Pathfollower woes

Archive: 11 posts

I really need someone to explain why I can't get objects to move with the pathfillower motor. I've created an object and made it dynamic. I've drawn a spline. I've attached the motor to it. I've attached the object to the motor. Nothing happens. I attach a battery to the motor, nothing happens. Can somebody please help before my playstation goes out if the window!2013-07-21 11:28:00

I'm not in the editor right now, but try to make the object not dynamic. You also don't need a battery or anything to connect to it for it to work. I've never had an issue with the path follower motor. Hope you get it working.2013-07-21 22:02:00

Hm... I don't know if the object has to be set to static or dynamic... but have a look at the sensors you have in your popit... I guess there's a 'pathfinder sensor' (don't know the exact english name) and attach this sensor to the object. Should work now 2013-07-23 08:32:00

I've used a pathfollower motor without any battery or sensor, set up in the way you described. I'm pretty sure I used static objects.
I would try opening a new empty level and do a test with an in game object. Just in case there's a problem with the object you made or something else in the level. I've solved a lot of create problems by testing in an empty level.
Also, have you tried playing the level - as opposed to just unpausing in create mode?

I just actually had an issue with the path follower motor not working anymore. Somehow the motor detached from the actual path that I had created. Even when I reattached it, it didn't work. So I ended up deleted the motor and creating it again. Attach it like always to the path and reconnected my object to follow the path. It worked correctly again. lol. Just an odd glitch I suppose.2013-07-27 14:46:00

Thanks for the suggestions. Guess my copy's broken somehow. I'm gonna uninstall the game data and start again from scratch to see if that sorts the prob out. I've got to say how unintuitive the create mode is. Compared to LITTLEBIGPLANET it's a nightmare.2013-07-27 20:06:00

Yep, the tutorials are absolute garbage, if they took some of the budget away from paying for yet more unfunny Stephen Fry jokes and actually spent it on important things like server maintenance and playtesting this game might not be quite so broken...

As far as your problem goes, before uninstalling everything try this:

Start a fresh level. Place an object down. Draw a simple path using the 'draw path' tool. Place your object ontop of the path at some point along, Select your pathfinder motor from the tools menu and hover it over the dotted line that shows your path until it turns green. Press X to place it down then use the analogue stick to move it forward/backward along the path. Place it in the position where it overlaps your object by pressing X a second time. Now a tack will appear that you have to connect to the object you want to move, so connect this to the object. Adjust the settings of the motor, so the time is about 20 seconds, 2 sec pause, 0 sync. Also set flipper type to IN. Press up on the D-Pad to go into live mode.

Now what should happen is your object starts travelling along the path you have drawn and when it reaches the end it stops moving for 2 seconds then returns to it's starting position. If the path you drew is a complete circuit (a circle for example) then you can remove the pause and you will have it continuously lap your drawn path!

Sorry if this all sounds a bit 'LBPK for Dummies', but as you say, thr tutorials are rubbish and at first the pathfollower motor can seem particulalry unintuitive. Finally, just another thing to ask, but you are connecting the motor to the object using the actual tack (which appears automatically when you first place the motor, but can be connected later on by clicking on the big orb at the end of the motor) not using the input/output points, right?

Thanks atheist. Working fine now. Followed your instructions to the letter and it worked! Not sure why it wasn't working before. Many thanks!2013-08-11 16:23:00

Glad you got it working fine, a lot of the tools on this game are kinda unintuitive until you know what you're doing, I struggled with the pathfinder at first as well!

Btw... fellow Bristolian! :-D
