other Factors
Cutscenes have some weird timing issues despite being single player only so they can't be lag based. Like with the graphics, cutscenes start out strong and get weaker.
One more thing to note s that on my second playthrough, I witnessed a cutscene succeed that must have failed on the first time because the MGS4 music wasn't blasting the entire time on the second run. I even was able to skip an entire gameplay segment on the first go. So some weird issues where you can break parts of the cinematics and progression, not sure what the issue is exactly but take note.

The level starts out looking like this:
http://ie.lbp.me/img/fs/82e1d5d2bc1665b885a46b8822db8049b470aa04.jpg

And ends up looking like this:
http://i9.lbp.me/img/fs/5597ef398a65c2528ccc1d9a7188cfa133489432.jpg

Final Verdict
6/10
This level is solid and above average all around. Some strange design decisions keep it from achieving a higher score, but it could easily be improved and score much higher.

Super Connect 4 by Madman_Asunder

Gameplay
Very interesting concepts here, although they were somewhat of a missed opportunity as I will show you. The idea of having twin stick shooter elements and various other strategic powers that you can activate to disrupt an otherwise straightforward game of strategy is fantastic. I just wish the systems were optimized better. Especially during the twin stick shooter segments the game's performance dips terribly and the controls for the actual twin stick shooting become unresponsive and hard to use. I don't know if it was lack of experience with logic or what that is causing the game to run terribly during this level but the systems could use some streamlining so they run faster and don't render the controls unresponsive. I would really like to see a sequel where more varied power ups are brought to the plate and the performance issues are solved.

Graphics
Is it just me, or is there a strange fog covering everything? As you will see from the pictures I will post there is a weird discoloration on everything that is probably due to some strange fog setting. Besides that, graphics were not overly impressive and probably couldn't be any more impressive then they are due to the optimization issues that I discussed before, which is unfortunate.

Music
No original music, which is a shame. I hope to see some original, even if commissioned, music in your next level.

Story
Doesn't apply here, so I will talk about the tutorial. A solid tutorial that explains the mechanics extremely well. I appreciate the thoughtful cinematic you created here.

Other Factors
Overall the design suffered in every way from the performance of the level. That is the biggest issue as you might have gathered from reading this
Final Verdict
6/10
This level could be improved in several ways, and I am certain the creator will revisit what I talk about here if a sequel is made. Excellent for a first level. An above average level that performs high in creativity, but unfortunately not as well on the PS3 due to optimization difficulties. I encourage all who are interested in strategy to give it a try. Seriously, play this level you and a friend will have fun with it.

I'll take a second look to see how far it has come and edit this post. I will also post the original review of the release state of the level here for reference. Thanks for letting me know you have fixed some of the problems with it.

- - - - - - - - - -
Expand by Tynz21

My original informal review of the level for a reference on the release version:

Everyone says that. I had it like that initially. All the logic and everything is in the level. But a weird issue has forced mean to remove replay option as of now. If you're interested, read this thread:

https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=89444-emitter-thermo-issues

Also, It was intended to be 8x8 but I had to cut it down for thermo issues. I can take a look and try to optimize the logic somewhat, but I doubt I'll fit 8x8 unless I remove everything in the level aside from the puzzle itself, which isn't happening.
I am going to post some more detailed thoughts about this level here since my review in game is confined to a ludicrous size limit.

Some of these issues may have been fixed by now, so these thoughts are on the release version of the level yesterday.

First off, lets talk about the options menu. More and more LBP levels are starting to have these since the addition of the memorizer, and rightfully so. With the memorizer, options menus are more practical than ever since the ability to remember a users options between plays is possible. That is the problem here. If you have specific options you like to set up to play this, you will have to do it every time you load up the level. Another thing to note is the nature of the "themes" option. What this does is add a color correction over the top of everything. Since this is a game about matching colors, I found it much harder to play with any of these options enabled since the color corrections make everything less distinct and more washed out. So a couple strange design decisions, but ones that can be easily fixed.

Next thing to note is that there is no endgame sequence. You don't get any reward or indication by the end of the level that you have either unlocked any of the achievements, or in fact won the level at all. You are forced to hold circle to exit the game just like you would if you are giving up. My first time playing, there was this awkward silence after I solved the puzzle where I was waiting for the level to at least pat me on the back a little. Unfortunately the level never acknowledges that you have actually beat it. Also, as mentioned above, players who want to take advantage of the replay-ability of this randomly generated puzzler will be frustrated by the need to watch the same opening cinematic over and over again. Another issue that could be fixed with the memorizer, or even with a loop back to the main menu after completing the game. Just a couple more strange design decisions that can be addressed like I described above.

Lastly, there is obviously an elephant in the room here that I have to address. As the creator himself has stated above, the logic needs to be optimized. It is really unfortunate that it was released before the logic was streamlined because I feel a more complete, satisfying experience could have been delivered if only there were room on the thermometer to address the things I brought up previously. That being said, I will personally help you streamline any logic if you want any help. There was too much potential here for it to be released in this state. If everything I talked about above is fixed, then this level could have easily earned a 6/10 or a 7/10 from me.

With everything above considered I rate this level:

5/10, an average experience.
The questionable design decisions I described above hold this level back. I still encourage everyone to play it regardless because of the unique and original ideas presented in it.

This is what is new in the update:
The intro cutscene only plays once now. Upon replay you won't have to watch it ever again. Makes replaying the level less of a chore compared to the release version, thanks for this feature.

The level still doesn't remember your options between loads. Although it sends you back to the main menu now after completing a puzzle, when you replay the level after leaving it still won't remember your options. Please implement this. This is a reason why the memorizer was added into the game in the first place.

"Themes" now have the description "for an added challenge". This is kind of a makeshift fix to the actual problem that the themes have. Using these as difficulty options is a cheap way to make the level harder without having to make any logic that can determine the difficulty of the level. I honestly think removing the themes and placing a more useful option in their place such as graphics settings would do more good here. With a low/med/high graphics option you could make the level more playable and have the frame rate stay reasonable.

Now that the return to main menu ability is added, the level runs poorer then before. The frame rate will drop to insane low levels and the visuals will glitch. Some of the bigger issues may have been fixed, but an equally big issue has been created in the process. Expect very low frame rates that make the level unresponsive.

You will also still have to hold circle after completing the level to return to the menu. This is the same if you give up in the middle of the puzzle. The endgame still has the same issues. Anything at all to let the player know the puzzle is actually over is better then nothing. Maybe a timer that keeps track of how long it took you to complete?

Also, I didn't mention these issues before but they are worth mentioning since the creator asked me to take a second look at the level. Note that the creator of the font was not given any credit in the release version. The tutorial boils down to "play it on untimed mode until you figure out what is happening". Lots of people will not like this. If you want the level to let you know what the puzzle is that you are trying to solve unfortunately you are out of luck. Also, the entrance is visible when you start the level on replay.

Improved, but there are still several issues to be addressed and even new ones that have been created with the update. My original score of 5/10 still stands for this reason. The main improvement is that people who want to replay this puzzler will not be as frustrated by the conflicting design decisions.

If you're available, I'd love to have a review of one of my levels. I'm laying some ground work for a sort of prequel/tutorial to this, so people can better understand the mechanics of the monsters. Mind you this tutorial will be a fully fleshed out level, and not just a cutscene. A review of what I've got will help me identify what to do in the next installment. Most notably I know I need to make it more obvious how you're supposed to defeat the creatures. (If you see them, it means you're too late.)

Anyway, I recommend you try it on easy for the time being.
