If you're interested in taking the plunge, there's a director's cut that's much clearer about the movie's intentions.

Otherwise, make SURE you watch the special features and, if you're interested enough, watch the movie again with commentary.

I'm not a fan of Donnie Darko. The movie's fascinating. I think it's also a bit of a fluke. Richard Kelly's a guy who fascinates me to no end, because I really don't think he belongs where he is. I've actually seen Southland Tales more than I've seen Donnie Darko (Southland Tales is one of the biggest train wrecks I've ever seen). I've devoured every interview I can about the guy. I've watched every bit of footage I can of him in his element (or should I say completely out of his element?), working on set with actors.

I think there are actors out there who would eat him alive. They'd tenderly and gently saw him to pieces with a butter knife and enjoy a slow meal (the meat is probably a bit tough, but on the plus side, it's extremely low in calories). I think this is partially why he hasn't worked with any such actors. He's played it safe.

The guy's movies are massive risks, but paradoxically I don't believe he's a very brave director. His next one is a twilight zone adaptation. I'm sure it will be QUITE safe compared to Darko and Southland. I think critics have cut him to the bone with all of their "annoying" and "frustrating" tags (there's my nerdy LBP joke for this thread).

Will I ever get tired of Richard Kelly? I don't think so. I will always see whatever movie he makes. I don't like them. I think they're all failures (Donnie Darko succeeds in a way, but as a fluke).

I think you can gather from all this my answer to your question about understanding Darko -

It's not necessary to understand Darko. You should never - ever - EVER - for a moment - for a split second, for a hair of a fraction of a breath - feel like you are dumber than the movie's writer-director because you don't get it.

That said, many have relished the quest for solutions to the problems in Darko. If you want to take the plunge, it may be a fun ride.

I'm along for very different reasons, and I will be almost useless to you if you have any questions about the time-travelling god-tunneling chicanery of a "plot".

If you have any curiosities about Richard Kelly on the other hand, ask away!

I just watched the movie. It was definitely good...but better than Cloverfield? No.

It was pretty awesome though. And they had CRAZY STEVE from Drake and Josh! YES!

One thing that I think is absolutely horrible is the Donny Darko sequel coming out, S. Darko, which follows Samantha Darko. I wish the movie industry would learn when to leave their own movies alone, and when to continue them. My favorite movie ever, Cloverfield, is most likely not getting a sequel, while Donnie Darko, which to me had a satisfying ending, is getting a sequel. And if what wikipedia tells me is true, it's pretty much a copy off of Donnie Darko, and I think will capitalize on the original's success by cloning it, well, exactly.

First off, you can't take Donnie's sister and give HER these hallucinations as well. It kind of ruins it.

Second....Welll.....It sounds exactly like the original....except with an asteroid.

I saw it some time ago and feel the urge to watch it again, but my original assessment was much like that of Teebonesy. I liked aspects of the film, but it wasn't really the time traveling that got me as I felt there were really too many holes to deal with at any point. Now, Primer... well... that's a different story.

All in all, I'm going to give it another shot and we'll see if I need to edit this post...

I always liked the movie.. very good, though you may have to watch it a few times to really understand it... Not as bad a waking life though, Ive seen that movie a thousand times and still dont fully understand everything thats going on...

but my favorite part of donnie darko is the title screen on the dvd... Like most movies have really annoying sound bites from throughout the movie looping over and over... I tend to put a movie in when im going to sleep, and that seriously gets on my nerves when im half awake and just listening to the same 7 movie phrases over and over...

Donnie darko plays a sound of a storm like kinda far away or somthing... REALLY good to sleep to.

the worst one ever was barnyard, I watched that movie one time, and theres this **** rat saying "Play tha movie" over and over again, Its god awful!

oh GOD Waking Life... that's my kind of movie...

Donnie Darko, I really like. It's good in a rare way, even if it doesn't make sense. It's one of my top favorites. I love the soundtrack, and the atmosphere most of all, I think.

Just finished watching it again and I have to agree that the movie has a great soundtrack; Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" put it over the top for me. But the holes, the holes, the holes ruin the experience for me. I'd like to say that I enjoyed it for what it was, but that would be a lie as it falls far short of what Richard Kelly hoped it would be...

I loved this film, I've watched it quite a few times and still enjoy it. Scared the hell out of me when I was 6 though! (Oh my God this film is 7 years old now!)

Sorry to break it to you, Awesomemans, but Cloverfield is probably getting a sequel. When they're on the bridge that gets destroyed, you see a guy holding a camera - he's most likely guy in the next one. Turns out Clover didn't die after the firebomb (it said that at the end of the last film at the end of the credits )

Lol...if you didn't "get" the story of Donnie Darko then you should try Inland Empire for size. It makes Donnie Darko look as simplistic as a children's ABC book.2009-09-28 21:07:00

When Darko came out a lot of critics were calling Richard Kelly "Lynch Lite" or "Diet Lynch". Seems to be rather appropriate! It's like an easy-to-stomach version of David Lynch stylistics.
