Vharley- The RPG Project Thread

Archive: 22 posts

http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/qq262/Code1337777/vharleylogo.png

Vharley is an RPG I am working on in RPG Maker XP. It is my dream game, the game I have been thinking up since seventh grade... so... I guess 3 or 4 years now.

Anyway, this thread is dedicated to letting people know I'm making this, and giving updates, and what not. I will also be accepting help from people.

So, anyway... The gameplay won't be to different then a normal RPG Maker RPG, i.e. you fight enemies a'la Earthbound or the original Dragon Warrior- You view portaits of your characters against pictures of enemies, and it's turn based.

The Story is thus, and is why I've been dreaming this up for years:

Jack Vharley is a farm boy who lives with his grandfather on a farm. One day, while he is at town, he returns to find his farm burned and his grandfather dead.

... Sound cliche, eh? However, it gets MUCH less cliched and, in my opinion, awesome. However, to tell you too much is a HUGE spoiler, which I doubt you guys want.

Jack returns to town to become a blacksmith apprentice. Soon, however, the blacksmith convinces Jack that the Kingdom has plotted against his grandfather due to his grandfather being the son of a rebellious noble. Jack trusts the Blacksmith, and so, in his fury, does what the Blacksmith says... and kills the mayor. After realizing what he's done, Jack is enveloped by guilt, and kills the Blacksmith out of his own fury at what he has now become. He is chased out of town as a murderer, and is left to join a shadowy organization known only as the "Agency", and becomes enveloped in a struggle aginst two sides, as the Agenecy searches for it's "Utopia".

... Some people may remember this idea from a post I wrote months ago... If so, don't spoil it, because if you do... I'LL KILL YOU!

And don't bother searching for it now, because I deletd it to prevent any one from spoiling this .

Anyway... at the moment, I shall show you a screenshot, of the current menu screen:

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/5109/vharleymenudw6.th.png (http://img405.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vharleymenudw6.png)

This Menu screen was made by Code (except for the menu box, of course). Please, feel free to tell us what you feel about it.

And then, there lies the matter of "help"... I would appreciate if anyone skilled in the following areas could help:

1. RPG Maker in general
2. Story development
3. Spriting/ Drawing
4. Midi Music Creation

There are three songs I want to be made for this particulary, but I can always find another way around it, so that's no biggie.

As for Spriting/Drawing, I would like Battlebacks (still pictures to view the area round what's happening, aka the picture Code put together) and battlers (still pictures of people and monsters battling) to be made. If anyone does this, I'll be sure to credit them and maybe buy them a sticker or bundle too. Be forewarned, though- by doing so, I trust you to be careful with my spoilers I'll give you, in case you care about that.

Anyway, to get to what this thread is really about: boosting interest. I just want to know if anyone out there cares about this at all, and so... I shall close this by asking who here is interested in this?

Oh, and two final notes:

1. I only started making this yesterday, so isn't too far along.
2. If, as I hope, and this is ever completed- it will only be able to run on Windows, so you'd only be able to play it on a PC or a computer with Windows installed if you would want to play it. It will, of course, be free, if it ever comes out, which I hope it does .

Sounds very cool. Right now I have no time to help unfortunately but I wish you the best of luck!

Could you give me a link to the RPG maker. I'm curious.

Not "sprites" per say- any type of picture can be imported into battler images, so if you can draw enemies if I need them, that would be good .

Also, I don't really know the basics of sprite making, but almost all sprites have to be made in a certain format...

Oh! There's only two sprites I NEED to get changed which I can't tell for spoilerish reasons, but I have Code working on that, so hopefully he can do them right. If not, I may need some help on that.

Sprites need to be saved in png or gif to retain quality.

I cant draw. :/

Here comes the ultimate pessimist, the predicter of dooms....Chaz'OSkulls!

I'm calling this now, this will never be finished. I've seen it time and time again where people start up epic RPG Maker projects only to have them end abruptly for varying reasons. It's tragic.

*cough*

Good luck anyway, oh and...

And then, there lies the matter of "help"... I would appreciate if anyone skilled in the following areas could help:

1. RPG Maker in general
2. Story development
3. Spriting/ Drawing
4. Midi Music Creation <--- You want me for this, srs.

I'm skilled in all of those (story development less so) and no I'm not joking or bragging. Okay, I'm bragging a little, but that doesn't change the fact that I'm offering my services for free because you're a bruh. If I see some proper progress and you stick with it, I'll help out for sure. Especially with the music considering every thursday in one of my classes when I've finished my work I have just been making all kinds of video game tunes.

EDIT: Also, if you have a pirated version of RPG Maker, stop right now. It will bite you in the posterier later otherwise, trust me.

I must admit that the chances of me actually finishing this is quite low =_=. I made this thread kinda to get people to encourage me :/.

Anyway, I don't need any drawing right now... I just kinda need, ya know, it later on, hopefully... Maybe.

I can pixel sprites, on paint or Photoshop Elements 5. I have RPG maker 2003 by searching google and got a free download, but RPG maker XP costs. I am useless at it though.

So basically, I could help with sprites, if need be. Don't expect me to make many though, just a couple of characters. I would say though, you should make the game up to the point of killing the mayor, and end it. Polish it real good, then continue to the next segment. The last thing you want is to have put the work in for it, then realise you cannot finish it.

Also, you should read up on pixeling yourself! if I can, you can! Just google pixeling tutorials, for AAing, linework etc.

Cheers! hope to hear from you!

Here's a tip, which I'd imagine you might be doing anyway. Use the character models that you get packed in with RPG Maker and just find ones closest to your characters as possible then you can swap them out later with ease when you have custom sprites.

That's what I'm doing. Only two characters that NEED to be changed for story reasons, and I'll see what code does with them...
