Bears of Japan :)

Archive: 2 posts

Hiya all,

This is just a project I'm doing on a whim this week. Figured I would share. Lots of trivia too!

↑ Left to right:
● "Brown Cony", a character from the "Hello, Friends" entertainment side of communications-turned-mobile app juggernaut LINE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_%28application%29).
● "Kumamon", the redesigned 2010 mascot for Kumamoto prefecture of Japan (each prefecture and indeed various cities within prefectures have their own mascots) which has become a national sensation.
● "Gloomy", or popularly "Gloomy Bear", by character designer Mori Chack, well known among designers around the world after a boom of success in the 2000s.

↑ Left to right:
● "Panda Kopanda" was an animated film in the 1970s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panda_go_panda) by Hayao Miyazaki, before the creation of Studio Ghibli. You can see his signature style here as the panda looks very much like Totoro.
● "Rilakkuma", which comes in brown and white bear styles and is an enduring popular character that is branded on everything from tissues to calendars to magnets. I personally own a giant 100cm tall stuffed Rilakkuma. Love this adorable expressionless thing!
● "Teddie" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Persona_4_characters#Teddie), the anthropomorphic bizarro bear from Persona 4. I have not played the game or seen the TV series, but have seen Teddie show up often enough to believe he's quite popular by now.

↑ Left to right:
● "Kuma" from the Tekken series. To me this just an ongoing joke, but every game in Tekken franchise has included a bear fighter, and there's a whole storyline for those who know and have followed the series.
● "Panda-Z" from the animation of the same name. Not terribly well known to me, but I have yet to meet someone who doesn't instantly recognize the character. The premise is easy enough: little panda operates a giant pandabot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giyD9-clIDA)! How is this NOT the most famous thing in the universe?
● "Be@rbrick" is a mutation of "Kubrick", the Lego-like collectible designer toyline that has earned its creator and production company MediCom simply gobs of money. There are stores in Tokyo founded on the Be@rbrick craze. The average collectible sells and resells for 3000 yen (about $30 USD) from my casual observation, and special sized ones or particular paint jobs can easily reach ten times that amount. This is a blank template. A quick Google search (http://www.google.co.jp/search?q=bearbrick&bav=on.2,or.&bvm=bv.49967636,d.dGI,pv.xjs.s.en_US.jOYpRJj4zMA.O&biw=1179&bih=828&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=ja&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=QA75UdSnFoiElQW56YCoCA) shows you just how diverse Bearbricks get!

↑ Left to right:
● "Pooh-san", as he is known in Japan.
● "Care Bear", without the plural "s" since Japanese does not have this particular grammar tendency.
● "Yogi Bear", who as far as I can tell is unpopular here. Fans are probably kids who saw the 3D movie.

↑ Left to right:
● Anyone remember Teddy Ruxpin? Man that was great. If you had a Ruxpin cassette bear as a kid, you are an '80s child through and through. There's something of a new generation attempt with Supertoy Teddy designed to work with smartphones, or so says the Internet, but I think it won't reach the same heights. Schadenfreude. Heh.
● "Kung Fu Panda" is a globally acclaimed franchise, well known here. No name change.
● "Ted" from Seth Macfarlane's recent film. This image was the commonly used one for promoting the film in Japan, along with the tagline which translates to "The world's worst teddy bear has arrived." I'm not sure if it did well in theaters.

↑ Left to right:
● South Park's infamous panda. I am singing the theme song now.
● Superted, the trippy cartoon also from the '80s!
● Paddington Bear. Of these three bears, Paddington is likely the best known.

↑ Left to right:
● "Jackie", from Kuma no Gakkou, or The Bears School (http://bears-school.com/english/index.html), a children's book series and small merchandise empire.
● "Monobear", from Danganronpa, the popular game series turned anime series. Currently booming.
● "Mononokuma" (http://www.tv-tokyo.co.jp/anime/mononokuma/streaming/), the simple animated mascots of a 3-minute segment that airs every Saturday morning on TV Tokyo.

* I'll keep adding to this.
