BETA: The Other Side by comphermc

Hey Sack-chums,

I've been noticeably silent on these forums for quite a while, but I'm still here, lurking in the shadows. I recently got a big chunk of vacation, so I thought it was a perfect time to make a new level. This one is a puzzle platformer called The Other Side.

The Other Side is presented as a follow up to the game Limbo, but features a mostly original experience. What I am looking for, then, is some people who will help me test out the level and squash any bugs that I may have missed. I'd also love to know if any of the puzzles are too obscure and/or difficult. I'll be actively updating the level for the next several days before publishing it for the world. So if you'd like a sneak peek, or think you are worthy of bug-finding, then have at it!

Whoa! YOU are the guy who inspired me to make polished and good levels in LBP So glad to hear from you! Let's go Beta test!

Thanks. Did you have any problems with any of the puzzles?

The music is actually the Marvel DLC int music, but using only the first stem. It works nicely, doesn't it?

Ok, just played it, and...
It's Amazing, I completely forgot that I was playing LBP, I felt in another game, an incredible one.

From the moment you start playing you can enjoy the scenery, the enviroment... Whoo!

The puzzles are great! very well made and ingenious, totally original and challenging!

The level has a duration of gameplay quite enjoyable! the first time it took me 20 minutes to finish it!
And the music, the ending, and those little details of the game... :star:

On average, an fantastic level! has been a delightful! Great job! :star:

LBP has been glowing with your absence. great to see you're still alive and kicking

i had some issues at this part 46377 and the part with the collapsing pipe. But i got past it pretty fast either way.

Stunning detailing with flies and pipes!

My jaw dropped at the last part (you know the part I'm talking about ;] )

Great level design, Polished mechanics and a great difficulty curve. I didn't experience any bugs or what i perceive to be bugs in my first play-through. all around a great successor for Limbo

I plan to play it again in a while

Good to hear. I was worried that some of the puzzles wouldn't work out, but I feel more confident now! That DLC has quite a few nice assets, and the mingames are very well done, offering tons of play time.

Edit: For my testers, I have just updated the level again. I did a full dephysicalization pass, so the framerate is much more solid now, but I may have accidentally dephysicalized something I'm not supposed to. Keep an eye out for level escapes.

Also, based on scores, I changed the time bonus so that you get points for finishing under 30 minutes, not 20 minutes. As before, the faster you finish, the more points you get.

Just completed a second walkthrough and found all 10 secrets ! I think if people are actually looking for them it is "easier" to find them. In my first walkthorugh I had no idea "hearts" were secrets. Glad I could finally see the alternative ending. The very last secret was a really tough one! I loved it! Also, top-score!

Nice job! I'm actually in the process of moving one of my least favorite secrets to a location that makes it very obvious that they exist.

I really loved every secret's secret location, all of them were really good thought of. Maybe insetad of moving one, you can just point out the existance of secrets by stressing/highlighting the location of the very first one, I think that one is easy enough to spot.

Actually its not that hard... At first I actually got there by accident by looking for potential secret's locations. You can get on top of that from both sides of the tube, just by using adequately the ledge jump system. Not the big deal but I guess it should be physicalized again.

Absolutely amazing experience it was the subtle things that impressed me the most from little stuff like the sackbot head facing the other way when pulling a crate and automatically grabbing the crate when pushing, it gave the level a different dynamic to it, which made it stand out as a true "un-traditional" lbp level as most people don't change those kind of things. And of course the visuals and gameplay were top-notch, with great progression I felt smarter as I begin solving more and more complex puzzles. I only struggled on one puzzle which I soon had that "ah ha" moment, which felt great!

That's my initial impressions on my first playthrough I'll be back if I manage to find any bugs on my next playthroughs.

Right, so I just republished with a few "significant" changes. I've relocated a secret, added a splash of color, and a few other things that nobody but me will notice. It's very close now. I just need to do an optimization pass and remove a few cheat codes used for testing.

Cheat codes ?! Whoa, I need them !

So here's my review :

Hum... Is there any word more awesome than "awesome" ? I need one to describe your level ! LBP never stops impressing me... That's this kind of level that lets people see how complex is Creating Mode. It absolutely needs its Team Pick (like Hexagonal BTW...).
The graphic style is a piece of art, you caught the LIMBO's aspect and did your own silhouette level. There is a lot of details like flies, the improved background scrolling (3D glitch ?), animations, the fine shiny line around the screen... The cinematic at the end is outstanding !
Sound design is also very sweet ! The dark (no joke ?!) ambiance is unique. There is plenty of noises and the music fits the level very well !

Now...the most important thing of a game : the gameplay ! Yours is very smooth, efficient and very polished ! The ideas are ingenious and various. Alternating platform parts and puzzles gives a really nice rhythm through the level. It is challenging (mostly the puzzles) but not impossible at all ! I think it will be alright for a lot of people, but if you see that just a minority of players achieves the level, you could make appear some tips if a sackboys stills stucked in an area during an amount of time... BTW the firefly is a really nice detail to show the right way ! There is a nice scoring aspect too.
I finally didn't encounter any glitch and get the good end and the 2nd place on leaderboards... but one secret is missing :kz: ! I will try to get this one another time (under the 2 saws at the end) !

This was my review and if you're still awaked, I would like to give you (another time) all my congratulations and thanks for this game !

Right, so... the level is finished. I'm pretty confident that I've addressed all the issues you (and others) had with the level. I think I may do a minor tweak to the score pay-out at the end to add more weight to the time stat, but otherwise I'm really happy with how it turned out. For those of you that had already tested it, the "Load Chapter" option will still be enabled for you, but new players will not have access until they finish the level the first time.

I will be publishing today, but I'm not entirely sure when. I'll try to give a heads up, so you guys can jump on and get the first few reviews and whatnot.
