Code Entry Demonstration

Archive: 5 posts

It has been a while since I posted new tutorial/demonstration level on LBP2 and this one is written with a previous conversation I had a few days ago. This level simply gives a demonstration for code entry. Two types are presented, "Combination Dial" and "Input Encrypted". This level is copyable for the purpose of giving everyone the chance to see what is under the hood and use the techniques to apply in their own levels. I also have a separate topic here on LBPCentral.com with more detailed instruction on how to build code entry systems as well. (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=81269-WyomingMyst-presents-quot-Code-Entry-Systems-quot-for-LBP2&p=1122270#post1122270)

Enjoy!

I've never considered having such a thing in my own levels but it wouldn't hurt to look at it; Consider it Queued!!! 2013-08-12 05:05:00

Okay basically, put the techniques seen in this are meant for showing how to create a combination sequenced lock of sorts. Here are some video game examples where this applies:

Contra for Nintendo Entertainment System - the Konami Code is used to give the player 30 lives instantly which is helpful considering how tough this game really is.
Castlevania for Nintendo Entertainment System - a alphanumeric code is used to resume certain points of the game which is a substitute for a save file system. Players are given the option of obtaining a code each time they reach game over.
Ms. PAC-MAN/GALAGA 20-year Reunion for Arcade - the lesser known NAMCO code (up, up, up, down, down, down, left, right, left, right, left, start) is used to change the Ms. PAC-MAN game to the original PAC-MAN game instead.
DanceDanceRevolution X2 for Arcade - there are three unlock codes that a player can enter on the dance platform before hitting start. These unlock codes are used to permanently unlock songs and other content for everyone to use.

Examples in Story Mode on LittleBigPlanet
A very basic binary code is seen in the Factory of a Better Tomorrow, this concept expands to an idea of what an combination lock code entry can be like.
A very basic input encrypted code entry is seen in the first level in the Cross Controller pack, where the player uses the Vita to play a musicial sequence to open doors.

How can you use code entry for your levels:
A combination lock code entry with multiple accepting codes is a great way to provide a "memorizer substitute" for LittleBigPlanet 2 (since LBP2 does not have the Vita exclusive item). Great if you are ambitious to create large and comprehensive platformers that take a long time to complete.
Either a combination lock or input encrypted can be used as keys for your levels, give the code early in your level with emphasis that the player should write it down, then later on, build a door that only opens when the code is entered properly.
When you are making a non-traditional level such as a social game, you can release bonus content by hiding code entry in things like option settings. For example in LBP Vita, I am building a social game where the player can change the music, however if the player changes certain music titles in the correct order they unlock bonus features for the game itself.
