Singular Duality (LBPC11)

This is my entry for LBPC11 Buddy Building.

I chose not to use a sackbot for the AI companion - too obvious! Their natural movement and jumping animations certainly make for convincing AI but I wanted to make something different. I had a controllinator "thing" I was playing around with for a non-sackboy level (a bit like my Parabolic Organica (http://lbp.me/v/hzwwp3) level) so I adapted it to become the buddy for this competition.

Initially it responded to flicks of the right stick and would follow, stop or invert its own gravity to roll on the ceiling but after reading the brief it wasn't AI enough, it depended on player control too much. I simplified it so it would always follow the player, stopping at a discrete distance and carrying out certain behaviours in context. I used three kids of tag to activate the specialised behaviour - one to turn the behaviour on, one to direct the drone's movement, and one to default back to following the player. There are other tags to cause it to change layers and pause on the spot.

I used a sackbot for the player because I wanted the drone and the player to die and/or spawn together so the popit is disabled to prevent unwanted suicides. A bit of a hassle for taking photos - maybe in LBP3 they could make popping yourself a tweakable option?

The drone communicates with visual speech bubbles and tells you what it wants you to do. You can reset to the last spawn point by holding all shoulder buttons down. Interestingly, all photos show the drone with its eye shut for some reason.

I want to give a big especiall thanks ewe to RtooDee2 (http://lbp.me/u/RtooDee2) and peoriaspitfire (http://lbp.me/u/peoriaspitfire)for their help with plenty of testing and bug blasting.

"Who needs real friends? Your co-op drone can follow you, change layers, activate switches, avoid danger and help you complete the level with just the occasional bit of teamwork. One (1) player only, HOLD ALL SHOULDER BUTTONS TO RESPAWN. Massive thanks to RtooDee2 and peoriaspitfire AND my beautiful, patient wife "

Hi Aratiatia, I liked the level up to the point in which I got stuck, lol. It was exactly where you grab the first purple circle. A door opened but I couldn't reach it. I threw my companion but he always came back. I'll try it again tonight. You should try to place more hints. Other than that it was pretty good.2013-07-25 02:41:00

Thanks, DawnBreaker_23, this area has been finnicky for a while. I've rebuilt the logic there twice and most of the time it seems to be fine! I cannae explain it. Sadly when that happens a restart is needed.

I'm adding a cutscene there to indicate the switch and add a speech bubble to the drone so players know to throw him/her up there. Ideally it will immediately go for the switch, pause and return to you. If I can sort that out the rest should be great.

Thanks for playing, I hope you can try again later and get the full experience!

Great entry! I still found one-two bugs I reviewed in your beta-thread, but this time I finished it and this was really good. The futuristic design is nice and discreet, and I found the companion definitively smarter than me! I loved the electric tethering effects too, I don't remember seeing something like this before!2013-07-26 17:39:00

This level is chock full of creamy droid goodness. I had a great time with my new best friend and even shed a tear when we parted ways at the scoreboard. This level does contain a couple of tricky sections that might cause a few less people to make the scoreboard, but overall it’s a very relaxing journey set against a beautifully designed backdrop. I highly recommend every one give it a try when they have.2013-07-26 20:36:00
