How to makev a detailed window

Archive: 22 posts

Sorry gang that I havent been on much lately, been busy offline.

Anyway... I thought I'd do a quick window tutorial.

Windows can add a great sense of depth to your building if you add a few little graphic touches. They can change the mood of
a room or area from cheery to creepy by subtly placing shadows or lighting.

For this tutorial you will need the Move Pack for both sticker panel and window frame sticker objects
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK...Lets begin.

1. 46052
Start with the basic windows 'cut-out' shape. in one wall. In the example, here, the room is the 3 playable layers thick.
with the gap being in the middle layer.
Next is to add the actual glass. Use the grid tool to design everything, so that everything fits in neatly and is lined-up.

2.
46053
Once this 'glass' has been slid into place, glue it to the walls. However, have it in such a way that the glass is sunken into the wall,
leaving a lip. This is where our actual frame will sit.
Now, make a block of invisible sticker panel (it need to be larger than the hole, both in layers and heigh. This is so that
the frame will line up right.)

3.
4605446055
Next is to select and scale a frame sticker object. First image shows the side main frame.
The second image shows with the cross slats in place. (NOTE- To look effective, make sure that the cross slats are smaller than
the side main frame, so you wont see the pointy ends.) You can keep sliding it into place in the hole to see do the side frame
pieces merge right with the window hole. Remember, as its a sticker object you wont see the parts that are inside the walls).
A good idea for doing the frame and slats is to turn off the grid and have the angle on 90degrees, so the all are straight.

4.
46056
Now with the grid off, slide the frame into place, over ithe window. If you place it correctly, it will all fit nicely over the glass
and in the hole..
(A DESIGN TIP- we have made the frames sticker panel invisible, But, if you set its ocpacity to 100, you could use a black line
sticker to make little cracks lines. just place them on the sticker panel between the slats. Now, slide it carefully into the
window gap, but so it is in front of the glass material. Now it gives the illusion that the glass is cracked.

5. Window Light
46057
To add depth to our window, we are going to make a 'cast lighting' effect.
Make a piece of sticker panel as is in the picture.
Simply select a white square sticker and carefully sticer the panel with six white squares.
As this is a reflecvtion of the light coming through the window, you need to remember that no light passe through the
window slats. So when pasting your squares, leave gaps for where the slats would be. To get precise angle for drawing, turn
off grid squares.

46058
Lastly, set the sticker panels ocpacity to something low, like 20. and its finished.
Tips- use the white squre sticker to draw the panes as this will let you use the colours of the sticker panel to set the light colour.
instead of the 10 coloured squares stickers.
I hope the tutorial is easy to follow

There are loads of other effects for windows that can be done, but this is a good start.

I like the artificial light on the floor, that is a cool idea. I guess you could also suspend a lamp outside and have it point through the window to give extra depth to the illusion.2013-07-03 02:53:00

This is a great tutorial for any level that has buildings! I think any little details like this one go a long way in adding a hint of perfection to your level! I wonder, however, if the player might interfere with the effect of the cast lighting when it stands on it. if that was to happen aratiatia's method would work better. Anyways, thanks! 2013-07-03 17:12:00

UPDATE:- I have decided that if people are interested, I may do another graphic tutorial. Does anyone have any specific requests?
I was thinking of maybe doing :-
Lighting/Shadows tutorial,
Detailed room design tutorial,
Building a proper functioning house tutorial,
or any graphic tutorial that a person may request.

Feel free to let me know what people think.
Cheers
