Video Game Idea of Sorts

Archive: 3 posts

Alrighty. So, I had to write up a thing for something. An idea for a video game to sell as a matter of fact. Me and one of my friends have been bouncing ideas back and forth for a little bit around the end of 2012. This is pretty much what we came up with. (not all details are stated to prevent spoiling if we do end up making this a game in the future since we are both aspiring video game creators/designers) If there are things that you want explained to you, I can probably provide an answer because, again, not all the details are here. The story line is pretty much all done. Alrighty, let's get to it:

You start off the game playing as a little girl, it starts with a cutscene of her drawing on her floor. There's all these drawings she made all around her, most of them have her in it, but some include another figure in some of them. Where the figure appears, it's isn't in any recent drawings. Her parents order her to go to bed and so she does. The scene fades into an unknown area. It feels familiar to the girl, but she can't figure out why. The scene is rather crude, and looks like it was drawn by a 9 year old. You've seen it before too. It was the picture that she was drawing earlier. You are able to move at this point and wonder around the scene. You can start moving from picture to picture that she had drawn. Then, obstacles come up such as a locked gate where you have to hide the key where it's somewhere in the scene, or cross over water without falling in, you'll respawn if you do.
That's the tutorial.
You get to another chapter. These scenes are of when she went camping with her family. She continues to walk around. She's already convinced that this is a dream so she doesn't know of enemies. You come across a wolf. She doesn't remember drawing it, and it actually looks more well drawn than the rest of the scene. She thinks nothing could hurt her but then the wolf takes a hit at her. She gets injured. You then have to run and hide from the wolf. There's a sanity bar. As your fear increases, the images in the scene start to grow grotesque and warp into a nightmare due to a child's imagination. Once you evade the wolf, your sanity goes back to normal after some time. You continue on. You have to hide from more enemies and keep on going. You come across the scene of their campsite and you find these toys, bandages, and pieces of candy. The pieces of candy replenish health and a little bit of sanity. The toys replenish sanity but you have to sit there for a little bit, so it isn't good for when it comes to having to evade enemies. Bandages will heal you but you have to take a second to apply them.
You come to a new area after a while and you notice that the scene starts to get better in how it is drawn. It starts to become something that you haven't drawn before and the creatures become even more well drawn. The creatures slowly become more dangerous. You eventually find a weapon of sorts that you can use to somewhat fight back or influence the surroundings around you to hurt the monsters.
After a few more areas of more monster evasions and puzzle solving, you get to a boss level. The boss is the person who is drawing all the monsters and creating them. She starts to draw some up on the spot where you gotta defeat them and then as the boss is trying to draw more up (notice it takes time to draw them up) you will try to hit her and weaken her. The game ends once you defeat her and some cutscenes after appear and whatever.

Any questions? Ask me if there is any d:

I like this idea, it sounds really interesting.
Having a sanity bar while in her dream and having to hide from enemies is well worth looking into I think. Sort of like a stealth survival horror game in some parts, something I believe a lot of people would be very keen to experience. And then trying to take control of the dream as you get further through the game.. excellent. Great stuff, nice work.

(Friend she was talking about)
One of the enemies we were working on is a specter called a Shadow. Unlike other drawings, the Shadow has the special ability to disguise its self as the player's shadow (The only way to detect them is if you see your shadow has eyes) They will only attack if you shine your flashlight on them, for they are vulnerable to light. The only way to free yourself from the Shadow is to shine light on it (However, the Shadow will try to escape to nearby dark areas, making it impossible to go after them)
It's nice to hear that you like our idea!
