Present times in a nutshell.

The world has certainly gone mad. Reminds me of a story I read on BBC today. Much different circumstances, and much greater consequences but it's another example of how a seemingly off-hand comment can get someone in trouble.

This is the story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-23139784

So when is this "Canadian woman" going to be identified and have her account flooded with distasteful League of Legends fanart?

Apparently this guy is on suicide watch in solitary confinement now. I'm sure his time in prison won't increase the likelihood of him committing an actual crime in the future or affect his job prospects.

What? Are you saying that screwing over a kids life for a dumb, off hand comment isn't sound policy?

That's crazy talk.

Hey, that's why I don't like talking to people. You say word 7.284 instead of word 7.285 and they look at you like you are the very spawn of hell on Earth itself.

Oh yeah, let's just create new problems out of things that aren't really problems and ignore the actually important problems.

Absolutely genius.

And the kicker? He hasn't even been sentenced yet. If he gets out free, which hopefully he will... all we can hope is that he sues the department.

What the hell, he just made a sarcastic joke about something...

Why won't police pick on the real scum of the internet, those completely gone-nuts bronies? (By that i mean those creeps that... umm... well, those that like fanfics and clop)

Meh, i shouldn't be talking about that, we're not talking about bronies.

Police state, what ever happened to freedom of speech, look that's not something to joke about, but it's still just a joke in some respect, there are famous comedians that talk about rape and murder, yet we understand it as a form of comedy/sarcasm/point, what about that crazy kid that loses his temper on youtube, the one that tries shove a remote up his ***, that guy is more of a danger than an innocent kid, I feel sorry for this guy and his parents, his whole life is ruined, he will forever be shamed by the community, is that a life one must have just for a stupid joke, which could have been a form of sarcasm as I mentioned earlier, or making a point.

I wish him best of luck and his parents.

Well.. it goes back to what to joke about. Probably better to make a joke about some imaginary valley of fluffy bunnies than a group of school children these days. Worse to put it writing. ...though if the original comment actually did contain j/k etc... well, it all seems over reactive unless of course there is more to it than we really know. Especially when it comes to the news and what they write about. You never know if they are being biased or not or even telling the truth. Some of them just want the ratings and don't really care what they report.

Regardless, just shows there are people with no sense of humor and in some cases, I guess you can't really blame them if the original writer is not really joking.

That's true, it all depends on what was actually said, I'm just taking it from what was reported, but you could be right maybe there's more to it than what was said, or maybe its just a pure ratings scheme.

We'll never know...

Oh I realize that. I was just adding my two cents on the story in general and to just join in the conversation.

I truly hope it was just a joke and if that is the case, then wow... I feel so sorry for him and his family. I think that is why in part we try to keep it really light hearted around here and try to put out any flame wars, even if it takes a bit of editing. I would hate for any of you guys to be suddenly snagged for speaking out in haste, even if it was a joke. lol

..well, except maybe Rock. (and that was really a joke!!)

Yeah no I understand, I thought what you said was sort of better put than what I said, but you completely right it's better to keep things light hearted as LBPC is really a place to get away from all that and focus our interests on having a good time.

You can only have fun up to a certain point. If you step over the line you are target for immediate enforcement action, you terrorist.

Honestly, I'm surprised you managed to finish writing that sentence before you got drone strike'd. At least now no more innocent people will die.

Actually, you can talk if you want, but nobody should make threats online, even if it's a joke. This is what my mom told me - watch what you say on the internet.

Because making the same joke on the streets won't yield similar results.

What about all the mainstream rap songs out there that talk about murder, drugs, domestic violence, and rape? People are just fine with that apparently. But if a normal person says anything like that they'll most likely go to jail.2013-08-19 00:16:00

That's because they aren't threatening in the songs. People will understand that they are only jokes or fiction. But a threat online, physical, legal (lawsuit threats), or emotional, is taken seriously.

Oh, and I don't think anybody reported this kid for the threat.

This is one of those subjects that doesn't really deserve to be debated. We all know it's wrong (common sense) but instead, the people in that country should just act upon it, not give their opinions. (not necessarily referring to you guys, just saying...)2013-08-29 00:56:00
