When was the last time you were scared in Little Big Planet? Not just slightly creeped out. Not just spooked. When was the last time a cold breath raised the hackles on your neck, and you looked over your shoulder to make sure nothing was watching you? Close Your Eyes is Vol. 1 of my first experimental Horror project which promises tense fear unlike the usual variety you'll find in the cosmic imagisphere.

After a nasty car accident you wake up in a dark cave following a dark trail of an ill-fated team of paranormal researchers. The GEIST team have all vanished or died, and only the journals they've left behind offer any insight into the strange and dark nightmare you find yourself in.

CYE has a selectable difficulty system. Easy for those just wanting the story. Hard for those with quick wits and strong hearts.

Environments are dark and dreary with enemies you can't even see! Make use of the PARANORMAL INVESTIGATION NOISE GEAR or PING to echo-locate any wayward spirits.

Your only protection from a gruesome fate is a weapon with a five second recharge! So close your eyes, let the terror sink in, and when their whispering voices jumpstart your adrenaline... FIRE!

You're not just dealing with ghosts here. These monsters, the Lost as they are called, are much darker than that.

This is Vol. 1 of potentially a 3 part story. As such, consider this a prologue, or a calm before the storm. Collect all 12 Data boxes for prizes!

Author's Notes: As I have been mostly unimpressed by what passes for scary amongst the community at large, I've tried to make something scary that eliminates the grit and gore. Yes, there is some blood, but the level does not rely upon it for it's scary factor. If this is your first time playing, I recommend EASY mode so you can learn how the enemies behave This is MK1 of enemy AI and in future installments, I plan to make them even smarter! On hard mode, enemies will even jump behind you at time! So close your eyes, open your mind, and listen to the sound of fear.

Just a quick note. Go ahead and queue it up if you'd like, but tonight I'm going to switch things around just a tad to include a difficulty selector available on the the Title Screen. The level as-is works just fine, and is considered NORMAL DIFFICULTY. I'm going to include EASY which only spawns harmless monsters, and HARD which only spawns dangerous ones. This way I won't have to alienate people with terrible reflexes, and I can also cater to those with GOOD reflexes. XD

EDIT: Difficulty Selector has been added. Easy mode is just sad. Hard mode is insane. I heartily recommend Normal.

Played this on Hard mode, got to the checkpoint where the log talks about sabotage, right after running down a ramp. I ran out of lives twice, and gave up, switching to easy. I could not figure out how the ghosts were acting, and so I could not shoot them down accurately =/ Perhaps the sensor range is a little too small? Several times it felt like I should have shot a ghost, and then it would turn out that the ghost was in fact right behind me and I would die.

Otherwise, the sound mechanic was very cool. It made the level tense, as you heard the ghosts closing in on you, and the atmosphere was nice. Some of the stickers were hard to read (particularly while running from ghosts!), but those weren't really a major part of the story

I did run into a few areas you shouldn't be able to bypass:

-At any checkpoint with the boxes on the left you could corner jump from the boxes to the top of the checkpoint. I was only really able to get behind the level at the first checkpoint, but you may want to watch this in other parts
-Similarly, you can jump up behind the doors, and bypass them. This is largely unimportant, but you can skip the shooting gallery by doing this, and if you go left after watching the cutscene you are locked out and have to restart.

Overall, I enjoyed the level, be sure to let me know when your sequel is released

On Hard mode the Lost will actually teleport behind you. XD (Hence hard mode.) The teleporters are different because they should make a Heartbeating noise as they approach. I'll double check that though, since even basic Spookums that teleport should heartbeat, and I don't think they are.

On any difficulty the Lost will never touch you until they are right up on you. I believe the "spawn death kill" is set to 5.0 and their range of BEING killed is 35.0, and they have a movement speed of 1. There is a data box that tells you exactly how to kill a Lost but it is slightly more hidden than the rest. I'll move it to a more obvious location, and check out these bypasses you found. Thanks for the feedback!

I actually found all the boxes, forgot to mention that I didn't get that they were teleporting though, that makes more sense. I may try this again tomorrow, and aim the opposite way at that point 2013-06-14 03:49:00

Okay, I just checked, and they are NOT making the right noise. D: Which is bad. I mean, the main gimmick in the level, and the whole reason it's even CALLED Close Your Eyes is because you're actually supposed to rely on your sense of hearing. And if the enemies aren't sounding off properly, then it's no good! No good at all.

So here's what I'm doing:
1. I see what you mean about the barriers. Blasted gaps! I got that fixed. You can still hop on top of the occasional checkpoint, but I've barricaded the backgrounds, and sealed off the doors.
2. I'm changing one of the Data boxes, and putting it right fat in the middle of your path before the first enemies. The text will be changed from talking about The Beast to explaining enemy mechanics. The Beast box is getting moved closer to where the Beast actually appears, with a different wall message.
3. I'm giving all teleporters back their heartbeats. XD This will also be explained in that fat data box right in the way.

The worst enemies for me are the ones that come from above. I have them positioned so right as you're creeping up on an enemy, BAM! One comes flying in from up top. XD Luckily there's only 3 of these, and one is always harmless. Always.

EDIT: Edits have been made. Thank you so much for playing and reviewing my level! : D

I second avundcv
This was a terrific, atmospheric game.
The writing on the menu and walls were awesome.

I can't take credit for the writing. XD Fonts are from the Fonts Temple.

Sounds like it's at least in the ballpark of scary. Heading that direction anyway. If I do ever decide to make a part 2, there will be fewer lit areas, more fog, more false alarms, and just more room in general. I wanted to include a lot more in Vol. 1, but that elevator shaft alone at the end takes up a full 1/4 of the complexity meter, and I have no idea why. And that's without any enemies.

Anyway, it's somewhat experimental, since I really didn't know if a level could hold any weight done in this format. Obviously, there's no platforming or bouncing or fun stuff because that would make it difficult to track enemies, plus I'm operating under the assumption that the NPCs in the logs are humans and not sack-folk. I do promise there will never be any NPC sackbots in anything CYE related. In fact the only living NPC you ever come across in Vol. 1 is Leon, but- hmmm. I'll stop there.

There's about 3 written pages of backstory I have for CYE. Everything from character names, histories, eventual fates, who survives, who dies, and lots of info about a Creature Bestiary. There's about 40 or so different creatures I've got written down, and only 4 make an appearance in Vol. 1

Played this today. I must say that despite your efforts, this wasn't scary. The music was more quiet and bouncy than unnerving. The writing on the wall didn't help; I expected you to put something like "Soylent Green is people!" on the walls, and you did.

I guess your style is just too silly to be scary.

Thank you for your honesty. As it stands this is looking like a standalone project. If this fails to be scary then any others won't be either. I'll go back to the drawing board and in the future try again. ^_^ Again thanks for your honest opinion!

EDIT: In light of this, I have made a few adjustments to the ambience, and removed the music for the bulk of the level. (It's still there at the beginning and end.) and I added a few more ambient effects.

Eh.... I don't know. I still want to go back to the drawing board. Maybe make it more explorative and less linear, and do a lot of other things. I'm highly critical of my work. XD Anyway. Tis' an experimental project. I experimented. I know what went wrong, and what went right. That will help in the future. But thanks. XD And again thanks for your review earlier.2013-06-27 13:40:00
