An Open Plea to UFG to support LBP: Karting properly!

Archive: 15 posts

So I played the beta and hated it, a completely buggy mess and consequently held off purchasing it upon release despite some of my good friends inisisting its create tools were the best things since sliced bread, even if the racing and online infrastructure was still a woeful mess. I resisted... until now that it is FREE for PS+ members as part of the Instant Game Collection.

Anyway, having spent a considerable amount of time in the create studio I am learning to love the increased freedom the game offers. For years I have been a loyalist to Modnation Racers, another UFG racing title in the Play, Create, Share ilk and have seen how poorly they have supported that game, refusing to fix ridiculous bugs or add additional functionality to an already rather impressive editing suite. Alas MNR had a much more vocal and dedicated online community than LBPK which is largely down to UFG not learning from the mistakes made with the launch of MNR, particularly regarding online connectivity and matchmaking. In fact, 7 months later and LBP:K is in an even worse state. It's only saving grace is its incredible creation tools, but what use are they if nobody is playing the game?

Online connectivity. This is a bad joke. Frequent disconnects and game freezes forcing hard resets is a staple feature of the online experience of LBP:K. Getting into a pod and jumping into races with 3 or 4 friends is a perilous experience and it's a miracle if we all stay together for more than 3 races before somebody gets kicked or suffers the dreaded PS3 freeze. The situation isn't helped by the incredibly cumbersome and ridiculous way in which the game handles matchmaking. Yes, from your pod you can choose any track of your choice, true, but after that is over you then either have to vote from THREE (my god, you are spoiling us) pre-selected choices, or else back out to the pod to start the process all over again (likely losing somebody along the way then having to spend the next 5 minutes waiting for them to re-boot the console, restart the game and connect to the LBP:K servers once again. Zzzzzzzzz).

Wouldn't it be much simpler if you either allowed online player lobbies (a setup that worked excellently in MNR) or, if that is too much like hard work, simply allow us to queue up a bunch of tracks to race, each one loaded after the next to eliminate all this pointlessly frustarting faffing about we currently have to endure.

DLC. I was actually AMAZED that not a single piece of new creative content had been released for LBP:K, simply a bunch of compatibility costumes from LBP2 and some new kart bodies but NOTHING for track creators, not even a complementary set of props! This is surprising because you couldn't go a week without new DLC for LBP2 and even MNR had a steady stream of kart, mod AND track DLC that greatly enhanced the appeal and longevity of the title. LBPK suffers from a dearth of decent props (particularly foliage, the one major element I miss greatly from MNR) and what's worse is that an awful lot of it's content is simply recycled from LBP and LBP2, particularly stickers and decorations. I bought the Timesaver pack because I wanted to dive straight into the full track create experience and was more than a little dissapointed to see that there was not a great deal of 'NEW' content available anyway.

Of course the saving grace is that you can make ANYTHING yourself and then give it away in prize bubbles, so expect to see levels in the future that comprise of nothing more than themed props that UFG/SD Studio's couldn't be bothered to make for themselves. They'll likely be better too. :smileyhappy:

However, if I have one wish it's simply a foliage pack, just import the models over from MNR if need be, I've made some myself but unfortunately due to the fact they contain many branches (the single decent realistic foliage prop they gave us) it uses about 2% of the thermo for EACH one, which is frankly ridiculous and unwieldy. It comes to something when the most realistic looking object you can use to replicate a tree is a piece of fricking brocolli!

Another problem is the freezing within the track studio, which happens far too frequently for my liking, either when capturing an object or often when leaving to return to the pod. Admittedly it does seem to be more frequent when the thermo is beyond 75%, but still, this game is seriously unstable. In all my time spent in the MNR create studio (I published over 100 tracks) I had it freeze on me maybe 2 or 3 times over three years. In the 8 days I've so far spent within LBP:K's studio I've had over a DOZEN catastrophic freezes! Something is definitely not right.

Something else that has only recently become apparent to me but has been reported by others is hearting. My friends seem to think that it's by design that you can only heart 30 other creations but surely this is yet another oversight by the coding team and something that is easily fixable. There was no hearting limit on LBP2 was there? So why on Earth would there be a restriction like that on here?

And finally... Team Picks. If you are going to inisist that players can only vote for Team Picks or UFG originals at the end of an online race then you need to make sure you are updating a lot more frequently, every month would probably suffice, just make sure you do it as a matter of priority.

I'm hopeful that because the game is now free on PS+ for the next year you guys are going to support it properly, considering the increased traffic likely to be generated, but if you don't then all of these issues we report (particulalrly the online connectivity) will simply get worse and worse and drive a new batch of players away in disgust. Even the players who find create mode excellent uniformly agree that the online element of racing is abysmally conceived and needs a MAJOR overhaul to prevent the game becoming a veritable ghost town.

So, in summary:

Online connectivity - better matchmaking, more stable connections, increased track choice options, queue ability, online lobbies.
DLC. Need more create studio content, particularly better foliage options.
Hearting creations - fix the limitations.
Game freezing in create studio - Fix!
Team Picks - Change every 30 days

Whether this gets read by anyone connected with the game or not it would be great if you guys, as a community, would comment on what you feel needs to be improved and share your experiences of this game and hopefully provide enough incentive for UFG to implement these fixes to rescue what could still become a very good game.

Thanks

I fully agree with you.

The game had so much potential in the beginning, but now it seems that a big chance was wasted.

Due to lack of advertising and without UFG's support this game is going to die very quick.

I wonder that they haven't fixed the game yet after so much time and all the feedback from the community.

UFG has started a beta, but they didn't patch everything. This is a big step backward for UFG.

I really like your post, but I don't think UFG's checking LBPC so they won't know about it.

I suggest to post this on the official PlayStation forums.

You would have a higher chance that ConfusedKartman or someone else from UFG will see it.

I think they must improve the search system too. The filters they made are absolutely useless. Weather you choose cool level, most hearted level, more played level of the week, the month or general, that's the same. They must add a filter to know wich are the most liked, played, or rated levels that are new.2013-06-29 19:35:00

I agree with almost everything.

When I choose quick play i always get in a game with a least one player i already know. Feels like there are only 100 people playing it. Its a shame and not motivating me at all to spend 100+ hours to create a level.

The game disconnects and freezes way to often and it takes like 3 minutes to restart the game. Its really annoying.

The branch leaf...i dont know if i should love or hate it. its my favourite and most used object because its the most realistic looking one but it kills my thermo, creating lags etc.

Could add so much more, still love the game

All I want is for the freezing to stop. I can deal with every other problem in this broken beauty of a game if I didn't have a freeze every other time I use the program. They just patched the game and it still freezes when I try to go into "Settings"! I love LBPK since it's the only LBP title that I can confidently create anything in, but the freezes are unacceptable.2013-07-12 13:11:00

I agree 100% with everything you said! The freezing in create mode is my biggest problem! Hopefully they will address these problems with 1 good update... that doesn't have anything to do w/ costumes!!!! Wishful thinking.2013-07-21 21:52:00

I'm really disappointed of this game. I bought lbpk in November last year at a price of 59 dollars, nine months have passed and there has not been a major update of the software.

I have spent a lot of time fixing stupid problems in the editor. I am astonished to see such obvious errors that occur when I'm creating a level and many times I've been angry and had wanted to leave this game and do something else. MNR had a good online system, LBPK has a awful online system, in all that I agree with atheistsw. It's a shame that a game with so much potential has failed to maintain a community not happy. The creators move because likes to create, but there are not powerful incentives to make these creators keep working, there is no incentive when a good job that takes 200 hours is only seen by friends, while a no good job is recommended as a level to play online. In MNR had a good way to participate as creator, in LBPK the award is so arbitrary as the bugs in the editor.

Personally the game doesn't crash that much for me in create mode after the 1.13 update. But I think if they do anything they should change all the controls in create mode. Considering the controls in create are so bad its almost impossible to be in a creative mood without getting pist off and quitting the game. A couple of thing I noticed that I simply Hate is the Grid always moves to where your player is located. Example: if I try to Build a wall out of wood with grid on and make a cutout for a door & window then try to build a window inside the cutouts the grid will be off by a couple inches making the window when built off the original grid for the wall. Meaning the Grid moves every time you try to build a new object making the grid off by a couple inches every time you place something.2013-09-09 19:17:00

Change composents as General settings much better on LBP 1 and 2 on k.
example
-that the adjustment of the material that allows the use of fire or lightning without it being dangerous.
(I create a starwars and not use the eclairs on karts at the risk of a bug in the game and especially the level set level)
Some were better adjustment on LBP 1 and 2 and lack of lbpk.
example
the displacer, much more intuitive rotary bolts on LBP 1 and 2 not to mention the bolts without training.
A-repair by a click of the joystick could help straighten the matter horizontal or vertical automatically.
The decoupage-automatic material or through a striping as LBP1 and 2.
-The bug of objects that remain as a cavity while the latter has been erased.
The bug-chips that continually opens and do bugger the game and takes the thermostat unnecessarily when they are open or not disappear after deletion.
Above-like LBP or 1.2 k and it is the lack of clear possibiliter in Favorits material level of those we have not utilized and still if we had the misfortune of save and takes up space unnecessarily, stickers, objects, materials or staples.

Actually, Sony takes care of LBPK, not UFG.
Sony controls the servers, updates and what not.
So UFG is standing on the sideline and watching sony ignore LBPK.
Must be hard for them.

OK, old thread but I'm saying still a very valid point. Especially with LBP3 in the (not-to-distant) future.

To abandon LBP Karting is to tarnish the entire LBP franchise!! Don't wash your hands and walk away.

Much like the OP I was in the Beta and nearly ground my teeth to nubs dealing with the lack of polish & frustration in the Beta.

When I search for answers, videos and the like for this game (post release) I get nothing official. The only Official stuff is the typical marketing and PR BS!!!

There was and is an opportunity to get excitement on this game post-release. But those in charge can't sit on their hands and let the Community do all the work.

Where's all the post release support? Contests? Giveaways? Videos? Tutorials? New Karts? New Official Levels? Why not go nuts and pull this one out of the dumper?

Don't let LBP Karting, which is a direct reflection on all LBP games, go down in the history books as a mistake, a goof, a one-off!

Yup, I agree wholeheartedly. Ever since I was a kid, I've always wanted a game where you could create your own "racing game". Level editors in other kart racers don't do too well and ModNation was close, but still not there. As a result, I had high hopes for LBPK which were let down. While it seems like you can make anything in this game, it still feels really limited; a feeling you don't get when playing LBP2. It could've been so much more, but it feels like a rushed, unpolished, ModNation x LBP clone.

I bought this game for 60 dollars when it first came out. When I go back to the Walmart I got it from a year later, it's already in the 10 dollar bin. That really says something when a game goes to the "low price bins" within a year.

While I haven't encountered as many glitches as other people seem to be facing, there are still some pretty bad ones. On top of that, I've noticed that the other LBP games pay close attention to details while this one doesn't really seem to. (Like saving your place in a text search queue, or not having your poppit reset itself every time you go back into the tools, NOT having pages of DLC shoved into your face when you're browsing costumes, etc).

Quite frankly, I don't really think they care about this game enough to fix anything about it.
