Recommend a video camera for recording!

Archive: 5 posts

Hi guys,

I'd like to head out and buy myself an inexpensive videocam for making web videos, so that I can start my LBP workshop series and my guitar lessons.

I'm relatively clueless when it comes to videocams. I'm not sure if this can be done with webcam or if I should be looking for a camcorder. I'd like to be able to do HQ youtube vids.

Not looking to spend hundreds, but possibly $80-150. What can you guys recommend? Thanks in advance.

I am pretty sure you can do it with a webcam (most of my friends do this). Connect it to the computer [wireless webcam won't need this] and then start the program. Once you record, you can easily upload. The only problem you may come across is that the webcam is not a good enough quality to properly record off a TV screen (but this is only a minor problem, most can get some sort of picture.

Camcorders do have advantages;
-> You will get sound, most webcams don't have this
->You don't have to be near a computer or laptop for it to work.

That's all I can think off at the moment, and it's about the limit of my knowledge. Can't recommend any exact webcams/camcorders (I'm English so I won't recommend anything).

I just tried out a logitech orbit AF webcam, and I have to say I'm sorely disappointed what $130 (on sale from $180) buys. The image resolution is high, but the framerate was complete trash. I need something that maintains 30fps at all times, and I couldn't get that at any resolution. Even my 6 year old webcam pulled off better framerates. Perhaps its my computer, but regardless, I think camcorder it's going to be.2009-01-27 23:37:00

I use a Dazzle DVC 80 when I record, which you plug the A/V cables into and then plug the DVC into a computer. This produces high quality video and sound(though the size is small, it's perfect for Youtube). However, it is not a video camera, so you could not do the guitar lessons with it. 2009-01-27 23:59:00

I just came home with a Kodak Zi6. A $50 upgrade over the webcam and apparently the current winner in the pocket camcorder wars. Wife is hogging the TV tonight, so I'll have to post back later when I get a chance to try some LBP films.2009-01-28 02:18:00
