The PS3s fan

Archive: 14 posts

Before i bought my ps3 i read that it didn't sound almost at all. when it finally arrived in my home i was positively surprised, it sounded even lesser than i had thought it would!
But some months later the fan sometimes when you had played for an hour or two went into some sort of overdrive and started to sound like a lawn mover. Back then i thought it was because it was in the middle of the summer it stood cramped between a wii and some other things so it tended to get pretty hot in there. Then i moved it so that it stood more openly and the problem vanished.
But after a short time it started to sound like that again and i can't stop it, now i only need to play for half an hour until i need to increase the volume on my tv to hear almost anything !
I'm starting to get pretty irritated now and i was wondering if any of you have encountered this problem and if you maybe even know some kind of solution other than turning it in to reparation and to be LBP free for a couple of weeks ( a horrendous thought :kz.

Turn it off, unplug it, and use a vacuum, preferably a high powered one to suck out the dust from the vents. I do this once a month and it keeps it pretty quiet even a year later.2009-01-25 21:23:00

It'll not stay quiet just because you use a vacuum cleaner on it. If the workload is heavy like GTA4 as an example it'll fire up into boeing 747 mode. My 60gb was loud as h. My 80g is also quite loud when it's really powering up but not as loud as my previous one. I pretty much always use headphones so it's never a problem for me. If that's not enough you should hear the strange metallic noises coming from my 80g once in a while. Consider yourselves lucky. I'm not bothered by this either but it's not normal, that's for sure.2009-01-25 22:09:00

Not true. The reason why it gets consistently louder is because of dust build up along with pet hair and such. The dust makes the system run hotter, and more intense action sequences will make it run even hotter, making the fan run more and louder.

I've vacuumed it out numerous times, and it still stays almost whisper quiet. Standing it up for a bit also helps as heat rises.

Mine sometimes increases in volume, but that's when the temperature is over 40C as it has been the past few days. I just don't use it all that much when we are in a heatwave. I don't really want it to melt, it's a 60gb with backwards compatability.

When I hear it change pitch, I just give it a rest for a bit. It's just more likely to happen during hot days.

Thanks for the help! I will try the vacuum cleaner right away!

Don't the external fans come with a lot of other problems, like sounding very high themselves, at least i've heard it from multiple places but i don't really know whats the problem with them... I should probably do more research on that.

Thanks for that, seriously.

I've known that it was dust making the PS3 heat up, but I never thought the solution would be so simple. >_>
I always thought that I would have to take the thing apart and blow the dust out using an air can...

Anyway, worked perfectly for me.

The PS3 fans have 4 different speeds. Depending the temperature the thermo reaches, the fan changes its speed.

You shouldn't worry unless your fan is oddly in the higher speed levels without apparent reasons. Also, if the fan goes at max I suggest you quit playing ASAP and the whole thing cool down.

It goes to max after about twenty minutes...

I did hit full speed once by playing LBP. Wich model do you have? I own the 60gig.
The full speed shouldn't happen really. This means there are other reasons. Is your place possibly too humid? Is the PS3 on a clean surface and not too high on the shelves? Is there smoke in your place? Is there enough space around the PS3? You really should have AT LEAST the space to put your fist besides the PS3 vents.

Oh and full speed is really loud by the way. I'm hitting the third speed at some point (loud already imo) playing but the fourth level happened only once for me.

Another thing I do for limiting dust is to cover my PS3 with a clothe when it's off.

After reading this I feel pretty lucky. My 60 GB is going on 2 years old, has never been cleaned (house with 4 pets), and yet I never hear the fan running unless I put my head down near it. But where I live in WA state may have something to do with it, since it rarely gets very hot here. Nice climate!2009-01-26 23:58:00

I own the 40 gig version.
It stands in a small shelf under the tv, it has alot of space behind it and a little more than a fist to the right (where most of the vents are). It's not humid and nobody has probably ever smoked in the room.
Thankfully it helped to clean it so now i can enjoy lbp without hearing mode 4 Boeing fly bus fan sound
