Has Anyone Created a True RGB Display?

Archive: 3 posts

Disclaimer: Wasn't really sure where this would go so into general I went.

Honestly I'm a bit baffled here

Over the past 2 days I've prototyping logic to control a 4x4px RGB display (halfway done). This morning I thought I'd take a look at some of the RGB displays others had created, maybe my searching skills are failing me today, but I couldn't find a single true* RGB display anywhere; in-game search, lbp.me search, google, even Youtube.

*By 'true' I mean,
A display that uses pixels made of the 3 (R,G,B) sub-pixels. Which can read, and display, image data fed to it.

I find it impossible to believe I'm the first to do this, these must exist somewhere!
So if anyone knows of any it would be great if you could send a link to the level my way

They've certainly been made before. I tried making one when some friends on PSN were playing with the idea.

The primary issue is that when over 1000 objects are present on the screen the framerate begins to suffer.

That means, to create a 4:3 aspect ratio monitor using RGB sub-pixels, you could only have a resolution of 20x16 pixels at most. A screen that size could display something like 8 characters total with a 6x8 font which is pretty tiny.

A monochrome monitor is more practical. The max resolution you could achieve making a 4:3 monitor before the game starts stuttering would be something like 40x27 pixels, which is about 1/15th the size of your current avatar.

Yeah they're not exactly the most practical things haha, I just love the challenge of making one, (hence I've kept it quite small at 4x4).2013-07-28 01:18:00
