STAR WARS: Cloudy With a Chance of Carbon Freezing: Pt Two

Archive: 24 posts

Hey Jedis

http://lbp.me/p/qhx8tg6

I've published my latest, the second part in a planned Cloud City trilogy. (2 & 3 were meant to be both out & linked , but I'm not getting these finished with any speed!)

Its a pretty challenging level, its all about the special moves here, but be brave. A cool (i hope) fight with Vader and some pacy platforming await.

Thanks for posting the level and the picstures were very beautiful and made me want to really play it, but I felt downtrodden that you forgot not to post a link! Anyways, I was in a mood of going and finding it! I can't wait to play your level; Consider it Queued!!!

You can always just wrap tags around the picture url. That's all the picture icon does tbh.

Awesome level - epic, challenging and beautiful.

You have some great gameplay in there. I enjoyed having to work against all the different forces pulling you in directions you didn’t want to go and trying (!!) to master the special moves.

It is definitely a challenge at times though. It’s not that the obstacles were confusing at all. It was always easy enough to see what you were meant to do in order to pass – it just wasn’t always easy to do it! It’s like when you’re first learning to drive. You have to think consciously all the time about what order you use the pedals in, whereas later you do it all completely automatically. When playing your level I have to think about which buttons to press. So for me the hardest parts of the level are the ones where you’re ceiling grabbing and dashing. I end up mentally reciting X, left stick hard left and then square. If I don’t, I end up pressing square before I move the left stick so I dash up, not left, and then plummet like a stone. So these sections get tackled with gritted teeth and dark mutterings.

I'm sure better players have no problems, though, and In all seriousness, I do enjoy pitting myself against a challenge like this, so I’m glad the difficulty level is where it is. I have played too many levels by now to get very much pleasure out of playing overly easy platformers any more.

My favourite obstacle was the section near the end where you float around activating the erm…electrified thingies with your lightsaber in order to open up the floor. That feels great if you get it right – so elegant somehow.

I also love the moment when you get sucked out into the open air near the end. I almost wish I hadn’t seen any pictures of it beforehand because that way the impact of being rushed out from the darkness into that gorgeous red sky would have been even greater.

As ever your lighting throughout the level is just lovely. The whole thing just looks amazing.

Thank you and I do hope you continue with Part 3.

Thanks for that feedback Lass. It's one of the drawbacks to creating levels in the structure I've chosen, I guess. I've decided to just dump players back in the deep end at the start of each new level, rather than ease them back in each time with some basic obstacles and some quick tutorials each time. For me this one is a really fun level to play, even months after starting it, but I'm totally at ease with the move set. But I appreciate your persistence!

I apologize profusely for not catching up on your levels. They always look so darn awesome! This one is in my queue for the weekend. Do I start here or should go back? It kind of sounds like I should go back in order to pick up the necessary skills to be a true Jedi…2013-08-20 16:54:00

Cheers! Go back a few if you have the time, the Saber and moves get introduced one by one from Hoth onwards...

I love the level so far, Jules.... But I'm ashamed to say I'm stuck.

I got to the part with lando. I'm in a room with a wheel and no way out. I spin the wheel in the direction of the arrows for a while, and nothing seems to happen. If this turns out to be a simple puzzle, I'm going to be really ashamed!

Well it's supposed to be a simple puzzle. ; ) You gotta use your dash to get some momentum going....Or did that not work? I made the wheel overly stiff, as a hint that just grabbing it wasnt going to cut it...does it need an extra hint you think?

It didn't occur to me to dash. I had three kids in the room suggesting things, so that could have been a factor.

I got on top of the wheel and was spinning it at fast as a could without dashing, without any feedback. So after a bit I started thinking "there must be something else to it"

I wonder if it would help if there was some kind of meter showing the player that The wheel hasn't reached a speed fast enough? That way they will get that "I'm getting warmer" feeling.

Either way, I'm gonna get back on this today. I absolutely LOVED it up to that point.

Yeh, it does exactly that funnily enough, but only once you've started to get a small amount of momentum. I'll see if I can tweak it.

Actually if anyone knows the setup for a meter/timer that fills up as a wheel gets faster? I think I had a bit of trouble in create with that and ended up with a speed trigger linked to a timer that fills once you hit a certain speed....

Ed - I bunged in a 'square' icon above the wheel Cubb, seems to most obvious thing to do...!

I played this again last night and finished it. Top stuff! Keeps getting more fun each time I play it.

I was thinking about that wheel section, and had a thought.... how about something like this:

If you solve the puzzle and get out of the room by yourself, you get some points.

If it takes you a few minutes to solve, maybe have a caption appear at the bottom along with Obi Wan's voice: "Trust your feelings, Luke. Sometimes you need to use the force while grabbing things."

... of course, replace the text with something witty and Jules-esque.

If the player doesn't solve the puzzle by themselves, they don't end up getting the points.

Maybe?

Of course, it's fine the way it is - but for people like me with a slightly lower IQ, it would help them along.

heh. I just think I generally tend to throw a load of unrelated gameplay at the player. It's easier to get away with when you're building a level for a regular sack, as there's only so many things the player can try in order to solve a puzzle, but now there's the sabre, dash, double jump and ground pound as options, coupled with unfamiliar gameplay, it might get a bit confusing at times. Like you say, it plays through better the more you play it. Although I've had some people play it anywhere from 10-30 times and still not finish. No idea.

Okay... I played this level a while back and I will say only this: if you publish the third part for this this year and if you make it good, this entire three-part level will be on my top 10 levels of 2013. I promise you this. I absolutely loved this, but I'll play this again to remind myself of what this was like before I can review this.2013-09-07 13:56:00
