HAUS

Meet Haushalt Anlage und Sicherheit, or HAUS. He is a prototype household operating system and he handles everything from cleaning to operating dangerous machinery. Inspired by German modernist architecture, I created a new level set in the most mundane of settings.

Don't let that fool you though! This level is more than just visuals. Operating psychic manipulator units, you must navigate the seemingly safe house. Inspired by layer shifting puzzles in my LBPV1 entry, I created a level based around R stick gameplay. Although the mechanic isn't new, I promise that there are several original, polished and most importantly FUN obstacles. This level isn't nearly as difficult as some of my other levels get, but it should still provide a challenge. You need to think before acting: HAUS is a shrewd AI. The level should take around 10 minutes to beat I think.

This level also features my best visuals to date and the best writing and voice acting out of all of my levels. SLS10 did a very good job with the voice acting, offering his best, most consistent and hilarious performance yet. Unlike some of my other levels, the voice acting feels very appropriate here. However, should you want to skip it there is an option. There are also several easter eggs, both hidden in the level and in the details.

This is the first of a series of three levels. I can't promise when the next one will be out, but I'm a decent amount into it. So, have fun! I've been working on this (if sometimes sporadically) since December, and I put effort into making this my best level yet. Additionally, it also has the most logic out of all of my LBP2 levels. You'd be surprised how much there is to the second part of the level.

I'd like to extend a special thanks to SLS10 for his voice acting, humour, music and most of all being a good friend when I needed it. I'd also like to thank squid2723 for honest, helpful feelback and for also being a cool guy. Thanks to all my testers as well!

And it's not clear yet, but this is easily the darkest level I have.

Also, here is a spoiler for the second level:

Well, sporadically over a half a year. A lot of things happened between December and June and I didn't have a huge amount of time or motivation necessary to complete it. The first part of the level was finished around February, but the Indignity Zone took a while.

I forgot to point out that this is much better single player. Funnily enough, it isn't laggy multiplayer, but because the sub level is also maxed out it will potentially kick other players.

wow, so much eye candy! I better not die a lot in this one! queued.

This shouldn't be too hard. It's my easiest serious platformer. Some parts are tricky, but I'm generous with infinite lives.

It was fun to play. Great work

Thanks!

This is a gorgeous looking level, the stunning details just remind me of what a lazy creator I am, der voice acting/dialogue is really really funny und good, and on top of all that it's a level that's just a lots of fun to play.2013-06-16 00:52:00

Thanks!

Only 50% of people have been able to make it to the second part. I know I warned people about multiplayer issues with the level links, but has anyone had an issue with the level link simply not loading properly single player? Also, some tools are rating down all of the reviews. Thanks, whoever you are!

Why, that was me and my sub-accounts. If you guys can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen.

Anyway, brilliant level. I have to say the best part was the voice acting, which was some of the best in LBP2, seconded by the visuals, also some of the best in LBP2. I love all the little touches of detail, especially the warnings getting aggravated when you kept jumping on the black metal. Doubtless you've hidden a ton of other easter eggs I haven't found yet.

Actually it was squid2723 so he could get the top position. At least he was honest.

How many times did you jump on it, because there's more. Jump on it enough times and you will get the bad ending to the level. Also, thanks.

This level is extremely hard? :U That's a bit worrying. Thanks!

There was initially more, but a lot of it was removed to make the level more appropriate. Most of it was KMFDM references anyway so it's not a huge loss to the one of you who knows who K?pt'n K is.2013-06-17 23:39:00

Turns out I'm super-great at voice acting.

But yeah! S'good to see the first part of this finally being spawned. Might come out of my angsty hiatus to play it.

Indeed you are. Time for me to start writing the dialogue for the next level.

Just letting people know that I made a few changes. All of the R stick obstacles are much more responsive now. Additionally, I have added a few checkpoints near the trickier areas. The level should be a bit smoother now, and also a wee bit easier. Remember, the level link in this level will kick multiple players if they aren't local.

Also, thanks for the spotlight.

Great level. The whole package was well crafted and contained some A+ voice acting. The voice work really tied the whole thing together and managed to keep a smile on my face the entire time I played. In fact, I’m smiling now thinking about Haus. I loved your attention to detail throughout and material choices. There was only one part that was a tad difficult at first and that was only because I didn’t see the solution until I died about 20x trying to force my own solution. It was the part where you had to drop to floors down to grab ceiling and move to the right and use bounce pads to get back to the top. I really like the way you utilized the right stick gameplay and I’m seriously thinking of stealing some of your ideas here! Great job and I’m looking forward to the next installments.2013-06-26 17:46:00

Just noticed that some of the prizes for acing the level are already given on beating the level. That's not very good.2013-06-29 00:57:00

I have no clue what I gave as prizes. I must of did it when I was tired as heck / incapacitated. I'll probably remove them as there's nothing in the level worth giving away aside for a few joke prizes. That's actually why there are doubles anyway.

(To be perfectly honest, I do not care much about prizes)

Here are some impressions based on several playthroughs.

Let's start with the haus...er... house (Entschuldigung, Ich spreche night gut Deutsch). It's gorgeously decorated down to minute details, and it has a great charm of its own. I can't imagine how long it must have taken you to put together rooms full of laptops with USB ports you can barely see, or putting together artwork that matches the house's stylish interior. The level looks fantastic, but then again even the carpets have more dignity than me, so that shouldn't be a real surprise.

Speaking of dignity, the voice acting and the lines are phenomenal. I particularly enjoyed the reminder that this is in fact a house, and not a home SLS10 adds some great character to this fiendish automaton, and I sat in several spots just listening to the voice acting.... and then I went and hugged the ottoman. Repeatedly.

I'd played the level previously, and encountered some difficulty some of the right stick movements, but I didn't have any issues this time. The hardest one for me is the jump over the swinging bar where you have to move the platform midair, as swapping my hand over to the right stick mid jump doesn't feel natural to me; but in general, the obstacles in this punitive zone present a good challenge and don't feel punishing to complete.

There are however two sections which didn't feel entirely fair - the carpet lighting on fire, and the shutdown closing. I was standing on the carpet listening to HAUS when it burst into flames, something I didn't see coming despite my username. Additionally, I jumped left as HAUS closed the shutdown door with a cutscene camera, and was propelled into the black metal waiting for me there.

And now, for some minor gripes:

As mentioned previously, the house is gorgeous, which confuses me a bit at the choice to use stickers for the emergency shutdown. The HAUS logo is right next to this lettering, and this sign is an odd contrast compared to the clean style everything else exhibits.

Additonally, there was a bug I encountered in my first playthrough. After grabbing the fourth (top left) crystal, I died and the level ended. The level was pretty much over at that point, but something stopped me from spawning in the annex again.

Overall, this is a lovely house to visit, and a fun level to play through. Congratulations on the spotlight, it was well deserved.

Yeah, that first section was kinda a cheap joke that I kept in. It's unfair, but with quick reflexes people are able to survive it. I wasn't aware of that second issue though. Did you jump left during the one period in the cutscene you could control the player?

That was admittedly laziness on my part. At this point I cannot add anything to the first part though, but I will aim for more stylistic consistency in the next two levels.

Hmm, I thought I solved that. I'm going to take a look at that, as it's supposed to activate a different checkpoint once you grab the final crystal, regardless of order. I might have it set up so that you need to be teleported first, which is the cause of that. I'mma go fix that.

Okay, I fixed the bug where you could get a game over if you die after collecting the final crystal. You still make it to the final hub, but with a mild... detour. Hooray, no more level breaking glitches.2013-07-05 00:43:00

This level... Oh. My. God.

I would review this like I review most levels... But the way this level affected me prevents me from doing that here. Expect me to review this in my thread in the "Reviews" section.
