The Cryptic Crypts
Another Arabian Night (http://lbp.me/v/kxp6wc)

Imagine waking up in the Great Hall of an Arabian Palace with no idea of who you are, or why you are there. Exploring the rooms yields puzzling challenges, curious books and a strange series of encounters with the gods themselves.

Another Arabian Night is the second Cryptic Crypts level and the first on LBP2, this new level expands on the play style of the original with a greater number of mechanical, logical and downright tricky puzzles. Alongside the 32 new puzzles is a master-puzzle in which you must return to the Eastern and Western Shrines with new information to help decipher the the meanings of mystical orbs and call for aid from the gods.

Ending with an epic quest to find wisdom, Another Arabian Nights features different endings depending on whether you solve the final mystery and escape the crypts. With eight original music tracks to listen to, an original story and eight specially written poems Another Arabian Nights is my most immersive level so far.

As always there's the obligatory Interactive Ace Trophy and an extra Level Complete version which give hints to finding bonus bubbles in the level. All eight of the main tracks are included as prizes of course, they just aren't easy to get.

Fair warning here, this level is difficult, and not in a trying to jump onto a tiny platform way. You will really have to stretch your brain in order to get through to the end, and stretch it further to get the 'perfect' ending. If you laugh at the ineptitude of contestants on The Crystal Maze or Million Dollar Mind Game then this is your kind of puzzle game.

A Key Conundrum

Ok, allright already, sales spiel over. If you're reading this far you're probably going to give it a go, so in true puzzle style I've hidden the useful stuff down here! You are advised to read every book you can, and make notes if your memory is anything like mine, especially any words in capital letters. You'll need a decent grasp of English as there's lots of reading and a few word puzzles, Maths basic adding and subtracting, plus knowing how to square a number and of course Fairy Tales.

One more hint then, If it looks like it needs to be moved, you can probably grab it, even if it isn't sponge.

This more or less fried my brain in the playtesting so I really hope you all enjoy it. I love using creative logic, but sometimes I was just staring at the screen blankly trying to work out what had gone wrong. It generally turned out to be an and instead of an or, or sa timer set to start/stop instead of count up. Anyway, why was I here, oh yes. Someone left a coment that they couldn't get past puzzle four. Ive replied with advice, but have also changed it's name to give a bigger hint to the method of solution. Should be easy now, muahhahahaha.2013-06-10 22:04:00

Okay, I just played this again. I got up to the part where I had to put letters into a slot underwater during the icy phase. One of the letters broke so it was impossible to beat.

Now, first of all, it's a shame Ungreth can't play this level. He'd love the crap out of it. Second, the difficulty was quite erratic. A lot of the puzzles were too difficult or too easy, rarely in between. Here are puzzles I really didn't like:

1. The second (the pendulum). It was just rather weird. I would prefer you swinging the blade into the rope than yourself.
2. The third (the statues). I probably would have never been able to figure it out if it weren't for you, and the same will go with a lot of people. While I can see how "blue bell" is a phrase, I still don't know how "green vase" is any more of a phrase than "red vase" or "white vase". "Red apple" could also be "green apple".
3. The fourth (the key). It was strange and confusing and I beat it completely by accident. I still don't know how it works, and I dread doing it again on the replay.
4. The fifth (the room with the doll, boll, and lettered blocks). I still don't know how "rat" has a meaning to the story. If you were just meant to put the right blocks in front of the right windows it's still a little dumb.
5. Arranging the star (don't know number). I thought the level was broken and before I realized you had to put in the pieces in through the top I was about to quit. You give no visual indication of this. Still, it's a rather easy puzzle.
5. Putting letters into the slot, for the reasons mentioned at the top of my post. Put some material tweakers set to "Indestructible" on them.

That said, I did like reading all the lore of the bookcases, and I especially enjoyed solving puzzles from them. Many of the puzzles were quite creative, and satisfying to solve, especially the Fibonacci scarab and the clocks. I think my main complaint here is that a lot of the puzzles were quite unfair, the third one most of all. You should try fixing them.

I'm really just going to need to be able to dedicate a weekend to this. XD I only have a scant few hours in weekday afternoons to try other levels and fix my own. Puzzle 1 was easy.

Pendulum: I didn't get the hint but it solved itself anyway.

Statues: Clue didn't help. I only solved by trial and error. I think this one would benefit, for so early on, from the items actually being the color of the lights.

Key Painting: I solved this one instantly, since I've made one myself, but how about for the clue "A Golden Key, Glowing All Over"

Toy Room: Solved this one but only after immense finagling. You seriously need grabinators here. I thought the solution couldn't possibly be what it was because there's no way to guarantee the player will pull the blocks in the right order. And I didn't at first. And it took me a long time to jump and drag boxes over each other without grabinators.

Very nice level!
I like it a lot. Unfortunately I didn't understand the fifth riddle so I didn't finished it.
Nevertheless it's a cool level

Firstly apologies to anyone that got stumped by the first couple of puzzles. Some things that an obsessive puzzle fan like me would be looking for like obscure references to campanology - honestly it's a real thing - and knowledge of certain colour conventions, might not be on top of everyones list of fun thing to know.

On the other hand it's brilliant to get feedback on a puzzle like this, I tested the colour related puzzle on some work colleagues, blank looks all round. So I've been toiling away to make a few changes, especially those suggested by Kalawishis, who got very near the end when something important broke.

I have made changes, but the overall difficulty is much the same, for every puzzle thats easier, something later on is harder. Here's the full list of changes.

Puzzle 2 - Campanology now has instructional doodles on the walls and is now called 'The Bells, The Bells'
Puzzle 3 - Four Colourful Statues has been replaced with a slightly harder version of Puzzle 11 - Midnight at Midday and is now called 'By The Light of Midnight'
Puzzle 4 - A Key Conundrum has been replaced with a slightly different version of Puzzle 17 - Broken Star
Puzzle 6 - Where There's A Window has new decorations, indestructible blocks and grabinators.
Puzzle 11 - Midnight at Midday has been replaced with a very slightly easier version of 'A Key Conundrum' and is now called 'Illuminating The Key'.
Puzzle 17 - A Broken Star has been replaced with a new puzzle with the same evil idea 'Five Colourful Paintings' although there are now only two colour options for each picture.
Puzzle 19 - Switchstone has had some visual tweaks.
Puzzle 25 - Submerged Maze has had some visual tweaks, the important part of the bar is now indestructible.
Puzzle 26 - Sunken Rollers is now harder to navigate, the rollers no longer reset themselves, and it actually awards points when you complete it like it's supposed to.
Puzzle 27 - Cave of Wonders has indestructible blocks instead of temperamental tiles. There are also some visual tweaks.
Puzzle 28 - Hall of Dice now has indestructible blocks.
Puzzle 31 - Disappearing Act is now slightly easier.
Final Quest - Nocturnes Puzzle is now harder.

Phew, hopefully that makes everyones journeys a bit more fun.

Before I forget, I want to applaud you for the huge amount of work and thought you've put into this. It really takes a lot of time and effort to not only think up puzzles like these, but to test them out, double check the logic, and tidy up the chain of events. I'm sure you probably got a headache or two getting it all down. XD So just know that so far as is, the efforts put into this are extraordinary, and get a Kato Baby Seal of approval.

BEAT THIS THING!
I have to say this was quite a brain strain. As in, it was one of the hardest puzzle levels I've played. I mean, Jesus, it was hard. However, I managed to pass every puzzle using only myself and an anagram finding website. And now, for the feedback.

1. I have to say my favorite puzzles were the Hall of Dice and the Disappearing Act. Hall of Dice was just great, probably the best one. It felt so satisfying to solve everything with a pencil and paper. And the exponents? Genius! One complaint I have is that I can't see the numbers below the dice slots very well, and didn't notice them until halfway through the puzzle. Until then, I thought I had to make 36 somehow.
Disappearing act was also quite clever, although it can sometimes be cumbersome to "appear" and "disappear".

2. I enjoyed the backtracking quizzes at the end enormously, although some questions were downright unfair. I don't think anyone would be able to memorize the number of triangles. While I enjoyed it, I think the questions might be to unfair to others. I also don't know how they affect anything. I only got 4 out of 6 right and still got to finish.

3. The ending made me a little depressed when I thought about it.

4. My main complaint, again, is the sheer erraticness of the difficulty. The puzzles were all over the place. The third puzzle was the hardest of all, the labyrinth was harder than the scarab despite being further in the game, and there seemed to be no learning curve. I suggest you reorder the puzzles from easiest to hardest.

5. I also found more puzzles I didn't like. Labyrinth was a test of skill, not brains. The final trivia was too hard and your score didn't seem to affect anything. Don't refer to fire as the "Great Power". It confused me and resulted in me pulling orbs back and forth for hours. Pulling around the circles underwater was so tedious it make me want to punch my dog.

But still, I really enjoyed this. It was satisfying and unique to LBP. Seriously, Ungreth should play this. He'd totally die of happiness.

Awesome opening post qusion. From the "Colour your Dreams" series to anything zynax555 does, I've always loved running into some good old fashion puzzle levels. Like bio said, very nice job on the advertising. Here are my thoughts below, and sorry if it drags out. (it usually does. I try to, well, review it while I play it.) I guess it's just how I like to review.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The level opens with one of my favorite tunes in all of LBP. Seriously, this mysteriously chill tune takes me straight back to some of my favorite levels of the game, like "the somnium" by angel-punishment, as well as some other goodies. The opening subtitles, as well the cool logo (Love your "Qusion" trademark by the way) are a nice way to start the level, along with the great choice of music of course. The design already has me greatly interested. By making the level dark and choosing such a beautiful tune, you don't have to go too heavy on details, and yet, the beautiful stain-glass windows give the place a very unique feel. Artistic direction over graphical overload, it might seem. Even when the lights turn on, material variation doesn't go too far, while keeping the level a beauty to look at, which is a good sign of thermometer practicality.

I like how each puzzle gets a room of it's own, and is introduced with a bit of subtitles at the bottom. Cutscenes that lead to the next room are short, and to-the-point, which is great for a puzzle level, and labeling each puzzle without interrupting the player's actions gives the level a unique form of progression. I solved the second puzzle involving the bells fairly quickly, although I have to admit, it was mostly from swinging around, as opposed to actually following the chalkboard directions. xP On the puzzle afterwards, "By the Light of Midnight," the candles weren't glued on properly, so when I randomly moved around the room, I accidentally tipped one over, getting in the way of the first switch, and I couldn't really pull it back up. So gluing them to the floor or attaching some anti-grav tweakers would be much appreciated. The puzzle itself was a great challenge, and did require patience. I greatly analyzed each switch to see which clocks it adjusted. Trying to align all the clocks to midnight was a great challenge, and the only thing I thought that took away from the experience was the fact that at random points while adjusting, many of the clocks' arrows would slowly move over clockwise without me moving. This messed with my plans a bit, but after some maneuvering, I was able to get all of them to light up. It's still a really great puzzle though, it even got me to draw everything out on a piece of paper in order to solve it! Because all the arrows were placed in random positions, I couldn't exactly plan out each attack, but by understand what switch controls what, it allowed me to maneuver my way to getting them all lit up.

Already, in puzzle 3 I could feel the great satisfaction of beating one of the puzzles. The corridors that followed were tight and nicely designed, with cool lighting that followed. The fourth puzzle, involving the broken star, was amazing. The green/red pointer was mostly responsive, although it would randomly shoot backwards and forwards a little kind of often. Shifting the pieces around were great, very cool puzzle. Moving on, it was very cool walking above the previous puzzles in this nonlinear castle, and the bookcases are a really cool idea. I jotted down simple notes with some of the books read, and I have to say, it's very cool how you've come up with these titles and fake authors, as well as the context alluding to the level's story. Even if it serves as nothing more than lore, it's still a very cool feature thrown into the level. With more rooms, comes more dark and interesting stairways, as well as the simple-yet peculiar altars.

Anyway though, this review would take up like eight pages if it was for the whole level. Essentially, I got stuck on "Where there's a window" puzzle, and I gots to go, but I'll definitely replay this. By the way, I'm not sure whether it matters or not, but I was able to drag the big purple ball out of the room, and roll it down the stairs, into the room with the red-crown altar and two bookcases.

FANtastic level, love the theme, the puzzles, pretty much everything. Hopefully some of those thoughts kindda sorta helped? Aah, oh well, you're a really talented creator, and that's what matters. xP

Thanks for the feedback Dragonvarsity and again Kalawashis you both been really helpful in guiding me as to what I could do better.

I have made a few changes, some fairly minor, like adding another reference to a TV show. There are two further cutscenes to help prevent people making too many trips through the rollers and to highlight an important little picture in the hall fo wisdom.

Finally, and quite importantly, I've rebuilt the clocks in puzzle three. Gone are the rotators and angle sensors which, lets be honest here, didn't work. In are 60 gyroscopes and some selectors. Giving away my trade secrets here! I've also changed the order the switches are wired to make it slightly, just slightly, easier.

No idea why I didn't build it like that in the first place - I used that technique in 'A Way Out Solution' which is still my favourite title, reference and mechanism by a long way.

Now, as always a hint is required in these situations, when you've made it through the trial by spikes, imagine trying to do it if you were colour blind. If you are colour blind drop me a PM and I'll give you the combination.

All righty, I got much further this time before getting stuck again. This time was in the eastern room. I lifted the rocks to access the trapdoor in the floor and there's two pedastals. I could only assume you had to use the chunks of rock in the pedestals, but there are 2 pedestals, and three chunks, and I could not figure out a combination. I ever got that circular thing with something green on it in the mix to no avail.2013-06-14 01:50:00

Good news! Beat it, and aced it. Even got the top high score.

And me at the good-ending scoreboard.

Of course now I have to go invoke that final deity. D: My inner-completionist demands it! DEMANDS.

Good luck to anyone playing. It CAN be done!

I have to admit I'd only ever planned on five deities being invoked - I wrote the opening three chapters well over a year ago, but when I'd decided on eight orbs it niggled, and niggled and niggled at me until I had to alter the ending to give a sixth, and add in the two others as bonus content. The deity who has the orange orb is the subject of the sequel by the way. Still at the drawing pictures and logic building phase mind you.

Thanks for sticking with it Kato! Hey wait a minute - that's my high score you've beaten! You mean you didn't get Trial by Spiked?! I know the answer and consistently end up with a perforated sackboy. Well played.
