Community Chessboard is BACK! #7

Archive: 181 posts

Welcome one and all to the 7th Community Chessboard!

http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab311/SR20DETDOG/Community%20Chessboard%207/Banner_zpsff16aac7.jpg

A community project for all artists and not-so-artists out there.

Pick a square and let all your pixely arty goodness fill it up, it's so easy anyone can do it, and at the end we can all marvel at the pure artistic gold we've created together! Or if you can't wait, you can find all the previous chessboards at the bottom of this post.

Just make sure to read through the rules, there's not many there, and I even rewrote them to simplify things
Contributing a Square
1.---You must fill in ONE square, no more, no less.
1.1--If there is a grey line around any part of your square you must fill it in.
1.2--Try to make it fit in with adjacent squares. (not completely necessary)
1.3--Do not modify anyone else's square unless they specifically give you permission to do so.

Taking a Turn
2----You must post when you are taking your turn.
2.1--You cannot reserve a turn while someone else is taking their own turn.
2.2--If you do not finish your turn within 2 hours, your turn is invalidated, it is then open to anyone.
2.3--Once your turn is complete you must post the new image (No double posting).
2.4--You cannot take 2 turns in a row, unless a reasonable amount of time has past.

Posting Your Images
3----Save & upload all images as PNG only!, using JPGs ruins the image quality. (LBPC attachments will not work)
3.1--All and any images saved as JPG will try to be saved but there is no guarantee.

4--If ANY of these rules are broken your contribution may be invalidated, but I'll try to make sure that doesn't happen.

I've made the chessboard a bit smaller this time,
There are only 100 (10x10) squares now not 144 (12x12)

It's great to see LBPC's Community Chessboard return. Despite my lack of spriting skills, I'll do what I can to help participate in this. Expect me to edit this with my turn in a bit.

EDIT: Here it is.

I was honestly surprised there hadn't been another one while I was away.
Who needs skills? This is the Community Chessboard, it laughs in the face skill! Breaking straight through the skill wall into vast open lands of ideas and mayhem instead

I hope this pleases you your evilness

Anyway, 'spose I'll take a turn and update the OP.

EDIT: I added a... thing.

Takin' a turn!

EDIT: Done!

I felt it was only necessary, considering I did the same thing for the last 3 chessboards. xD

Also, I noticed the 2nd row of squares was 1 pixel taller than the others, but don't you worry your pretty little face, I fixed it. ^^

I'm going to blame that on the fact I made it at 1:00am, yup, that's definitely the reason... Nice work spotting that btw.

Quick note though,
There were the correct number of pixels, just one of the grid lines was in the wrong spot. So when you took 1px from the 2nd row the 3rd row was still 1px shorter. All fixed though, and I've double checked that all squares are 20x20px (including grey lines).

Nope, as long as it doesn't affect adjacent squares, that's no problem at all. In fact, if people feel they can improve their square, I would encourage them to.

I think I'll put another point in the rules specifically for this.

EDIT: Ninja turn taken

I tried to pull all the separate areas together a little with this one.
Also I noticed the black border has disappeared, I decided to leave it gone, it's not really needed after all.

Yeah chessboards are great, I've always loved drawings that get multiple people involved. Chessboards are probably my favourite because they get a lot of people helping, it's easy enough for anyone to try their hand at and the existing squares act as inspiration so it's easy to come up with an idea for a square to add. Not to mention the insane pictures that get produced at the end

Unfortunately around the time you registered here was the same time the chessboards started to dry up. I'm hoping they'll be a regular sight again

I just got an idea. @SR20DETDOG - why don't you ask a mod to sticky this thread (I obviously can't do it on your behalf, it's your thread), and have all of future chessboards stickied (with their predecessors being unstickied, of course)? That would probably help them become more popular, and would hopefully keep chessboards from being buried and unfinished.2013-08-16 02:34:00

While I don't see a problem with a sticky, I do feel that one of the reasons why some of the chessboards aren't finished is because people keep making new ones after seeing it sort of die out, and then claim to "revive" it. It's not a revival: it's an entirely new project all over again.

The best way to actually gets these things done and not make them seem like a very long process would be to actually go back to the old chessboards, make a new thread supporting its rebirth, and finish it instead of starting from scratch again.

I agree with this and was going to ask about it: why not continue board #6? It might help to actually NOT archive anything. Seeing all the incomplete white patches of old boards would probably be daunting and a reminder that people abandon these things. I also don't have a problem with the old, incomplete boards being merged to fill up the white gaps, however mish-mashed the results.

UPDATE: Added another patch!

I guess I never really thought of them as being important enough to merit being stickied, but if that's what people would like?

That's actually the whole reason I started a new one.

Chessboard #1 & #2 started and died before my time, since then they have all been completed until #6. I did consider simply bumping the thread for #6 but in all honesty I feel like the 14x14 chessboards are just too big, it has essentially double the number of squares this current one has and even small chessboards like this take a long time to finish, thus why I started a new smaller one. Keep it short and sweet so it doesn't take forever to see a final result.

The best way to actually gets these things done and not make them seem like a very long process would be to actually go back to the old chessboards, make a new thread supporting its rebirth, and finish it instead of starting from scratch again.
Maybe once this one is finished we can continue with the old ones.

or patchwork them together to make one messy incomplete image.
If someone wants to volunteer to do this I'd be all for it.

That said, it's ultimately about participation. If a dozen or so folks can't take turns quickly enough to progress the image or 2-3 people dominate it, we might as well all be making our own pixel artwork separately and have a thread called "pixel artwork". Which, actually... that wouldn't be a bad thing!
Personally I don't see a problem with some people adding many squares while others only contribute 1 or 2. Unless turns start being regulated it's naturally going to happen to some degree.

I ended up editing my comment because it came out terribly. What I meant was, I see participation being more important than completion, so maybe it's best not to have an archive at all. I'm all in favor of doing dozens of squares (it's fun!). What concerns me is when there are big galleries on display (half-empty ones... maybe to some extent the full ones too?) and for whatever reason the community is discouraged. So the activity dwindles to just a few contributors, at which point those contributors are capable of whipping up large pixel projects on their own. You know?

Anyway, bottom line, so long as there's activity that's the fun thing. Preserving the art, not so much.

I'm going to add my square after 2 or 3 more people take turns. I don't want to board hog, so that's that.

Don't hold back! More activity is good. The faster it fills up, maybe the more people will jump in and throw some interesting wrenches into the design.

@SR20DETDOG - Do you care if I use the Chessboard image as my signature, to hopefully attract some people here? Also, I finished my square, I'll put it up in a minute.

P.S. I decided to edit my top warp pipe image adding some grass to the left of it so it would merge nicely with Ryan's "orange guy" tile, if that's okay.

Thanks for that Dragon, it looks a lot nicer.

EDIT: Did a square. This one turned out to be a real pain in the butt, what with the 3 different colors I had to merge. I had 4 other designs before I stuck with this one, actually.

Not sure what everyone else is doing, but I just, in GIMP, select my square, copy it and paste it as a new image, choose "scale image", and set it to enlarge both height and width to 800% with no interpolation.

Hey guys, I tried my hand at combining a couple of the chessboards together (#2 & #6), just wondering if everyone wanted to finish it off after this one and then maybe #1 after that?

Every square is still there and most are still in the same position, the ones that I did move I tried to move into an area that fits well, plus a few minor adjustments to some of the squares (nothing major).

So, are we really doing a new one when the last one didn't even get finished? Why not go there and revive that one instead? linky link (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=39690-Community-Project-LBPC-Chessboard-6/page5)

I get that that one is dead, but I just don't understand why we need a new one when that one remains unfinished.

Just in case that never happens, here you go.

Holy crap, activity!

People, please see this. Please see this, and start making squares.

Oh, and the reason we're not finishing the last one is because of the board size - seeing such a giant board seems to make people overwhelmed and not want to contribute squares, seeing as barely any of them have gotten finished.

A fair point, although it probably would have made more sense to have mentioned this when we weren't over fifty squares into the game.

I get that that one is dead, but I just don't understand why we need a new one when that one remains unfinished.

Just in case that never happens, here you go.

This came up a couple of pages back and I explained my own reasons why (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=80959-Community-Chessboard-is-BACK!-7/page5), to sum up, those boards have essentially double the number of squares this board has (196 vs 100) and even this one has taken a long time to reach the halfway point. The whole point of small pixel art squares is to make filling in the chessboard quick and easy, so I feel like those giant 12x12 & 14x14 boards are simply too big and become counterproductive.

However,

Hey guys, I tried my hand at combining a couple of the chessboards together (#2 & #6), just wondering if everyone wanted to finish it off after this one and then maybe #1 after that?

Jimy, just copy the URL address of the image uploaded and put it between and .

Example (if this were a URL for an image): https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=80959-Community-Chessboard-is-BACK!-7&p=1135368#post1135368

Also, make sure your edit of the chessboard is saved as a PNG, not a JPEG. It smudges up the entire board's quality unfortunately.

And here is what yours looked like:

That's what I'm referring to by the noticeable dip in quality. I'm not sure how I could be able to change it back and keep your square, so you might have to redo it.

EDIT:

Yep, anyone can contribute. ^^ Just make sure not to post two squares in row, and make sure that it's saved to PNG and there's no sort of quality dip. (and not to overlap on people's squares or edit them unless given permission to)

I suck at spriting and all forms of art too, but that's just part of the fun! Look at the thing I did of the lower left corner of the red monster- it was supposed to be a tree on a planet, but other people turned it into a thing stuck up that poor creature's ****. Trying to mix everything, including the bad parts, together is jsut a part of the fun. SO DO IT... if you want. Artistic skill need not apply.

This is one of the few things that has made me truly laugh in a good way! Anyways, I agree! I may have contributed a square, but it has nothing (turned out to be part of the hat)! By the way, what program are most of you using to do the spriting? I used Corel Painter, but it was a bit tedious to work with...

Claiming a turn... it's been a while.

EDIT:

EDIT2: I redid one of my older squares, since it was just a downscaled image rather than pixel art and as such really didn't fit in. The image under the first edit has been changed to reflect this.

You used the wrong image as your base. Here, I stitched your square into the current chessboard.

Holy crap Ryan, something weir happened to your face on the chessboard. xD

Also yes, I'll see if I can contribute something before it all wraps up, no guarantees though.

I redrew it in pixel art . Didn't blend well at all when zoomed in what with it just being a downscaled image and all, so I figured a pixel art redo was in order.

Aww thanks, I'll be at uni all day today so if you're all happy to wait until I get home for me to finish it I'll do it this afternoon. :3

But I don't want to stop anyone else that would like to finish it.

I think, for the next one, that each person is only allowed to make one square in total. That improves on the community aspect.
What's that? It would take five years to complete!? None-sense. I say make it a tradition for all newcomers. Post a link to this thread on all future 'introduce yourselves' pages and Boom#! Chessboard will get more action than...

That would open up a wider array of styles, but new membership will be slowing down for the next few weeks/months and it's not easy to find new members who would pick up interest. Either way, a limit would be okay, I guess. 2-3?2014-08-03 05:51:00

maybe, double the size of the board and add a limit of four squares?2014-08-03 18:48:00

Eh, I tend to disagree. The way I see it imposing a limit just means locking people out. Once they reach their limit they aren't allowed to contribute any more? At least not until the next one, and let's be honest, that could be a while. Quite a while!

It's not like anyone is missing out because a few people are adding 10+ squares.

This idea I like, I'd love the newcomers to add a square, in fact I think I'll start linking here in intros myself :3

But why not do this anyway without adding a limit? Instead of locking people out after x squares and trying to compensate that with new members just get everyone adding as many squares as they like. In the end it just means more and/or bigger chessboards

Thoughts?

Well, I noticed the last quarter at least was completed by (what seemed like) the same few people so I thought it might be a helpful suggestion. I think your way of thinking is better in this case. All it needed was a bit of advertisement and I think we've found a perfect solution.

Another suggestion, may/may not be useful: Instead of starting a new thread for each board, why not expand the old one? Starting with the next one of course. Just keep it going as long as it'll go, this would obviously depend on the pace it took to build up.

I expect LBP3's release will bring in a lot of newcomers.

When's the next one starting?

Does it have to be SR20 who starts it because I could start one and manage it if he's not active as much?

Anybody can start one. If you plan on it, however, you should probably wait till the release of LBP3. There's not many active members on here at the moment

It's the case of advertisng and the friendliness of the project; you don't want to make the whole thing sound exclusive. LBP too
