The Last of Us - Online Multiplayer

Archive: 20 posts

This thread is to focus on the multiplayer side of The Last of Us. So no spoilers for the single player game here please.
To get those two gold trophies at the bottom of the trophy list you'll need to play a lot of online matches, a minimum of 168 I believe. You need to keep your camp alive. You do this in three ways essentially, be good at the game, work as a team in each match and don't abandon matches.

Obviously winning games will make things far easier and more fun, so this thread is for sharing strategies and tactics as well as anything else related to the online mode. The game allows for a lot of different play styles, so I'll be interested to see what people come up with.

Ok, I'll start off with a few ideas that seem to work. If you use the Covert 2 skill you start each round with a shiv and it also lets you crouch-walk without showing up on an opponent?s Listen Mode tracking. Pretty handy. So if one of the other team is taken down, wait for one of their allies to come along to revive them. Once they've come to the rescue, charge out of cover and take them out with triangle from behind. Of course running makes you show up on the radar but they'll generally be so focused on reviving that they're unlikely to notice you if you come from behind. This means you can get two quick executions in a row. Completely taking out half of a whole team if you're playing Survivors mode, well worth the risk I think. Or of course, throwing a molotov or bomb would be particularly effective as well.

As for general tactics, I'd say always try to keep one or two of your allies in view, so that they can potentially revive you and you them and you can assist each other when it all goes crazy. Run off on your own and you'll be dead 9 times out of 10. Also, use listen mode. A lot. This will save your life when you spot enemies getting ready to flank you from behind a building or wall. Make use and abuse the molotovs and bombs. If well placed they can take out a whole team, or flush enemies out of cover. I haven't worked out what my favourite weapons are yet, but I don't think the shorty is worth using, very short range and lacking in power.

Thanks all, looking forward to reading your thoughts.

I haven't completed single player yet... or started multiplayer... but I'm interested in playing with others from Central.

Maybe we should have a list of people with the game so we can play together?

Really? That blows. I was planning on dipping into multiplayer when I finished the game, but I'm not an avid online gamer. But I had hoped to get the plat, as I have with the 3 Uncharted games.

The multiplayer is a lot of fun though, it's not generic bolt on stuff like Tomb Raider online, they really put a lot of thought into this. If you can find a good team of friends and have some mics it should be a lot of fun. If you make a list, feel free to add me to it, Dave.

I love the multiplayer! I'm a Hunter and my fave weapon is the semi-auto rifle. I'm decent at it.2013-06-18 22:57:00

We only need 8 people and we got 2 full teams so we can play a match. Or 4 people and we could face some random people.

I'll add you on PSN next time I'm on.

I'm somewhat addicted to the multiplayer now. Tip, Survivor Mode is the best way to get a ton of supplies for each day to keep survivors in your group alive, I can sometimes get 80 to 100 supplies a match if I'm lucky. Also, always grab the tool boxes you see, never know what might come in handy, plus molotovs are fun to use. XD2013-06-19 03:16:00

I'm usually pretty horrible at competive multiplayer junk, but I've had quite a lot of fun with this. It's very tactical and focused on co-op. I also love to sneak around with my trusty bow and take people out from behind, or end people with a well-aimed bottle of fire.

It's totally great IMO

I've just acquired the bow in the story mode. Have only fired 1 arrow, but oh my was it a lovely feeling when the arrow went straight in the clicker's head. I couldn't help but feel slightly aroused.

I've decided that adding silencers to weapons probably isn't worth the two extra loadout points. Unless you're one of those snipers that prefers to choose one spot and stick to it. I've recently aquired the ability to heal team mates and it's great, gives you lots more supplies and of course it keeps your team strong and healthy, well worth considering!2013-06-25 11:37:00

Ugh... it's not ruined by bloody campers is it?

In my opinion, no. Teams need to generally stick together to win, so people who choose one spot and stick to it for an entire game will often end up messing it up for their team as they're not supporting them properly. You need to be able to revive your team and also be close enough for them to revive you when things go wrong. Plus you need to collect supplies as you head across the map.

Some people try to play it like Call of Duty, but it never works out well for them.

No there are no campers, and I agree with you LT, there is no real purpose for silencers I feel as well when your loadout points can benefit you in better ways. This game is more teambased so you can't really go around and camp or try to be a one man army. You have to stick with your team if you want to live and get supplies to support your clan.
My perks I usually use are Reviver 3, Healer 2, and Crafter 3. I also sometimes exhachange Crafter 3 with Covert Ops 2 from time to time but rarely anymore since I have a large clan to look after.

To be honest I was a tad bit annoued that listen mode is in the multiplayer. I feel like it detracts from the experince, might just be me though...2013-06-25 19:49:00

Meh I don't mind it really anymore actually can be helpful especially when it becomes a 2 v 4 situation. But I would say it would be a smart move to add a Raid and Survivor mode that doesn't have it so that those who do not like it can play without it.
Shockingly I've somehow managed to get 127 clan members. I find that impressive since it's a pain to get a clan over 100 members from my experience. Now I just need to beat the multiplayer 12 weeks again to get the last multiplayer trophy I need and finish with 85 clan members at least to finish unlocking everything. I like the multiplayer but I feel like the clan anymore is a nuisance and a chore after awhile.

Played 4 or 5 games so far. Lost every game, and in every game the opposing team had FAR better ranked players. Balancing is horrible!2013-07-10 23:04:00

I wouldn't say ranks are all that important in this game since they either stand for the number of weeks you've completed or the number of challenges you've completed (haven't found anything to confirm which it is), and you don't really need to be terribly good to complete weeks or challenges. Really I feel this game comes down to teamwork especially with Survivor. So if your team doesn't work together, well it's not going to end well. I've come across some high ranking players that my team just destroyed because of how we worked together.
Of course I'm not saying ranks are not unimportant on how good a player plays just that with this game balancing it with ranking is a bit tougher to do since ranking just doesn't seem to be as big of a factor that determines how good someone is all the time.

I'm guessing higher ranks come with better perks (as per most MP games)? So this would probably be the main factor?

I did have one rather annoying game of the Survival mode type game thingy (where you have 1 life each round). We went 4-0 up and still ended up losing!

Well there isn't many perks you miss out on at low level, though you do unlock like level 2 or level 3's of perks of course. Some of course are pretty over powered or more useful (explosive expert 2 is OP, while something like Covert Ops 3 is useful so the other team can't see you in hearing mode while crouch walking).

The thing I have an issue with multiplayer is that in order to unlock all the customization items like the helmets, hats, emblems, and masks. Which means you need to get 120 clan members and by the end of week 12 have a minimum of 107 clan members. This becomes an issue though because the higher you clan group number is the more supplies you need and when you basically just destroy the enemy team, you'll never reach the supply amount you need. You literally have to hope that if your team is winning, that the enemy team with make some comeback.
