Decorating help?

Archive: 11 posts

I just can't seem to make my track look how i want.

I try and use the green material for grass on the background hills and either my shape gets too complex, or theres really hard lines between grass and dirt.

Any tips for effectively using materials and possibly tricks for masking those ugly hard edges of the materials.

I've still got about 65% of my Thermo free.

A great tip for making naturalistic environments... use the various leaves and flowers in the decorations menu!

However, you have to take an extra step to use them most effectively, by default they will snap to the contours of your terrain, which isn't very helpful. What you do is create the smallest circle or square of forcefield or hologram (depending on whether you want them to be drive-thru or not) then attach the decorations to it. Now you have full 360 degree control of the positions of these decorations and can do all sorts of cool things!

Try using the leaves sunken into the ground as grass, or ferns or even trees at a distance. Experiment with creating patterns, I've made a ton of different trees just by taking the leaf, placing it, cloning it, rotating it, placing it etc, helps to create natural looking foliage. Check out the palm trees on my Uprising! track, they were all made using this technique.

Hope this gives you some ideas and inspiration!

I'll give it a shot. I'm way better at laying out the track and the logic workings of it, then I am at decorating. It always looks like crap in my mind lol. If you have some time and want to give it a quick lookover and maybe throw me some specific ideas it's copyable on my earth.

Functionally it's sound and ready to go. It just needs better looks and a lil more track bank tweaking.

If you are using a block of material with a decoration on as mentioned by atheistsw I suggest a non-animated triangle shaped block. This has the fewest corners and has the least impact on the thermo. The more vertices (corners) the material has the bigger the hit on the thermo. This is true for all LBP games as far as I know 2013-07-25 23:33:00

Yep true for all But thanks for the reminder as I totally didn't think to do that. Which is fine because i haven't done any yet lol2013-07-25 23:50:00

Since we're getting into the technical details... empirical evidence suggests that squares and triangles have the same impact on the thermometer, in LBP1 at least. 2013-07-26 10:00:00

Hmm, I usually use circles, NO corners... I win, right? 2013-07-26 13:48:00

I don't know about in LBPK, but in LBP2 circles were the worst, because they're not actually round, they have dozens of corners, they're just really small. But regardless of size, a Vertice is a Vertice. So more vertices = more thermo.

Perhaps they fixed that issue with the new 3d engine though, since they can now actually make spheres. Would be worth a test. Make 50 circles, check thermo. Make 50 Triangles, Check thermo.

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure LBP2 thermo is a lot like LBP1, and in LBP1 an unmodified circle wasn't all that bad on the shape thermometer. You could fit 1400 dark matter circles in an empty level, versus 2500 triangles or squares(source (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=16840-Comprehensive-Thermo-Overview-and-Guide&p=297573&viewfull=1#post297573), very interesting thread if you're into this sort of thing).

But you're right, this is a completely different engine, we can't really say anything until we do some tests.

What you do is create the smallest circle or square of forcefield or hologram (depending on whether you want them to be drive-thru or not) then attach the decorations to it.

Attach a motor to any piece of material or object, set the motor's Priority to "Scenic" and the object/material becomes drive-thru. Works with forcefield, very useful for placing decorations.
I've found square shapes to be more thermo efficient than circles. I haven't noticed any difference between squares and triangles.

I have some decorative objects in my Pooka's Popit (https://karting.lbp.me/v/b3rj) level, anyone is welcome to use these
