Why dont people read game instructions?! DX

Archive: 13 posts

Hi there guys!

Just thought id vent out my frustration in the form of a post in here to see if anyone else is in the same boat.

Basically, i made a level and its a game with simple mechanics to understand.... IF YOU READ THE INSTRUCTIONS I WROTE IN GAME!!

Iv been taken random people to my level when they join me to do some shameless self promoting (obviously lol) and 90% of the people just run straight past the room with the instructions in and its making me go nuts!

Here is a pic of the instructions room:

46229

as you can see, the instructions screen is pretty large and obvious lol.

I dont wanna force people to sit through the instructions each time since i want people to be able to pass it all if they have played before.

Well thats my rant over lol. I hope im not the only one having this issue. Let me know your opinions on this.

Thanks for reading!

I feel your pain!

One way I made it more interactive was to show some of the instructions later as folks were getting into position before my survival challenge started. I felt it made more sense rather than a series a pictures. Not that many triggered them by grabbing the thing that would enable them, but if they did at least they were in the right spot. Lol

The sad truth is that many players don't want to read. I am thinking of an even more interactive way that some games utilize. Giving new features and telling how to use as you go. That might remove the headache a bit and allow them to just have fun and build on their skills and knowledge as they go.2013-07-17 16:00:00

i do have an idea in mind of how to make it visual but it would mean a lot more work DX

so annoying because its totally 100% playable right now.

you should give it a look and give me advice from what you see?

it requires 2 players though.

I was about to say that. We like a good moan when we can't figure out how things work though.

FYI, I do read instructions the majority of the time, I guess I'm not a real man?

Basically, people hate other people telling them what to do. So the trick is to make them think that they're teaching themselves, rather than you teaching them. In other words, teach through gameplay rather than a wall of text. If you want, you could set up a safe area with dummies, and you could prevent the player from moving on until you've determined that they've learned how to attack. Maybe not this specifically, but something along those lines. This helps the scenario with more experienced players, since they can just skip the "figuring out" step and kill the dummies in a couple seconds to move on.

The point is, you have to get inside their head. You have to assume they'll go with their instinct rather than use their brains.
