Speedruns that are fun to watch.

Archive: 5 posts

Hiya all!

This is one of those topics that's subject to huge bias but let's do this thing!

I was turned onto the notion of speedruns in the early 2000s and around the same time learned about all the ways people "do it wrong", i.e., via save states, glitches in the code and so forth. That has never bothered me. It isn't about the integrity of a straight run, it isn't about completion... it isn't even about the fastest time. Speedruns to me are the perfect balance of style and pace, where you're able to enjoy a thing without necessarily having played it yourself. The talent is evident, the exploits too maybe, but the joy of watching trumps all.

Since I spent hundreds of hours in the 1980s on fruitless, hairpullingly difficult NES games I tend to find those speedruns the most "entertaining", but there's no shortage of amazing contenders in the 3D polygon era of games. It's true that the more intimate your knowledge, the more fascinating the breaks for a given game. Famous games have a broader recognition and therefore a larger audience to appreciate a speedrun.

Anyway.

Today I decided to check up on Duck Tales speedruns, seeing the HD remake is upon us.

Metroid, Castlevania and Megaman all have their various speedruns.

Valve games have some amazing runs as well.

What stands out as a really fun speedrun to you?

It helps if the game is fast-paced to begin with but the most important thing is that there's ample opportunity for the runner to **** about. Unless the game is short, a flawless run with no comedic relief is hard to watch.

I like this run of Rocket Knight Adventures.

Probably 1 of the games that was made pretty much for speed runs to begin with. "Sonic The Hedgehog"

And like Ayneh said. I prefer to watch funny-people playing games often. *mew

Funny I have actually been watching a lot of speed runs lately. I enjoy watching the games of my childhood broken into little pieces.

Super Mario 64 is usually run in three different categories: 16 star (utilizing glitches one can beat the game just with this amount), 70 star (what you would need to beat the game normally), and 120 star (100% game completion.) It is possible to beat the game with 0 stars but the feats that need to be completed are so next to impossible that it can't be done without slowing the game down using an emulator.

Siglemic here holds the record for 70 and 120 I believe. This isn't the world record run, but he is doing a 16 star and 120 star run live for charity. 16 star starts at 4:05 and 120 starts at 30:27. 16 star is beaten in 20:14 and 120 is beaten in 1:47:48 (about 1 star every 53 seconds!)

I watch a lot of speed runs, the more entertaining are the fast paced FPS types. The most extraordinary is the Half-Life 29:41 on easy.
