Underrated Videogame Music

Archive: 6 posts

You don't need me to tell you this, but videogame music is great. Bad music can ruin a game, but great music can elevate a game to legendary. While we all know Zelda, Halo, and Shadow of the Colossus all have great soundtracks (just to name a few), there are lots of game soundtracks that go horribly under the radar despite being great. Heck, some mediocre soundtracks feature gems. So... Let's share some!

Off is a bizarre, often disturbing RPG made in 2003, and translated in 2008. Give the music a listen, and you can see why.

Advance Wars has quite a few catchy songs, although it's not really a series known for its music. I can see why some might think some tracks are busy, but hey, I like them regardless.

Here's a few gems from Mother 3.

Now, give a few more examples! That is, if you want to.

Game's decent, but the OST was surprisingly fun to listen to.

Oh, I forgot to mention the phenomenal soundtrack of Gravity Rush, which was the saving grace of an otherwise fun but very flawed game.

Yeah, even if it was a little bit buggy for some people, Gravity Rush is my second favorite Vita game ever (first being LBPV of course), but the soundtrack was totally awesome. Some of the best stuff I've ever heard in a videogame. I even used some of them in a movie I made for Art class I demand a sequel for Gravity Rush

Rushed onto the market as part of the legion of titles Square was releasing in the PS1's early days and when the company was at it's creative peak, Saga Frontier was very much a "love-it" or "hate-it" game. What can't be denied is that the soundtrack by Kenji Ito is impeccable, being highly diverse and oftentimes epic:

Speaking of Square, Einhander was another such game released in the PS1's infancy and despite being something of a flash in the pan for the company it actually was an incredibly fun and exciting shmup, and this was in no small part due to the soundtrack. Kenichiro Fukai's music does its absolute best to keep the adrenaline pumping throughout the whole experience:

Armored Core is another game that has its origins on the PS1, but unlike the SaGa series and the one-off Einhander it has displayed remarkable longevity despite not knowing great success outside of Japan and the franchise continues to this day and is actually From Software's (as in, the guys that made Demon's Souls and Dark Souls) most long running IP. While the series has reinvented itself more than a few times to the point of being nigh-unrecognizable, it is a general rule that no "true" fan of the franchise does not know of its most memorable antagonist, whose theme song is arguably even more memorable and enduring than the character, and has a few remixes to its credit (this being the latest one). Target verified, commencing hostilities...:

While the Mega Man franchise these days is all-but dead in the water there was a time, believe it or not, when Capcom not only cared about the Blue Bomber but was even kind enough to give a chance for members of his supporting cast some of the spotlight. Zero was a character from the Mega Man X subset of the franchise and easily a fan favorite, to the point where he got his own quadrology on the GBA. All said and done and in spite of the cutesy art style, the games featured challenging gameplay (comparable to a 2D Devil May Cry), told one of the darkest tales in the franchise while also creating some of its most epic moments...and its most evil antagonist. This all comes together in the climax of the final game which, in another swerve from series convention, gave Zero something that the rest of the franchise couldn't with all its other protagonists, a sendoff truly worthy of the character:
