Invisible Material... not an option.
Archive: 10 posts
I didn't want to put this in the "I wish this material was in it" thread because I find threads like that just too long to go through, and because I'm hoping maybe someone might have a suggestion to help. I know you can get dark matter to be invisible if you make it as thin as possible, but this just isn't working for the applications I need. The problem is that every time I try to get something to appear to be floating (without being tied with string or something), I have to use dark matter which only floats where placed. What I'm trying to achieve is an effect where I have an object float through the scene left to right (or vice versa) rigged to a dolly from above just out of camera view. On the dolly is a rig that is hooked up to the object via a piston that makes it bob up and down as it moves through the camera frame. If I use dark matter, it won't move. If I use glass, you can see the reflections of it and even the shadows since we don't have access to a truly clear glass material. What we really need is an invisible material.... or the ability to tweak our glass so it's truly tranparent. Anyone else have this problem and figured out a way around it? | 2009-01-26 12:20:00 Author: Rustbukkit Posts: 1737 |
If you have two pieces of material in the thick planes glued together (let's say they are in the closest plane and the middle one) you can then slide a piece of thin material between the two without the original two parts being seperate. Using this concept you can do all sorts of tricky things and just hide the mechanics behind a screen. A good famous level that uses this concept well is Razhotep's Tomb (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5517) by aer0blue. It's quite a good level overall but he uses this trick a few times to have things "float" without any visible strings. | 2009-01-26 12:34:00 Author: Elbee23 Posts: 1280 |

I remember that level but didn't recall the part your talking about until I just went and re-played it a few minutes ago. Still not quite sure how it was done, but I'll go to my level and see what I can do with the concept your talking about. Thanks very much for the input. I'll let you know how it worked out for me. | 2009-01-26 22:24:00 Author: Rustbukkit Posts: 1737 |
Personally, I'd like to see Dark Matter be tweakable to be invisible. It would be visible in edit mode, but not in play mode. Or something like that. For that matter, several things should have the option of being invisible (pistons for instance). I've seen many occasions where these things just look out of place. | 2009-01-26 23:22:00 Author: gameguy888 Posts: 159 |
you can make any material invisible by making a very thin long line of the material, rotating it 45 degrees then shrinking it - eventually it'll become invisible. This includes destructable (so invisible walls disappear, but you have to wire it before you shrink it) and hazards (good for blocking areas with gas but without that dam noise, once again make it a hazard before you shrink it) | 2009-01-26 23:51:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
rubber is a second material that you can make invisable, thus you can achieve the effect that you wanted. problem solved. but turning things invisable would be ice but i doubt MM doing it. Cheers! | 2009-01-27 00:37:00 Author: RAINFIRE Posts: 1101 |

Works like a charm! The method Elbee suggested is a good one, but I need my material to float further away from the wall than that method will alow... so it seems this is the only method that seems to work for that. I'll check out playing with the rubber too... thanks for the heads up on that RAINFIRE. All your suggestions are really appreciated, and I've now been able to accomplish the desired effect I'm going for! Man I love this community! Thanks A LOT folks!! | 2009-01-27 00:54:00 Author: Rustbukkit Posts: 1737 |
Dark Matter should have just been invisible. Reason 1: It's invisible in real life Reason 2: Dark matter looks stupid. And Dark Matter levels suck. Plus, in the introduction level, you get trapped when you have to watch the video by invisible stuff. | 2009-01-27 01:48:00 Author: qrtda235566 Posts: 3664 |

Agreed, the only flaw in the above methods of making things invisible is that that they're invisible (Duh) making them useful but hard to work with. If the materials were visible in create mode but not in play mode...that would save so much effort | 2009-01-27 10:39:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
The rounded soft objects have a higher invisibility point, making a thin strip of glass then changing it to rubber will make it invisible. Also, you can make an invisible rod by using piston with a minimum of 0 and attaching a magnet switch. pistons can travel through objects. | 2009-01-27 11:19:00 Author: accordion Posts: 76 |
